Описание:
A must-read book for understanding this vibrant and influential modern Jewish movement
Hasidism originated in southeastern Poland, in mystical circles centered on the figure of Israel Ba'al Shem Tov, but it was only after his death in 1760 that a movement began to spread. Today, Hasidism is witnessing a remarkable renaissance around the world. This book provides the first comprehensive history of the pietistic movement that shaped modern Judaism. Written by an international team of scholars, its unique blend of intellectual, religious, and social history demonstrates that, far from being a throwback to the Middle Ages, Hasidism is a product of modernity that forged its identity as a radical alternative to the secular world.
This prescient and timely book documents Noam Chomsky's visit to Lebanon, in May 2006, to lecture on U.S. imperialism and the imminent crises facing the Middle East--two months before Israel orchestrated major military campaigns against Lebanon and Palestine. During his visit, he met with political leaders--including those of Hizbullah--toured refugee camps, and inspected a former Israeli prison and torture compound. Inside Lebanon describes Chomsky's journey and situates it within the tragically altered context of Lebanon and Palestine before and after the war of 2006. Chomsky's essays provide a framework for understanding the role of U.S. politics, power, and policies in these conflicts by examining how the United States wages war and imposes world domination while presenting itself as the righteous protector of democracy. Ironically, U.S. efforts at imperial control generate conflict and crises within the region while undermining democracy. Inside Lebanon includes essays and photographs by Carol Chomsky, Irene L. Gendizier, Assaf Kfoury, Jennifer Loewenstein, Hanady Salman, Rasha Salti, and Fawwaz Traboulsi and provides an analysis of the social-political conditions of people in Lebanon, Gaza, and refugee camps. It situates Israeli's attacks and the position of Hizbullah and Hamas in this conflict while at the same time providing a record of events during the war, linking the conflicts on the ground to the global order.

Описание: Mordantly funny and deeply moving, this award-winning novel about life in a West Bank settlement has been hailed as brilliant ("The New York Times Book Review") and The Great Israeli Novel in which] Gavron stakes his claim to be Israel s Jonathan Franzen ("Tablet"). On a rocky hilltop stands Ma aleh Hermesh C, a fledgling outpost of Jewish settlers in the West Bank. According to government records it doesn t exist; according to the military it must be defended. On this contested land, Othniel Assis under the wary gaze of the Palestinians in the neighboring village lives on his farm with his ever-expanding family. As Othniel cheerfully manipulates government agencies, more settlers arrive, and a hodge-podge of shipping containers and mobile homes takes root. One steadfast resident is Gabi Kupper, a former kibbutz dweller who savors the delicate routines of life on the settlement. When Gabi s prodigal brother, Roni, arrives penniless on his doorstep with a bizarre plan to sell the artisanal olive oil from the Palestinian village to Tel Aviv yuppies, Gabi worries his life won t stay quiet for long. Then a nosy American journalist stumbles into Ma aleh Hermesh C, and Gabi s worst fears are confirmed. The settlement becomes the focus of an international diplomatic scandal, facing its greatest threat yet. This indispensable novel ("The Wall Street Journal") skewers the complex, often absurd reality of life in Israel. Grappling with one of the most charged geo-political issues of our time, Gavron s story gains a foothold in our hearts and minds and stubbornly refuses to leave ("Kirkus Reviews," starred review)."

Описание: Tel Kabri, located in the western Galilee region of modern Israel several kilometers inland from modern Acco and Nahariyya, was the center of a Canaanite polity during the Middle Bronze Age (MB). Initial excavations conducted at the site from 1986 to 1993 revealed the remains of a palace dating primarily to the Middle Bronze Age II period, during the first half of the second millennium BCE. Excavations were resumed at the site in 2005 under the co-direction of the present editors, Assaf Yasur-Landau and Eric H. Cline. This volume presents the results of the work done at Tel Kabri from 2005 to 2011.
