Описание: We often learn our most important lessons when we are challenged by something that removes us from our comfort zone. Sometimes we, as adults, find ourselves open to growth while struggling with events that are happening directly to us, but growth can also occur while viewing challenges through the eyes of others. All of us have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in unique yet similar ways. As difficult as it has been for adults, children have been impacted as well, viewing the pandemic through a different lens. They have been forced to accept a new reality, both in and out of school. However, it can also open a door to growth in ways we did not anticipate. Seeing the ways their peers cope with changes in their own lives can provide new and eye-opening insights on how to meet their own challenges. This insight may enable them to develop a sense of empathy and kindness. This is a heart-warming tale about a little boy with a big heart who learns some important life lessons. Against the backdrop of the Covid-19 pandemic, he comes to see that not everyone is as fortunate as him and his family. He also learns the lesson that in giving, we also receive...and that giving, when you have, or when you make, the opportunity, often gives us a feeling of warmth and home.

Описание: Author Michael Chabon described Ben Katchor (b. 1951) as “the creator of the last great American comic strip.” Katchor's comic strip Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer, which began in 1988, brought him to the attention of the readers of alternative weekly newspapers along with a coterie of artists who have gone on to public acclaim. In the mid-1990s, NPR ran audio versions of several Julius Knipl stories, narrated by Katchor and starring Jerry Stiller in the title role.An early contributor to RAW, Katchor also contributed to Forward, the New Yorker, Slate, and weekly newspapers. He edited and published two issues of Picture Story, which featured his own work, with articles and stories by Peter Blegvad, Jerry Moriarty, and Mark Beyer. In addition to being a dramatist, Katchor has been the subject of profiles in the New Yorker, a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius Grant” and a Guggenheim Fellowship, and a fellow at both the American Academy in Berlin and the New York Public Library.Katchor's work is often described as zany or bizarre, and author Douglas Wolk has characterized his work as “one or two notches too far” beyond an absurdist reality. And yet the work resonates with its audience because, as was the case with Knipl's journey through the wilderness of a decaying city, absurdity was only what was usefully available; absurdity was the reality. Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer presaged the themes of Katchor's work: a concern with the past, an interest in the intersection of Jewish identity and a secular commercial culture, and the limits and possibilities of urban life.

Описание: In this in-depth analysis, Peter Muir argues that Gordon Matta-Clark’s Conical Intersect (1975) is emblematic of Henri Lefebvre’s understanding of art’s function in relation to urban space. By engaging with Lefebvre’s theory in conjunction with the perspectives of other writers, such as Michel de Certeau, Jacques Derrida, and George Bataille, the book elicits a story that presents the artwork’s significance, origins and legacies. Conical Intersect is a multi-media artwork, which involves the intersections of architecture, sculpture, film, and photography, as well as being a three-dimensional model that reflects aspects of urban, art, and architectural theory, along with a number of cultural and historiographic discourses which are still present and active. This book navigates these many complex narratives by using the central ’hole’ of Conical Intersect as its focal point: this apparently vacuous circle around which the events, documents, and other historical or theoretical references surrounding Matta-Clark’s project, are perpetually in circulation. Thus, Conical Intersect is imagined as an insatiable absence around which discourses continually form, dissipate and resolve. Muir argues that Conical Intersect is much more than an ’artistic hole.’ Due to its location at Plateau Beaubourg in Paris, it is simultaneously an object of art and an instrument of social critique.
