Описание: This background study for the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2019 shows how income inequality and GDP per capita, analysed both alone and together, determine the probability of individual food insecurity in low- and middle-income countries. Results show that increases in the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita are concurrent with declines in individual food insecurity.

The study uses the 2014 Gallup World Poll (GWP) dataset on a sample of 75 low- and middle-income countries to collect individual and household socio-economic information, and merges it with two country-level characteristics: GDP per capita and the Gini index of income inequality. The result is a unique dataset containing information at different levels of disaggregation that comprise individual, household and country-level variables. The GWP dataset of individual food insecurity is based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and employs a three-level linear probability model to assess the macro-economic effects of economic growth and income inequality on individual food insecurity.

The results show that individuals living in countries with a high Gini index have on average a 33 percentage point higher probability of experiencing severe food insecurity and a 42 percentage point higher probability of moderate or severe food insecurity. Importantly, the results also indicate that high income inequality works to undercut the contribution of per capita GDP in reducing individual food insecurity, both in terms of severe and moderate or severe food insecurity. The findings suggest that by tackling income inequality, economic growth can become a force for reducing food insecurity, especially in low- and middle-income countries

Описание:

This book presents a study of perceptions of food insecurity in East Asia, and explores how individual countries are developing strategies to deal with the situation. It also looks at how the perception of food insecurity has increasingly influenced the nature of international interactions, not just within East Asia, but also in the region's relations with major external actors.

Many of the challenges facing East Asia are generic food security issues that face people and governments across the world - for example, the implications of climate change and demographic changes on food supplies. This book places the East Asian context in the wider discussion of food (in)security in global politics. However, it also identifies potential regional 'differences' - for example, the significance of rice for the region, and the unavoidable impact of China as a major regional player. What the Chinese state, and Chinese companies, decide to do in response to concerns about food insecurity have an impact not just on the rest of the region, but on the rest of the world.

Taking too much of a Sinocentric focus, however, ignores other actors in East Asia, or merely relegates discussion to how they respond to Chinese policies or external strategies. This book considers the region as a whole, both when it comes to thinking about food security challenges and responses within the region itself, and also in the outward projection of regional food insecurity on the rest of the world.

This book was published as a special issue of The Pacific Review.

Описание: Water has always been a source of risks and opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa. Yet rapidly changing socioeconomic, political, and environmental conditions make water security a different, and more urgent, challenge than ever before. This report shows that water security is about much more than just coping with water scarcity. It entails ensuring the delivery of affordable and high quality water to citizens in order to reinforce relationships between service providers and customers and contribute to a renewed social contract. It involves managing the impacts of migration on water supplies to ensure -- against a backdrop of historic levels of displacement -- that both host and refugee communities enjoy equitable and reliable access without degrading water resources. As the report describes, water security is an urgent target, but also a target within reach. A host of potential solutions to the region's water management challenges exist. To make these solutions work, clear incentives are needed to change the way water is managed, conserved, and allocated. Countries in the region also will need to engage civil society and youth as well as promote social inclusion.
