Описание:

The Enchanted April is a pure wish-fulfillment story but theres an acid edge to it ... hints of feminist revolt beneath the sparkly surface. - Los Angeles Times

A genuine feeling for color and for beauty. - The New York Times

An immediate bestseller upon its first publication The Enchanted April set off a craze for tourism to the Italian Riviera that continues today. A charming, slyly comic feminist novel of longing and transformation.

The women at the center of The Enchanted April are alike only in their dissatisfaction with their everyday lives. They find each other - and the castle of their dreams - through a classified ad in a London newspaper one rainy February afternoon. The ladies expect a pleasant holiday, but they dont anticipate that the month they spend in Portofino will reintroduce them to their true natures and reacquaint them with joy. Now, if the same transformation can be worked on their husbands and lovers, the enchantment will be complete.

A particular kind of witty and well-constructed fiction, a sort of sparkling Euclid, which nobody else can touch. - Rebecca West

Elizabeth von Arnims prose is textured with a dry and sometimes even acerbic wit, and her principle theme is a satirical questioning of the social order, underscored by her feminist tendencies and a skeptical view of the institution of marriage. - The New York Public Library

A comedy of miscommunication ... a sun-washed fairytale, delicious in its contrivance - The Guardian

About the author

Elizabeth von Arnim was born on 31 August 1866 in Australia. She was cousin to the writer Katherine Mansfield. In 1890 she married her first husband, Count Henning August von Arnim-Schlagenthin, a Prussian aristocrat, with whom she had five children. Elizabeth and her German Garden, published anonymously in 1898, was a barely fictionalised account of Elizabeths life and the creation of her garden at the family home of Nassenheide in Pomerania, where Hugh Walpole and E. M. Forster were tutors to her children. Its instant success was followed by many more novels, including Vera (1921) and The Enchanted April (1922), and another almost-autobiography, All the Dogs of My Life (1936). She separated from Count von Arnim in 1908, and after his death two years later she built a house in Switzerland, marrying John Francis Stanley Russell in 1916. This marriage also ended in separation in 1919 when Elizabeth moved to America, where she died on 9 February 1941, aged 74.

Описание: Meet Elizabeth and discover there is no greater happiness to be found than when lost in a wilderness of a garden, with bird cherries, lilacs, hollyhocks and lilies crowding the vision. Описание:

Elizabeth von Arnim (31 August 1866 - 9 February 1941), born Mary Annette Beauchamp, was an Australian born British novelist. By marriage she became Gr fin (Countess) von Arnim-Schlagenthin, and by a second marriage, Countess Russell. Although known in her early life as May, "after the publication of her first book, she was known to her readers, eventually to her friends, and finally even to her family as Elizabeth." and she is now invariably referred to as Elizabeth von Arnim. She also wrote under the pen name Alice Cholmondeley.

She was born in Kirribilli Point (today part of Sydney), Australia. When she was three years old the family returned to England where she was raised. Her parents were Henry Herron Beauchamp (1825-1907), merchant, and her mother Elizabeth (Louey) Weiss Lassetter (1836-1919). Arnim had four brothers, a sister and an adopted cousin from New Zealand, Kathleen Beauchamp, who later married John Middleton Murray and wrote under the pen name Katherine Mansfield.

In 1898 she started her literary career by publishing Elizabeth and Her German Garden, a semi-autobiographical novel about a rural idyll published anonymously and, as it turned out to be highly successful, reprinted 20 times within the first year. Von Arnim wrote another 20 books, which were all published "By the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden".

The Enchanted April is a 1922 novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. It was made into an RKO Radio movie in 1935, and a second adaptation, directed by Mike Newell, was released in 1992. The 1992 release received several Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. A Tony Award-nominated stage play by Matthew Barber, also adapted from the novel, was presented on Broadway in 2003.

Elizabeth von Arnim's novel tells the story of four dissimilar women in 1920s England who leave their damp and rainy environs to go on a holiday to a secluded coastal castle in Italy. Mrs Arbuthnot and Mrs Wilkins, who belong to the same ladies' club but have never spoken, become acquainted after reading an advertisement for villas for rent in a newspaper. They find some common ground in that both are struggling to make the best of unhappy marriages. Having decided to seek other ladies to help share expenses, they reluctantly take on the waspish, elderly Mrs Fisher and the stunning, but aloof, Lady Caroline Dester. The four women come together at the castle and find rejuvenation in the tranquil beauty of their surroundings, rediscovering hope and love. (wikipedia.org)

Explores the literary connection between Katherine Mansfield and Elizabeth von Arnim

Elizabeth von Arnim is best remembered as the author of Elizabeth and Her German Garden (1898) and The Enchanted April (1922), as well as being the elder cousin of Katherine Mansfield. Recently, new research into the complex relationship between these writers has extended our understanding of the familial, personal and literary connections between these unlikely friends. We know that they were an influential presence on one another and reviewed each other's work.

By bringing the work of Mansfield and von Arnim together - including on matters of artistry, on mourning, on gardens, on female resistance - this book establishes shared preoccupations in ways that refine and extend our knowledge of writing in the period. It also deepens our understanding of the historical and literary contexts within which both of these extraordinary authors worked.
