Описание: Oxford Archaeology undertook a series of excavations in 2015–16 at Graven Hill on the former site of MoD Bicester, a large military storage and distribution centre built during the Second World War. The archaeological works revealed evidence of prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval activity, as well as finds relating to the use of the military site during the 1940s and 1950s. Ephemeral signs of early prehistoric activity were limited to stone tools, including an impressive Neolithic axe head, and a Bronze Age cremation burial. The first sign of occupation dated to the middle Iron Age in the form of a small settlement on the northern slope of the hill. A late Iron Age settlement to the north-west appeared to have been abandoned shortly after the Roman invasion, perhaps as a direct consequence of the arrival of the army at Alchester, 1.6km west of Graven Hill. This coincided with the construction of Akeman Street, the alignment of which was discovered to circumnavigate the north side of the hill. The town of Bicester later originated in the 6th century AD, around the time that a collection of dress and personal items were buried to the north of Graven Hill. A new farmstead was established in the late 11th century, developing in the 13th century with a series of masonry buildings arranged around a central courtyard, linked via a road to the deserted medieval village at Wretchwick. The site is significant for its well-preserved structural foundations and a considerable number of artefacts, including one of the largest medieval pottery assemblages known from rural Oxfordshire. The farmstead was abandoned about the same time as the village in the mid-14th century, perhaps as a result of the Black Death. The land was subsequently used for agriculture until the development of MoD Bicester in the 1940s. Together, the archaeological findings presented in this monograph have enriched our understanding of the history of the Oxfordshire landscape.

The revelatory saga of Pixar's rocky start and improbable success
After Steve Jobs was dismissed from Apple in the early 1990s, he turned his attention to a little-known graphics company he owned called Pixar. One day, out of the blue, Jobs called Lawrence Levy, a Harvard-trained lawyer and executive to whom he had never spoken before. He hoped to persuade Levy to help him pull Pixar back from the brink of failure.
This is the extraordinary story of what happened next: how Jobs and Levy concocted and pulled off a highly improbable plan that transformed Pixar into one of Hollywood's greatest success stories. Levy offers a masterful, firsthand account of how Pixar rose from humble beginnings, what it was like to work so closely with Jobs, and how Pixar's story offers profound lessons that can apply to many aspects of our lives.
"Part business book and part thriller--a tale that's every bit as compelling as the ones Pixar tells in its blockbuster movies. It's also incredibly inspirational, a story about a team that took big risks and reaped the rewards . . . I loved this book and could not put it down."--Dan Lyons, best-selling author of Disrupted
"A natural storyteller, Levy offers an inside look at the business and a fresh, sympathetic view of Jobs."--Success Magazine

Poetry. Do you dare dive into the pool of someone's time on earth, bright moments and dark humors treated with equal care? Are you ready for poems that cannily align 'shrimp, sandwiches, beer by the pitcher, the meaning of life' with a confident hand? The maximalist panache of MATING CALLS OF THE DEAD takes on forbidden subjects and pulls no punches. Steve Kistulentz's lineation, formal acuity, and soundplay give even the heaviest experiences a light touch on the page. 'And I am waiting for the love parade, / for the 11 o'clock news to tell me who's won, / who's lost: ' aren't we all? We have all been waiting for this terrific collection. --Sandra Beasley
'I keep reminding myself // history is a list of lovers or fractures, / and most of mine are now healed, ' Steve Kistulentz tells us in 'It Is All Falling Indelibly Into the Past, ' the opening poem of MATING CALLS OF THE DEAD. This collection beckons us to visit those ghost figures and ruptures, pulling out a bar stool and unraveling memory in masterful, heartbreaking detail. Kistulentz journeys to a family' s past, whether a 'moment / captured in Ektachrome' or conversation overheard and still recalled, and into a present where mortality looms and desire surfaces like a verse of a long-forgotten hymn. MATING CALL OF THE DEAD charms, rivets, and devastates. Take this book to bed with you. --Mary Biddinger
At their strongest, the poems in MATING CALLS OF THE DEAD are among the best recent poems of the American South. Steve Kistulentz's voice is always clear, direct, and forceful, and though Kistulentz plunges into the depths, he never loses his sense of where he is, nor, most importantly, his sense of where his reader is. MATING CALLS OF THE DEAD is a remarkable collection. --Shane McCrae
There are 171,476 words in the English language, and at least 170,000 ways to avoid the truth. But luckily the poet Steve Kistulentz and MATING CALLS OF THE DEAD have appeared at last, connecting us, and the dots. These dandy, searing, searching poems provide the news we need, how death doesn't care but we do, and how 'no iron can stab / the heart like a poem written for a near-stranger.' --Alan Michael Parker
