Описание:
The life story of the Chinese diplomat and educational pioneer who bridged the gap between east and western cultures to affect social and political change. Yung Wing's influence is felt throughout modern history and remains a crucial part of U.S. and Chinese relations.
The first edition of My Life in China and America was published in 1909. Initially written in English, Yung Wing explores his humble beginnings in a small village in his native country. He discusses the move from China to America where he received a formal education. This would lead to his history-making stint at Yale University, where he became the first Chinese person to graduate from an American institution. His professional career is full of notable feats including trailblazing business deals between the U.S. and China. Wing also spearheaded the Chinese Educational Mission, which sent more than 100 students to America to study science and engineering.
My Life in China and America brings Yung Wing's incredible story to the masses. It's a real-life tale of tragedy and triumph that speaks to the resilience of the human spirit. It's a critical piece of Chinese and American history that should be taught and valued.
With an eye-catching new cover, and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of My Life in China and America is both modern and readable.

Yung Suk Kim takes up the language ofbody that infuses 1 Corinthians, Paul'smost complicated letter, and the letterthat provides us the most information, and poses the sharpest questions, aboutsocial realities in the early church.Kim argues against the view that inspeaking of the church as Christ'sbody Paul seeks to emphasize unityand the social boundary. Against theconventional rhetoric of the bodypolitic in Greco-Roman philosophy, Kim argues that Paul seeks ratherto nourish the vitality of a diversecommunity and to criticize the ideologyof a powerful in-group in Corinth, amessage of particular importance forcontemporary global Christianity.

Описание: Paul did not write a systematic theology or specific church doctrines when he wrote Romans. His audience was Roman Christians, and his last will was to preach the gospel to all, especially gentiles in Spain. Through this letter, Paul wants to pave the way for a visit to Rome and expects their support on his mission trip to Spain. The question is this: What kind of the gospel does he want to share with them? Traditionally, the letter has been read from the perspective of forensic salvation that an individual justification occurs once and for all by faith in Christ. This view remains with the so-called New Perspective on Paul, and Christ's faithfulness has not been explored. Rereading the letter with a renewed concept of the good news in the letter, this book challenges the traditional reading of Romans and explores Paul's threefold gospel that features the gospel that is God-centered, Christ-exemplified, and Christian-imitated. His main concern is how gentiles can become children of God, as well as how Jews may live faithfully in Christ. In Romans, the good news is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith. It is not a set of knowledge about God or Jesus. Paul is eager to share this gospel of faith with the Roman Christians and to correct some misunderstandings about him, since his gospel is viewed as anti-Jewish or antinomian. ""Yung Suk Kim's new commentary on Paul's letter to the Romans is powerful good news for readers who are seeking the foundation for an honest and upright life at a moment when moral values seem to be disappearing from the public square. Kim courageously challenges the traditional reading of Romans as a forensic treatise on the exoneration of guilty sinners by the vicarious death of Jesus. Kim reclaims Paul's bold vision of the faithfulness of Jesus as the measure of a right life and the path forward to a just and reconciled world."" --L. L. Welborn, Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Literature, Fordham University ""Yung Suk Kim's book on Romans is a helpful, gospel-oriented explanation of Romans that consistently keeps Paul's apostolic mission in mind. Its advantages are that it takes seriously the faithfulness of Jesus, beginning with its explanation of Romans 3:22-26, its attention to Paul's focus on Israel and its salvation, and its attention to 12:1--15:13 as integral to Paul's argument. This book will work well to introduce undergraduate and seminary students to Paul's letter to the Romans."" --Mark Reasoner, Professor of Biblical Theology, Marian University Yung Suk Kim is the associate professor of New Testament and early Christianity at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, at Virginia Union University. Kim received the Scott and Stringfellow Outstanding Professor Award from VUU. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Preaching the New Testament Again (Cascade, 2019); Christ's Body in Corinth (2008); Biblical Interpretation (Pickwick, 2013); Resurrecting Jesus (Cascade, 2015); Messiah in Weakness (Cascade, 2016); and Toward Decentering the New Testament (Cascade, 2018, co-authored with Mitzi Smith).
Описание: Korean and Korean American Life Writing in Hawai'i examines such self-representing genres as lyric poems, oral history, autobiography, and memoirs written by Korean and Korean Americans from the early twentieth century to the present, in order to explore how these people have shaped their individual or collective identities. Their representations, produced in different periods by successive generations, reveal how Koreans in their diaspora to Hawai'i came to terms with their ethnic and local selves, and also how the sense of who and what they are changed over the years, both within and beyond the initial generation. Looking into their individual and collective identities in lyric poems, oral history, autobiography, and memoirs reveals how the earliest arrivals, their children, and their grandchildren have come to terms with their national, ethnic, and local selves, and how their sense of identity changes over the course of time, both within and beyond the initial generation. In the lyric poems found in Korean-language periodicals of the native-born generation, we can trace the significance of the motherland and Hawai'i for these writers' sense of identity. The oral histories of first-generation women, most of whom arrived as picture brides, also represent another "us" often vulnerable Koreans who define themselves in relation to both the present culture and to Korean men. The self developed by the second-, third-, and in-between-generation Koreans diversifies because their identity is not defined exclusively by their ancestral land, extending to Hawai'i and to America. This study focuses on three main areas of emphasis: Hawai'i; Korean language and culture; and life writing. By tracing how identity changes with each generation, this study reveals how identity formation for Hawai'i diasporic Koreans has evolved.
Eddie Fung has the distinction of being the only Chinese American soldier to be captured by the Japanese during World War II. He was then put to work on the Burma-Siam railroad, made famous by the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. In this moving and unforgettable memoir, Eddie recalls how he, a second-generation Chinese American born and raised in San Francisco's Chinatown, reinvented himself as a Texas cowboy before going overseas with the U.S. Army. On the way to the Philippines, his battalion was captured by the Japanese in Java and sent to Burma to undertake the impossible task of building a railroad through 262 miles of tropical jungle.
Working under brutal slave labor conditions, the men completed the railroad in fourteen months, at the cost of 12,500 POW and 70,000 Asian lives. Eddie lived to tell how his background helped him endure forty-two months of humiliation and cruelty and how his experiences as the sole Chinese American member of the most decorated Texan unit of any war shaped his later life.
