Lenz' Kindheit und Jugend sind von den Ereignissen des Dritten Reiches geprägt. Im Alter von 13 Jahren trat er der HJ bei, machte 1943 sein Notabitur und wurde dann Soldat bei der Marine der Reichswehr. Er desertierte in Dänemark und kam in englische Kriegsgefangenschaft. Diese Erlebnisse beeinflussen sein journalistisches und literarisches Werk. In seinem Roman "Die Deutschstunde", der 1968 erschien, setzt sich Lenz kritisch mit dem Dritten Reich auseinander. Der Protagonist des Romans ist Siggi Jepsen, ein Zögling einer Anstalt für schwererziehbare Jugendliche, der einen Deutschaufsatz zum Thema 'Die Freude der Pflicht' schreiben muss. Darin thematisiert Siggi den Konflikt mit seinem Vater, der zur Zeit des Nationalsozialismus Polizist im norddeutschen Rugbüll ist. Siggis Vater ist mit dem Maler Nansen befreundet, doch die NS-Zeit verändert diese Freundschaft. "Die Deutschstunde" schildert, wie der Polizist Jepsen die Durchsetzung des Malverbots für Nansen zu dessen persönlichem Feldzug macht. Nahezu blind erfüllt der Vater seine Pflicht, während der Sohn versucht, die Kunstwerke zu retten. Das Ende des Dritten Reiches bringt keine Veränderung. Der Vater wird kurzfristig interniert, kehrt jedoch später auf seinen Posten zurück, ungebrochen autoritätsgläubig. Mit der "Deutschstunde" konfrontiert Siegfried Lenz seine Leserschaft schonungslos mit scheinbar unpolitischer Pflichterfüllung und Heimattreue, welche in der Nachkriegszeit als tragender Pfeiler des Nationalsozialismus demaskiert wurde.
