In "Terra vergine", D'Annunzio descrive situazioni e vicende dei primitivi d'Abruzzo, prendendo come modelli i primitivi in "Vita dei campi" di Verga, ma insistendo sui colori paesaggistici e non trascurando l'uso pi volte della citazione dialettale. Come gi fu per l'ispirazione carducciana di "Primo vere", la sua prima raccolta di novelle si ispir al modello di maggior fama di quegli anni, quello verista del Verga, appunto, ma all'imitazione aggiunse la sua invenzione personale. A sottolineare la distanza che separa l'operazione dannunziana da quella verghiana nel libro il fascino sensuale per una Natura ancestrale ed ignota e lo stile letterariamente sostenuto.

Il libro raccoglie quanto a Genova fu detto dal poeta, in particolare il discorso di violento incitamento alla guerra per la "resurrezione" e "integrazione" della patria. Nella seconda parte il libro raccoglie i discorsi romani quando, come ricordato, non esit ad incitare i presenti al linciaggio del neutralista Giovanni Giolitti. Il libro ancora raccoglie la dichiarazione di guerra ed il messaggio del re Vittorio Emanuele III ai soldati.
