Joe L. Kincheloe (1950–2008) was one of North America’s leading critical pedagogy scholars. He defined post-formalist thought in terms of deconstruction, affectivity, and non-linearity. His deconstruction focused on the context of ideas, ideologies, and teaching. It was a form of sociological deconstruction, and as such, inspired by Derrida, but different from him as well. In effect, Kincheloe was trying to marry Derrida to Foucault by making deconstruction see power in thought, relationships, and the world. Kincheloe’s ‘turn to affect’ was inspired by feminism and radical pedagogy. It was ‘affect’ focused on (in)justice and the social practices of repression. His ‘self-other’ construct was inherently politicized by his identification of ‘unfreedom’ with capitalism and the assumption that this link determines affect. Kincheloe assumed that linear rationality was inadequate to understanding human needs and hopes. Freedom as dynamism was seen to be inherently non-linear. The prison of rationality (it can only repeat the same, over and over again) was the crux of his critique of Newtonian-Cartesian linearity. Kincheloe attempted to construct a concept of ‘place’—such as the classroom. But it was a particular, concrete classroom and not an abstract or theoretical one. Here, the three concepts could come together. ‘Place’ is context, and to understand it, deconstruction is needed. ‘Place’ exists as it is felt and requires affectivity; it is eventful, alive, and dynamic. It requires non-linearity to be understood. Post-formalism, Pedagogy Lives (in memory of Kincheloe’s contribution) encompasses each of the basic principles of Kincheloe’s post-formal thought.

Описание: The broad intent of Rediscovering Christanna is to document in a balanced way the important but largely overlooked history of Alexander Spotswood's Fort Christanna (1714-1718). In his book the author weaves together Colonial and Native narratives to give an expanded and culturally balanced account of what transpired in and around this colonial Virginia fort. The book provides an accessible overview of the Virginia governor's motivations and actions related to the creation of his fur trading fort, emphasizing its intended defensive, entrepreneurial, and educational functions. Beyond that, the book breaks new ground by focusing on the Native contexts for their interactions at Christanna -- their intentions as Indian people, the cultural meanings of indigenous actions, their educational experiences, and tribal strategies related to the fort. Drawing on ethnology, new archaeology, and a fresh look at primary historical documents, this book presents a multi-faceted and original account of a place where, in a perilous time, numerous American Indian tribes engaged the English to acquire European trade goods, to make war, or to make treaties. The author documents the reasons for and physical characteristics of the Governor's fort, emphasizing the importance of Indian labor and agency in all aspects of the fort's operations. The narrative also traces the complex English and intertribal conflicts that led to the fort's eventual demise. A related concern in the book is the historical and archaeological importance of the as yet undiscovered town, Chunkete Posse, that was built close to the fort by Saponie Indians. Significant features of the book are its emphasis on how tribal identities of the Christanna Indians persisted following the English abandonment of Fort Christanna, and on the importance of women's roles and stories in the historical account. Rediscovering Christanna is particularly valuable as it shows how the strategies of a small group of remnant Eastern Siouan tribes were successful against their powerful enemies - both English and Indian. In The Stigma of Genius: Einstein, Consciousness and Critical Education, we muse over ways in which to be, to become and to recognize uniqueness and different paths to genius. Understanding there is no prescribed procedure, we determine multiple actions, means and measures with which we recognize and teach to genius, we look at Einstein’s life and knowledges to connect our pedagogies and students. Today’s schools often exemplify an inability to stimulate and encourage students to find passion, goals and reasons to be educated. Many public school students do not succeed, they are disengaged, discouraged, and failing. Teachers are exhausted and overworked and lack respect and administrative support in districts controlled by local and national politics. Using Einstein as an example, but also a metaphor for educators, The Stigma of Genius is straight talk about the needs for schools/teachers/administrators/students to become critically and contextually aware. We argue for an education which is conscious of students’ needs and the nuances within each school and each classroom. Discussing cognition, classes, urban education and diversity, we have attempted to circle back to Einstein and understand ways to support and encourage today’s geniuses.
