From an acclaimed historian, a mesmerizing account of how medieval European Christians envisioned the paradoxical nature of holy objects
Between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, European Christians used in worship a plethora of objects, not only prayer books, statues, and paintings but also pieces of natural materials, such as stones and earth, considered to carry holiness, dolls representing Jesus and Mary, and even bits of consecrated bread and wine thought to be miraculously preserved flesh and blood. Theologians and ordinary worshippers alike explained, utilized, justified, and warned against some of these objects, which could carry with them both anti-Semitic charges and the glorious promise of heaven. Their proliferation and the reaction against them form a crucial background to the European-wide movements we know today as "reformations" (both Protestant and Catholic).
In a set of independent but inter-related essays, Caroline Bynum considers some examples of such holy things, among them beds for the baby Jesus, the headdresses of medieval nuns, and the footprints of Christ carried home from the Holy Land by pilgrims in patterns cut to their shape or their measurement in lengths of string. Building on and going beyond her well-received work on the history of materiality, Bynum makes two arguments, one substantive, the other methodological. First, she demonstrates that the objects themselves communicate a paradox of dissimilar similitude--that is, that in their very details they both image the glory of heaven and make clear that that heaven is beyond any representation in earthly things. Second, she uses the theme of likeness and unlikeness to interrogate current practices of comparative history. Suggesting that contemporary students of religion, art, and culture should avoid comparing things that merely "look alike," she proposes that humanists turn instead to comparing across cultures the disparate and perhaps visually dissimilar objects in which worshippers as well as theorists locate the "other" that gives their religion enduring power.
Описание: Abstract: This disseration extends the rational voter model to include a measure of personal freedom which captures certain motivations not previously accounted for in prior empirical studies of voter turnout in U.S. presidential elections. Fixed-effects estimations of a panel data set of publicly available data reflecting explanatory variables for the 50 states for the presidential election years 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 suggest that this previously unaccounted for variable, personal freedom (PERSONAL-F), may exercise a negative and statistically significant influence on the expected benefits of voting and hence a negative and statistically significant impact on the voter participation rate. State-level empirical evidence is presented to support the hypothesis that, after allowing for a variey of other factors, greater personal freedom decreases voter participation, ceteris paribus. Описание: Considering the development and ongoing influence of Black thought
From 1900 to the present, people of African descent living in the United States have drawn on homegrown and diasporic minds to create a Black intellectual tradition engaged with ideas on race, racial oppression, and the world. This volume presents essays on the diverse thought behind the fight for racial justice as developed by African American artists and intellectuals; performers and protest activists; institutions and organizations; and educators and religious leaders. By including both women’s and men’s perspectives from the U.S. and the Diaspora, the essays explore the full landscape of the Black intellectual tradition. Throughout, contributors engage with important ideas ranging from the consideration of gender within the tradition, to intellectual products generated outside the intelligentsia, to the ongoing relationship between thought and concrete effort in the quest for liberation.
Expansive in scope and interdisciplinary in practice, The Black Intellectual Tradition delves into the ideas that animated a people’s striving for full participation in American life.

Описание:
The will to survive, one of our most important traits, is the core theme of "No, It's Not A Shelter," the book that arose from Anthony Bynum's study of the underclass and the economic decisions that make for survival. This is the fictionalized account of "The Underground Economy," the 2016 book Bynum wrote that chronicled his observations about this fluid subset of Americans, where he reported on the issues surrounding their underclass status and did analysis regarding his observations on how individuals not fully integrated into our economy survive. These groups include the homeless, gang members, and undocumented immigrants. He took what he learned from the project and fictionalized it in "No, It's Not A Shelter."
The story focuses on our heroine, Cynthia, and a somewhat odd relationship she forms with our other featured character, Vincent. They share a symbiotic relationship. The other characters represent Corporate America, complicated bad guys, and interested family members.
The theme of life for the disaffected is never far from the surface.

Описание:
Grandpa Donkey Abraham is a great storyteller. He is a walking historian. However, his job can best be described as teacher.
He has many techniques to get his listeners to learn.
His greatest message is for us not to demean, threaten, hate, bully or reject anyone but with a caring heart and a loving spirit to teach and to entertain.
He will not deny that he loves his Creator. He praises the Creator with joy. He teaches all of the barnyard animals to praise and give God thanks all the time. God loves us all, animals and humans, "so does Grandpa Donkey Abraham."
History tells us who we are. The present is preparing us for what we are becoming. The future is a product of today.
Grandpa Donkey Abraham would say after saying all that, "But God "
I, the author, pray that you will tell stories to your children like my father did when I was growing up. His doing so is some of the greatest memories of my childhood. Hard work, church, and my father's stories saturated my mind with images of times past.
The bad comes when you don't want it to, but thank God for the good. I can go back in time and pull out a memory card and replay the story again. If you have been around me for a while, I am sure I have told you at least one of his stories.
Now you have a reason to read Numbers 22:1-35 in the Bible to your children.
I would like to continue to write stories of Grandpa Donkey Abraham.
So can I count on you to listen and learn?
