Performing Powerilluminates how colonial dominance in Indonesia was legitimized, maintained, negotiated, and contested through the everyday staging and public performance of power between the colonizer and colonized.
Arnout Van der Meer's Performing Power explores what seemingly ordinary interactions reveal about the construction of national, racial, social, religious, and gender identities as well as the experience of modernity in colonial Indonesia. Through acts of everyday resistance, such as speaking a different language, withholding deference, and changing one's appearance and consumer behavior, a new generation of Indonesians contested the hegemonic colonial appropriation of local culture and the racial and gender inequalities that it sustained. Over time these relationships of domination and subordination became inverted, and by the twentieth century the Javanese used the tropes of Dutch colonial behavior to subvert the administrative hierarchy of the state.

Описание:
Dynar and Eenar are elephants on an elephant farm in Thailand. They are abused and forced to perform and give rides to tourists. They despair, seeing no resolution of their plight. Eventually, they realize only their bodies are enslaved. Their minds are free to adopt a perspective that lifts them above their physical misery. This story, written in first grade vocabulary, can be a used to discuss ethical treatment of animals with children. The story is also a metaphor, sending a message of hope to abused children, who are largely unrepresented in children's picture book literature...

Описание: If you ever wanted to read a book that describes the history of the world, as well as the origin and evolution of humankind in a nutshell, this book is a must-read. We live in an age of information and technology, and everything we want to know about the world-whether it is related to history, philosophy, science or religion-is available at our fingertips. Yet, the more information we have at our fingertips, the more confused we seem to become. The traditional answers to the age-old philosophical questions about who we are, where we came from, and where we are heading; should be reevaluated and redefined in light of the abundance of information available at our fingertips today. This book compiles all the essential information we need to know, in order to reevaluate and redefine our deepest beliefs. The forty chapters of this book provide great insights into the origin and evolution of human civilization, by exploring the most recent scientific theories of our Modern Age. It also explores all the hallmark events of history, and analyzes those events from the point of view of science, religion and the philosophical theories that emerged throughout the ages. Each of the chapters of this book should be viewed as dots on a map that represents the journey of humankind, from the beginning of time till the 21st century. As you read through the various chapters, how you choose to connect the dots is entirely up to you. But no matter how you connect those dots, the lines that you draw should represent a framework for understanding the nature and history of this world, and our place within it.

Описание: Measuring research impact and engagement is a much debated topic in the UK and internationally. This book is the first to provide a critical review of the research impact agenda, situating it within international efforts to improve research utilisation. Using empirical data, it discusses research impact tools and processes for key groups such as academics, research funders, ‘knowledge brokers’ and research users, and considers the challenges and consequences of incentivising and rewarding particular articulations of research impact. It draws on wide ranging qualitative data, combined with theories about the science-policy interplay and audit regimes to suggest ways to improve research impact.
