Описание: The Oxford Handbooks of Political Science are the essential guide to the state of political science today. With engaging contributions from 39 major international scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Political Institutions provides the key point of reference for anyone working on political institutions and beyond.
Описание: This book examines how the structure of electoral institutions - the rules of democratic contestation that determine the manner in which citizens choose their representatives - affects political corruption, defined as the abuse of state power or resources for campaign finance or party-building purposes.
During the Cold War, the U.S. built a series of alliances with Asian nations to erect a bulwark against the spread of communism and provide security to the region. Despite pressure to end bilateral alliances in the postCold War world, they persist to this day, even as new multilateral institutions have sprung up around them. The resulting architecture may aggravate rivalries as the U.S., China, and others compete for influence. However, Andrew Yeo demonstrates how Asia's complex array of bilateral and multilateral agreements may ultimately bring greater stability and order to a region fraught with underlying tensions.
Asia's Regional Architecture transcends traditional international relations models. It investigates change and continuity in Asia through the lens of historical institutionalism. Refuting claims regarding the demise of the liberal international order, Yeo reveals how overlapping institutions can promote regional governance and reduce uncertainty in a global context. In addition to considering established institutions such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation, he discusses newer regional arrangements including the East Asia Summit, Trans-Pacific Partnership, and the Belt and Road Initiative. This book has important implications for how policymakers think about institutional design and regionalism in Asia and beyond.

Описание: Josip Broz Tito's saying that 'one should not hold on to the law like a drunken man holds on to a fence' remains a valid piece of popular wisdom today, encapsulating the problem of weak rule of law in Southeast European societies. This book poses the question of why democratization in Southeast Europe disappointed initial expectations and claims that this is due to the dominance of authoritarian parties over regime change. Their rule established nondemocratic governance practices that continue to subvert rule of law principles twenty years later. The unique contribution of this book is in providing empirical evidence for the argument that post-socialist transformation proceeded in a double movement, whereby advances to formal democratic institutions were subverted through nondemocratic rule. This misfit helps explain why improvements to formal democratic institutions did not result in expected democratization advances. 'Essential reading for anyone interested in the politics of Southeast Europe and democratization.' Professor Frank Schimmelfennig, Center for Comparative and International Studies (ETH Zurich) "Danijela Dolenec's bookof Democratic Institutions and Authoritarian Rule is a major contribution to the study of Southeastern Europe and post-communist democratization due to its sophisticated methodology, rich empirical research and comparative scope.' Professor Florian Bieber, Centre for Southeast European Studies, University of Graz, Austria 'This book is admirable in scope, ambition and in methodological self-awareness. It represents comparative research in political science at its best. Democratic Institutions and Authoritarian Rule significantly advances our understanding of the post-1989 transformations in Europe and is certainly a 'must read' for all students of comparative politics.' Professor Grzegorz Ekiert Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies, Harvard University 'Danijela Dolenec has written an outstanding, ground breaking book exploring how states struggle to democratize after authoritarian parties have presided over regime change, colonized the state and exploited the economy.' Milada Anna Vachudova, Associate Professor University of North Carolina

Описание: This book presents an analysis of five anticorruption agencies (ACAs) from Serbia, Macedonia and Croatia, exploring the impact of organisational factors and leadership on their enforcement patterns during the first decade of the transitional reforms (2001-2012). Contrary to the conventional theory of agency insulation, the analysis reveals that the ACAs’ de facto autonomy was not crucially shaped by their statutory independence, but rather by the reputational management of their leaders. The book draws on a mixture of qualitative and quantitative analysis to document these reputational strategies and how they shaped the ACAs’ de facto autonomy. The findings also suggest that that the ACAs’ organisational model – defined by the delegated mandate and powers (preventative vs suppressive) – represented a key variable that mediated under which conditions high de facto autonomy can be achieved. The book offers contributions to the study of anticorruption policy and ethics regulation, as well as the wider inquiry into drivers of agency independence, particularly in transitional contexts.

Описание: Mungiu-Pippidi investigates the efficacy of the European Union`s promotion of good governance through its funding and conditionalities both within EU proper and in the developing world. For students and scholars of comparative politics, European politics, and development studies, particularly those examining governance and corruption.
Описание: Policy makers and academics alike have mistakenly promoted an agenda which takes democratic and consolidated states as the model and the goal for effective governance. In reality, Western industrial democracies are the exception, whereas areas of limited statehood are everywhere, and can still be well-governed. The book shows how and why.
