Описание: Today we think of ukiyo-e - `the pictures of the floating world` - as masterpieces of Japanese art. Yet it is often said that ukiyo-e were little appreciated in their own time. Julie Nelson Davis debunks this myth and demonstrates that ukiyo-e was thoroughly appreciated as a field of artistic production, worthy of connoisseurship by contemporaries.

Описание: Step way back in time to little-known ancient persia for a rollicking adventure on the silk road. Silk Road merchant Persicus' life is turned upside down by an elderly one-armed man who entices Persicus to join him on a quest to find the legendary Lost Treasure of the Silk Road. But bandits, betrayal, and bottomless pits are the least of his troubles.
Taking advantage of the fall of the Persian Empire, evil King Salman leads his army of cutthroat bandits to conquer the ancient Sogdian enclave of Mishin. Strategically located on a major Silk Road trade route, this tolerant city of Zoroastrians welcomed all peaceful people and together they resisted centuries of attacks by the Islamic forces that destroyed the Persian Empire.
On the eve of King Salman's attack, Persicus finds himself in the royal palace of Mishin. Can he summon the knowledge accumulated from a life traveling the Silk Road across the Asian continent to protect the benevolent King Ormozd against Salman's undefeated Turanian Army while trying to win the heart of the woman he loves?

Описание: "This is the story of Teru Noguchi, American daughter of Japanese ancestry. This is the record of a people in bewilderment, forsaken by their land of adoption. We were forced from our homes. We were herded into confinement as a demonstration of loyalty. Yet we were denied the rights of loyal men. Not understanding why nor knowing where, with the whole of our worldly goods clutched tightly in our hands and trying desperately to keep together the ties of blood, we stumbled wearily through shocking heat and stifling dust - without liberty, without home, with uncertain future. We cheered in the darkness on the dregs of disillusionment, of bitterness, of hopeless- ness; we cheated, we lied, we were honest, we were brave, we stood on the hot burning sands and made our decisions, each according to his con- science. We were different, we were humans. Even as you. " -From the Preface by Hiroshi Nakamura Treadmill is a truly unique and historically significant novel and the only book written about life in the Japanese-American internment camps during World War II written at the time by an internee. Hiroshi Nakamura, along with his family, spent the war years in Salinas Assembly Center, Salinas, California; Camp II of the Poston Relocation Center, Parker, Arizona; and Tule Lake Segregation Center, Newell, California. It was during this period that he put down on paper what he was observing, experiencing, and hearing and expressed them in this novel. Nakamura captures exquisitely the thinking and mood of the people. It accurately evokes the fears, anxieties, suspicions, cynicisms and passions brought out by camp life. Nakamura almost succeeded in getting Treadmill published in the late 1940s. While editors and publishers thought well of the novel, they would not publish it as it was too sensitive an issue. Professor Peter Suzuki discovered Treadmill while he was doing some research on internment camps of Japanese Americans. This revised edition of Treadmill contains a new introductory essay by Professor Tara Fickle discussing the historical importance of Nakamuras work. Also included are a series of photographs of Japanese internment camps in California taken by renowned photographer Ansel Adams taken in 1943. Adams had unprecedented access to life inside the camps and these photographs provide an exceptional visual accompaniment to Nakamuras story.

Описание: The Fabian Waltz is a witty romance set against the backdrop of late Victorian London, where poverty is all but ignored. Playwright George Bernard Shaw's life and work are upended by a challenging woman he cannot win. Shaw and his fellow Fabians fight for social justice and discover love along the way.

George Bernard Shaw, the Don Juan of London's progressive Fabian Society, finds himself attracted to an Irish millionairess: Charlotte Payne-Townshend. Shaw's best friend and fellow Fabian is Sidney Webb, a romantic Cockney intellectual. Webb pursues a beautiful social reformer named Beatrice Potter. Potter put aside the comforts of her upper-class life to go undercover in the city's sweatshops to expose the meager wages and horrid working conditions of the urban poor.

During the summer, the two couples share a country cottage. Oscar Wilde joins them to avoid the temptations of London - and his lover, Lord Alfred Bosie Douglas. The Fabian work ethic, vegetarianism and social activism clash with Wilde's self-indulgence. He offers sage advice and amusing commentary as the romances bloom, then fade.

Returning to London, the friends make life-altering decisions, including one that leads to a tragic destiny.

But soon a chance encounter with Rosa, the daughter of their Jewish housekeeper, leaves Liesel in no doubt that something isn't right. That this government's rules are not fair and that others aren't as safe as she is. When Rosa begs Liesel to help-pressing her grandfather's gold pocket watch into Liesel's hand-Liesel recklessly agrees.

She will help hide Rosa and her family-in the dusty, unused rooms at the top of their house-even if it means putting everyone she loves in danger. Even if it means risking her own life.

Frankfurt, 1946 An idealistic American captain, Sam Houghton, arrives in Germany to interrogate prominent Nazis on trial and to help rebuild a battered country. He hires an enigmatic and damaged woman named Anna as his interpreter. But, as sparks fly between them, the question of what happened to Anna in the war raises its head.

Because Anna has secrets-ones that link her to the Nazi party, the darkest days in Europe's history, and the story of one gold pocket watch and two young women who became friends even when they were told it was impossible...

A compelling and haunting story about courage, love and betrayal set in war-torn Berlin. Fans of The Alice Network, All the Light We Cannot See and The Nightingale will be not be able to put this down.
