This study brings us closer to understanding the relationship between fashion and literature. The book focuses on how the irony present in Machado de Assis’ Dom Casmurro is also evident in the fashion portrayed in the novel. It reveals that fashion can be seen from Machado’s perspective as a literary strategy while also participating in the construction of the characters in the plot of the narrative.
In the first appearance of the protagonist of Dom Casmurro, Capitu has simple ‘cloth shoes’ sewn by herself. In this little description by Machado, a whole world is hidden, in the same way that in each garment, costumes and props of the characters hide literary games – the games of light, shadow and irony that can be seen in the novel.
Through the descriptions of the garments, it is possible to perceive the first steps towards global capitalist expansion at the end of the nineteenth century, when consumer society was still forming. This book gives insight into Brazilian society in transition at the end of the nineteenth century, as observed by Machado de Assis.
How can we invent new certain knowledge in a methodical manner? This question stands at the heart of Salomon Maimon's theory of invention. Chikurel argues that Maimon's contribution to the ars inveniendi tradition lies in the methods of invention which he prescribes for mathematics. Influenced by Proclus' commentary on Elements, these methods are applied on examples taken from Euclid's Elements and Data. Centering around methodical invention and scientific genius, Maimon's philosophy is unique in an era glorifying the artistic genius, known as Geniezeit. Invention, primarily defined as constructing syllogisms, has implications on the notion of being given in intuition as well as in symbolic cognition. Chikurel introduces Maimon's notion of analysis in the broader sense, grounded not only on the principle of contradiction but on intuition as well. In philosophy, ampliative analysis is based on Maimon's logical term of analysis of the object, a term that has yet to be discussed in Maimonian scholarship. Following its introduction, a new version of the question quid juris? arises. Описание: Albert Salomon (1891 - 1996) was an eminent German-Jewish sociologist. He studied art history, religious history, and philosophy at Humboldt University in Berlin philosophy at the University of Freiburg and sociology at the University of Heidelberg. At Heidelberg, he studied under Max Weber, Georg Luk? cs, and Karl Mannheim. His fellow students included, among other great social thinkers, Hannah Arendt and Hans Speier. After obtaining his doctorate in sociology under Mannheim, he taught at the Deutsche Hochschule f? r Politik, but lost his job there when the Nazis came to power in January 1933. He received an offer from Alvin Johnson to teach at the University in Exile at the New School for Social Research and, with his family, migrated to New York City in early 1935. Over the years, Salomon taught many courses in the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science at the New School, including seminars on Weber, Durkheim, the history of social thought, and Balzac as a sociologist. His students revered him for his breadth and depth of learning and his exacting standards. Later scholars, including the editors of From Albert Salomon: Essays on Social Thinkers, regard him as one of the most important interpreters of Western thought and as an exemplar of the great Jewish intellectual tradition.
