Описание: This is a collection of letters written by nine African American defendants in the infamous March 1931 Scottsboro, Alabama, rape case. Though most of the defendants were barely literate and all were teenagers when incarcerated, over the course of almost two decades they learned the rudiments of effective letter writing and in doing so forcefully expressed a wide range of perspectives on the falsity of the charges against them. They were known as the ""Scottsboro Boys,"" and their incarceration became a cause celebre both in the United States and internationally. Noted social activists, authors, politicians, family members and ordinary people, condemned in letters what they viewed as a prime example of southern American judicial racism.

Central to this book is the chronologically structured presentation of letters (1931-1950) that exhibit an intellectual growth and ability on the part of the defendants to effectively express their thoughts about their case and their innocence. In addition there is a selected body of legal correspondence from attorneys and members of Scottsboro support committees that help to contextualise this work. The original grammar, syntax and vernacular of the defendants is maintained in a desire to preserve the original and inimitable strength of these letters.

Описание: "The legend says that a long time ago we lived on land surrounded by water that we couldn't drink . . ." --Traditional beginning to Cherokee stories Cherokee origin stories have been handed down over thousands of years. They intertwine to form a rich history of oral and artistic traditions that tell the Cherokee story. The vast array of art objects unearthed from prehistoric mounds throughout the southeastern United States evidence the antiquity of this rich cultural history. To some, these may be artifacts, but to the Cherokee people, they are tribal history: objects that were touched by ancestors, ancestors who have continued to teach their skills through gifts they left behind to be discovered. Stories in this book reflect how history has woven itself into the fabric of the present. The stories are intimate and told by the artists, by family members, by friends in their own words. The telling will make you feel as though you are fortunate enough to sit in the presence of the Cherokee artists, who intimately share the story of themselves, of their art, who their family was, how they came to be artists, who and what influenced them, and how their art reflects who they are as Cherokee people. They are the Cherokee National Treasures. The Cherokee National Treasure Award was established in 1988 by the Cherokee Nation and the Cherokee National Historical Society. Currently, there are ninety-four individuals who have been designated Cherokee National Treasures. They have all been recognized not only for their roles as artisans, but also for their roles as teachers, mentors, and advocates. The award recipients have preserved and perpetuated traditional and contemporary artistic methods and practices, ensuring that their arts and skills are not lost. These powerful stories of Cherokee National Treasures are captivating and leave lasting impressions of Cherokee life, values, and artistic traditions--cultural treasures that continue into the twenty-first century.
Black Domers tells the compelling story of racial integration at the University of Notre Dame in the post–World War II era. In a series of seventy-five essays, beginning with the first African-American to graduate from Notre Dame in 1947 to a member of the class of 2017 who also served as student body president, we can trace the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of the African-American experience at Notre Dame through seven decades.
Don Wycliff and David Krashna’s book is a revised edition of a 2014 publication. With a few exceptions, the stories of these graduates are told in their own words, in the form of essays on their experiences at Notre Dame. The range of these experiences is broad; joys and opportunities, but also hardships and obstacles, are recounted. Notable among several themes emerging from these essays is the importance of leadership from the top in successfully bringing African-Americans into the student body and enabling them to become fully accepted, fully contributing members of the Notre Dame community. The late Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, president of the university from 1952 to 1987, played an indispensable role in this regard and also wrote the foreword to the book.
This book will be an invaluable resource for Notre Dame graduates, especially those belonging to African-American and other minority groups, specialists in race and diversity in higher education, civil rights historians, and specialists in race relations.

Описание:
The American Dream of success for many Asian Americans includes the highest levels of education. But what does it mean to live that success? In Straight A’s Asian American students at Harvard reflect on their common experiences with discrimination, immigrant communities, their relationships to their Asian heritage, and their place in the university. They also explore the difficulties of living up to family expectations and the real-world effects of the "model minority" stereotype. While many of the issues they face are familiar to a wide swath of college students, their examinations of race, ethnicity, gender and sexuality, and culture directly speak to the Asian American experience in U.S. higher education. Unique and revealing, intimate and unreserved, Straight A’s furthers the conversation about immigrant histories, racial and ethnic stereotypes, and multiculturalism in contemporary American society.
