Jewish Displaced Persons (DPs) survived in concentration and death camps, in hiding, and as exiles in the Soviet interior. After liberation in the land of their persecutors, some also attended university to fulfill dreams of becoming doctors, engineers and professionals. In The New Life: Jewish Students of Postwar Germany, Jeremy Varon tells the improbable story of the nearly eight hundred young Jews, mostly from Poland and orphaned by the Holocaust, who studied in universities in the American Zone of Occupied Germany. Drawing on interviews he conducted with the Jewish alumni in the United States and Israel and the records of their Student Union, Varon reconstructs how the students built a sense of purpose and a positive vision of the future even as the wounds of the past persisted.Varon explores the keys to students’ renewal, including education itself, the bond they enjoyed with one another as a substitute family, and their efforts both to reconnect with old passions and to revive a near-vanquished European Jewish intelligentsia. The New Life also explores the relationship between Jews and Germans in occupied Germany. Varon shows how mutual suspicion and resentment dominated interactions between the groups and explores the subtle ways anti-Semitism expressed itself just after the war. Moments of empathy also emerge, in which Germans began to reckon with the Nazi past. Finally, The New Life documents conflicts among Jews as they struggled to chart a collective future, while nationalists, both from Palestine and among DPs, insisted that Zionism needed “pioneers, not scholars,” and tried to force the students to quit their studies.Rigorously researched and passionately written, The New Life speaks to scholars, students and general readers with interest in the Holocaust, Jewish and German history, the study of trauma and the experiences of refugees displaced by war and genocide. With liberation nearly seventy years in the past, it is also among the very last studies based on living contact with Holocaust survivors.

Book Love: Twenty Essays on an Affair without End is about book love (or bibliophilia) and book lovers (or bibliophiles). It discusses the subject from multiple angles and perspectives. Why do some people (the author included) become bibliophiles? Why do they love, purchase, collect, and cherish books, write about them, and build, support and donate to libraries? Who are some of the worlds great book collectors, past and present. Where can you find the worlds most beautiful libraries, and the most famous or unusual booksellers? What have some of the book lovers or experts said about their book love and book acquiring experiences? Where and how can book lovers and professionals learn more about rare books? The text is accompanied by illustrations of the people, events and achievements relayed. It discusses what makes books old, rare and beautiful from the authors perspective and presents samples of each. And it closes with timely speculation about the future of the printed book, booksellers, and libraries in the digital age. Bibliophilia has sometimes been compared to a disease without cure. The essays between these covers help us appreciate why.

He was also a full contemporary of Adam Smith (1723-1790), father of classical economics. They died a year apart, and they both deserved and have been honored with statues. This book leaves no doubt about where Mr. Varon's preferences lie, especially in his retirement. The book follows in substance and in spirit his last one titled Book Love: Twelve Essays on an Affair without End (2018). Uncovers the long history of how Latino manhood was integral to the formation of Latino identity
In the first ever book-length study of Latino manhood before the Civil Rights Movement, Before Chicano examines Mexican American print culture to explore how conceptions of citizenship and manhood developed in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The year 1848 saw both the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that ended the U.S. Mexican War and the year of the Seneca Falls Convention, the first organized conference on women's rights in the United States. These concurrent events signaled new ways of thinking about U.S. citizenship, and placing these historical moments into conversation with the archive of Mexican American print culture, Varon offers an expanded temporal frame for Mexican Americans as long-standing participants in U.S. national projects.
Pulling from a wide-variety of familiar and lesser-known works--from fiction and newspapers to government documents, images, and travelogues--Varon illustrates how Mexican Americans during this period envisioned themselves as U.S. citizens through cultural depictions of manhood. Before Chicano reveals how manhood offered a strategy to disparate Latino communities across the nation to imagine themselves as a cohesive whole--as Mexican Americans--and as political agents in the U.S. Though the Civil Rights Movement is typically recognized as the origin point for the study of Latino culture, Varon pushes us to consider an intellectual history that far predates the late twentieth century, one that is both national and transnational. He expands our framework for imagining Latinos' relationship to the U.S. and to a past that is often left behind.

For the past eight years Chicago television Traffic Anchor Roz Varon has been recording her travels in words and images. This book is designed to be a keepsake for those readers who enjoy vicarious adventures, and for those who seek ideas for their own trips across the U.S. and in foreign lands. Written with honesty, enthusiasm, and a grateful sense of wonder, Roz and her family enlighten her audience with little known facts, humorous anecdotes, and heartwarming insights into her personal life. We are Roz's awestruck travel companions at the inauguration of President Barack Obama, students of history while roaming the Jewish Deep South, and gleeful visitors to Walt Disney World - which our author considers "The Happiest Place on Earth."
As we venture to other continents, we move through sacred places in Israel, joyous sites in Ireland, and legendary landmarks in the southern United Kingdom.
Perhaps the most fun we have with Roz and her family is the traveling the famous Route 66, a treasured Americana road trip that will surely have readers packing their maps and bags.
While all appears sunny and careful in these pages, we also learn that Roz Varon is a more than 10-year Metastatic Breast Cancer Survivor. This medical facts adds poignancy, courage, and inspiration for all those whose lives have been touched by the illness.
