Описание:

A meticulous cartography of how outer forces shape young peoples inner lives. --Esquire, Best Books of Spring 2021

In conversation with young adults and experts alike, journalist Rainesford Stauffer explores how the incessant pursuit of a best life has put extraordinary pressure on young adults today, across our personal and professional lives--and how ordinary, meaningful experiences may instead be the foundation of a fulfilled and contented life.

Young adulthood: the time of our lives when, theoretically, anything can happen, and the pressure is on to make sure everything does. Social media has long been the scapegoat for a generation of unhappy young people, but perhaps the forces working beneath us--wage stagnation, student debt, perfectionism, and inflated costs of living--have a larger, more detrimental impact on the world we post to our feeds.

An Ordinary Age puts young adults at the center as Rainesford Stauffer examines our obsessive need to live and post our #bestlife, and the culture that has defined that life on narrow, and often unattainable, terms. From the now required slate of (often unpaid) internships, to the loneliness epidemic, to the stress of finding yourself through school, work, and hobbies--the world is demanding more of young people these days than ever before. And worse, its leaving little room for our generation to ask the big questions about who they want to be, and what makes a life feel meaningful.

Perhaps were losing sight of the things that fulfill us: strong relationships, real roots in a community, and the ability to question how we want our lives to look and feel, even when thats different from what we see on the Gram. Stauffer makes the case that many of our most formative young adult moments are the ordinary ones: finding our people and sticking with them, learning to care for ourselves on our own terms, and figuring out who we are when the other stuff--the GPAs, job titles, the filters--fall away.

Описание: Stauffer Miller's latest book, Sandwich Soldiers, Sailors, Sons: A Cape Cod Town in the Civil War, tells the story of the Cape Cod, Massachusetts community of Sandwich before, during and after the Civil War. Sandwich was unique among Cape Cod's Civil War-era communities in that its economy was industrial rather than maritime. Boston businessman Deming Jarves established a glassmaking factory there in 1825. Irish immigrants soon arrived to work in Jarves's factory. They were Cape Cod's first Irish and also first Catholics. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Sandwich's population stood at 4,500, a sizeable increase from what it was before the factory's arrival. A substantial portion of that increase was Irish factory workers and their families.English settlers colonized Sandwich in 1637, well before the arrival of the factory and the Irish. A descendant of those settlers was Charles Chipman, born in 1829. He received some schooling at a Sandwich academy and in 1850 enlisted in the army. After serving several years he obtained his discharge, returned home, married, formed a militia company and when the war began received a captain's commission. Because he was a well-known and trusted local man, and had some military experience, he soon recruited a company of volunteers. About half of his recruits were Irish factory workers. Many of the others, though not Irish, were also drawn from the factory. Chipman's glassmaking volunteers went off to the war in May 1861, just a month after its beginning. It would be another fourteen months before another company of Cape Codders marched to the war. This was in part because men of military age in the other communities were at sea when the war began, rather than at home working in a factory. Thus, it was a combination of two factors, an on-hand pool of men from which to recruit and the right sort of man to do the recruiting, that allowed Sandwich to send men to the war so early. The book follows the fortunes of Chipman and his men through their many campaigns. It also follows the course of the community's other soldiers as well as its men who entered the Union navy. Several letter collections provide insights into the Sandwich home front.Miller's first two books discussed all the Cape Cod communities and their army, navy and civilian contributions to the war effort. Sandwich Soldiers etc narrows the focus to the Cape community that sent the first, and the most, fighting men to the Union cause. That tighter focus allows for discussion of not just the soldiers and sailors themselves but their families too. Thus, readers will find Sandwich Soldiers etc both an engaging and highly personal story of Cape Cod and the Civil War.

Описание:

Cassandra is only five years old when her mother and sister disappear into the night, leaving her alone with an abusive father. She awaits for their return as days turn into weeks, then months, then years. Driven by loneliness and wanting answers, Cassandra grabs at every lifeline trying to make sense of her life on the edge of a little town where everyone seems to know more about her family than she does. Ignoring her father's advice to keep a low profile and his words, "Better to remain silent and thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt," Cassandra visits the only two buildings in her rural neighborhood. The tumbledown shack across the road and a little country church beyond the brambles and bushes start to provide clues. Cassandra's mistakes and do-overs and inner growth and development form the backbone of Do Not Be Deceived. Clinging fiercely to the God she barely knows, she weathers the storms of adolescence and struggles to sort out the good influences from the bad. As she enters adulthood, she begins to realize that her shame because of abandonment and abuse can be turned into something good for God.

Описание:

Every life has a story. Human nature looks for meaning in all circumstances. Our journeys seldom unfold smoothly, but amidst turmoil and tragedy, mind-numbing boredom or maddening frustration, the mind weaves a narrative that tries to make sense of it all.

Kathleen Stauffer's previous novels have shown how God molds the lifelong spiritual journeys of those who seek him. In this, her sixth book, she zooms in for a closer look at the nitty-gritty of life.

Summoned includes a novelette and six short stories, each of which portrays a unique individual facing unexpected challenges. Despite the sometimes dark subject matter, the characters are painted with such loving details and their stories are so well-surrounded with the context of an eternal viewpoint that the general effect is one of hope. Each protagonist in this book of stories is an affirmation that our stories, too, may be a part of a far-reaching narrative and that our lives can be part of something bigger and beyond our imaginations.

Описание:

This book addresses the deeper issues that matter most in life: faith, wisdom, values, spirituality, relationships, connection, and self-reflection. As our world becomes more and more secular, people remain restless and hungry to discuss these important topics. What does it mean to grow spiritually? What does it mean to do meaningful soul work? What are the values and priorities that should matter most? What type of culture will our children and grandchildren inherit? Here are a few insights that I believe to be true.

-All human beings long for meaning and deeper purpose in their lives.

-Jesus Christ continues to speak to and challenge our culture.

-Issues of character and integrity are very important.

-Growth in the spiritual life has become much more challenging in this busy age of technology, multi- tasking, and over-commitment.

-Relationships are essential and can cause great joy and fulfillment as well as pain and heartache.

-Politics and ideology have become both polarizing and toxic in many ways, deeply dividing families and friendships.

-Wisdom is much more valuable than knowledge.

-Social isolation and loneliness will continue to be one of the great challenges of the twenty-first century.

-We live in an age of anxiety, where fear abounds and overwhelms many.

-We all long to move beyond superficiality to a much deeper level of connection.

-There are many values that must be passed down from generation to generation
