Описание: This book is designed to serve as a handy resource tool for new and experienced leaders. It highlights the critical principles needed to address challenges sure to arise during your tenure as a leader and provides proven ways of addressing them. Principles can often take us to uncomfortable places we would rather not be. When having to address difficult situations, youll find that following your principles are seldom the easiest thing to do. Nonetheless, it is imperative that we follow them because they are the right thing to do. Youll find that these Principles are indifferent to friendships, party affiliation, tribal ethos, nationalities, ethnicities or established organizational cultures. They are applicable to virtually any situation, whether minor or major and will point you towards the right decision. It was the commitment to each of these suggested principles that guided me and my staff in making difficult decisions, allowed us to feel confident in our stances and to withstand the stressful circumstances swirling around us and the harsh criticisms directed at us. Collectively, these principles served as our north star, allowing us to navigate through the rough waters of unforeseen circumstances. If applied, they will successfully guide you and your leadership team as well.

Описание:

Selected as a Best Book of the Year by Esquire

"Couldn't put it down." -Charlamagne Tha God
"Mesmerizing." -Raekwon da Chef
"Insightful, moving, necessary." -Shea Serrano
"Cathartic." -The New Yorker
"A classic." -The Washington Post

The explosive, never-before-told story behind the historic rise of the Wu-Tang Clan, as told by one of its founding members, Lamont "U-God" Hawkins.

"It's time to write down not only my legacy, but the story of nine dirt-bomb street thugs who took our everyday life--scrappin' and hustlin'and tryin' to survive in the urban jungle of New York City--and turned that into something bigger than we could possibly imagine, something that took us out of the projects for good, which was the only thing we all wanted in the first place." --Lamont "U-God" Hawkins

The Wu-Tang Clan are considered hip-hop royalty. Remarkably, none of the founding members have told their story--until now. Here, for the first time, the quiet one speaks.

Lamont "U-God" Hawkins was born in Brownsville, New York, in 1970. Raised by a single mother and forced to reckon with the hostile conditions of project life, U-God learned from an early age how to survive. And surviving in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s was no easy task--especially as a young black boy living in some of the city's most ignored and destitute districts. But, along the way, he met and befriended those who would eventually form the Clan's core: RZA, GZA, Method Man, Raekwon, Ol' Dirty Bastard, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, and Masta Killa. Brought up by the streets, and bonding over their love of hip-hop, they sought to pursue the impossible: music as their ticket out of the ghetto.

U-God's unforgettable first-person account of his journey, from the streets of Brooklyn to some of the biggest stages around the world, is not only thoroughly affecting, unfiltered, and explosive but also captures, in vivid detail, the making of one of the greatest acts in American music history.

Описание: Richard Stoddert Ewell is best known as the Confederate General selected by Robert E. Lee to replace "Stonewall" Jackson as chief of the Second Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia. Ewell is also remembered as the general who failed to drive Federal troops from the high ground of Cemetery Hill and Culp's Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg. Many historians believe that Ewell's inaction cost the Confederates a victory in this seminal battle and, ultimately, cost the Civil War. During his long military career, Ewell was never an aggressive warrior. He graduated from West Point and served in the Indian wars in Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Arizona. In 1861 he resigned his commission in the U.S. Army and rushed to the Confederate standard. Ewell saw action at First Manassas and took up divisional command under Jackson in the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and in the Seven Days' Battles around Richmond. A crippling wound and a leg amputation soon compounded the persistent manic-depressive disorder that had hindered his ability to make difficult decisions on the battlefield. When Lee reorganized the Army of Northern Virginia in May of 1863, Ewell was promoted to lieutenant general. At the same time he married a widowed first cousin who came to dominate his life - often to the disgust of his subordinate officers - and he became heavily influenced by the wave of religious fervor that was then sweeping through the Confederate Army. In Confederate General R.S. Ewell, Paul D. Casdorph offers a fresh portrait of a major - but deeply flawed - figure in the Confederate war effort, examining the pattern of hesitancy and indecisiveness that characterized Ewell's entire military career. This definitive biography probes the crucial question of why Lee selected such an obviously inconsistent and unreliable commander to lead one-third of his army on the eve of the Gettysburg Campaign. Casdorph describes Ewell's intriguing life and career with penetrating insights into his loyalty to the Confederate cause and the Virginia ties that kept him in Lee's favor for much of the war. Complete with riveting descriptions of key battles, Ewell's biography is essential reading for Civil War historians.

Описание: "The texts stitch past and present in a tapestry that in its warp and weft maps out the vastness of continental cultures."--Ileana Rodriguez, author of Liberalism at Its Limits: Crime and Terror in the Latin American Cultural Text "A first-rate, unique gathering of key texts and images from throughout Spanish America, ranging from pre-Hispanic myths and stories through some astounding Colonial personalities and speculations and to developments and fresh evaluations from our twenty-first century."--Gene H. Bell-Villada, coeditor of Writing Out of Limbo: International Childhoods, Global Nomads and Third Culture Kids

This landmark anthology brings together more than sixty myths, poems, memoirs, manifestos, and works of fiction translated from Spanish to English, some for the first time. It is an ambitious introduction to Spanish American thought and culture, featuring historiographies by mestizo intellectuals of the Colonial periods; thought-pieces by eighteenth-century Jesuits; personal accounts by indigenous authors, women in struggle, and labor activists; and excerpts from Reinaldo Arenas, the exiled gay Cuban poet, playwright, and novelist.

From disciplines including history, politics, anthropology, religion, literature, art, and architecture and written by famous historical figures such as Simon Bolivar, Jose Marti, and Che Guevara alongside lesser-known individuals, the texts are united by a shared quest for cultural identity. Representing many different moments in the complex history of an extraordinary region, the key question the texts in this volume confront is "Who are we?" The answers are often surprising.
