Описание:

Mystery and speculation have surrounded Sara Sullivan since she arrived in Philadelphia in 1783. She is young, beautiful, and wealthy. And although she introduces herself as Mrs. Sullivan, no one in Philadelphia has ever laid eyes on her husband. Also, none of them know there is a price on her head in her native Ireland and a powerful enemy in England. Eight years, a new name, and a large ocean offer some protection, but Sara must always look over her shoulder.

Soon after her arrival, Sara acquires a prosperous guest house for businessmen visiting the city. During the long, hot summer of 1787, delegates from the thirteen states gather in Philadelphia to make a new nation from the failing Articles of Confederation. Sara agrees to host two of them at Sullivan House. Even though her past has made her wary of men, Sara falls in love with John Oliver, a delegate from Connecticut. Each of them has a past they want to forget and reservations about loving again, but love is inescapable for both.

A short time after Olivers arrival, Hugh Marlow, a disagreeable delegate from South Carolina, comes to Sullivan House with two slaves in tow. Sara soon realizes that Marlow sexually abuses the young slave girl, Susannah.

Trouble ensues when Olivers valet, a free black man named Ned Foster, helps Susannah escape her bondage. Marlow is furious. He sends his slave hunters after Ned and Susannah who plan to escape to safety in Canada with the help of Oliver s Iroquois Confederation friends. Marlow vows revenge on Sara and John. He is determined to discover the secrets that brought her to Philadelphia.

Описание:

In 1917, Fort Ord was established in the tiny subdivision of Seaside, California. Over the course of the 20th century, it held great national and military importance—a major launching point for World War II operations, the first base in the military to undergo complete integration, the West Coast's most important training base for draftees in the Vietnam War, a site of important civil rights movements—until its closure in the 1990s. Alongside it, the city of Seaside took form. Racial Beachhead offers the story of this city, shaped over the decades by military policies of racial integration in the context of the ideals of the American civil rights movement.

Middle class blacks, together with other military families—black, white, Hispanic, and Asian—created a local politics of inclusion that continues to serve as a reminder that integration can work to change ideas about race. Though Seaside's relationship with the military makes it unique, at the same time the story of Seaside is part and parcel of the story of 20th century American town life. Its story contributes to the growing history of cities of color—those minority-majority places that are increasingly the face of urban America.

Описание: Our most widely respected environmental writer brings together the essential voices on global warming, from its 19th-century discovery to the present
With the rise of extreme weather events worldwide--witness the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Sandy, Irene, and Katrina, and the sustained drought across the American West--global warming has become increasingly difficult to deny.
What is happening to our planet? And what can we do about it? "The Global Warming Reader" provides more than thirty-five answers to these burning questions, from more than one hundred years of engagement with the topic. Here is Elizabeth Kolbert's groundbreaking essay "The Darkening Sea," Michael Crichton's skeptical view of climate change, George Monbiot's biting indictment of those who are really using up the planet's resources, NASA scientist James Hansen's testimony before the U.S. Congress, and clarion calls for action by Al Gore, Arundhati Roy, Naomi Klein, and many others. "The Global Warming Reader" is a comprehensive resource, expertly edited by someone who lives and breathes this defining issue of our time.

Описание: "Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy." Yeah, right. Sabbath-keeping seems quaint in our 24/7, twenty-first century world. Life often feels impossibly full, what with work, to-do lists, kid activities, chores, and errands. And laundry... always and forever laundry. But the Sabbath isn't just one of the ten commandments; it is a delight that can transform the other six days of the week. Join one family's quest to take Sabbath to heart and change their frenetic way of living by keeping a Sabbath day each week for one year. With lively and compelling prose, MaryAnn McKibben Dana documents their experiment with holy time as a guide for families of all shapes and sizes. Tips are included in each chapter to help make your own Sabbath experiment successful.
