Подзаголовок: The myths and realities of autonomous vehicles
Рейтинг:
Поставляется из: Англии
Описание: Autonomous vehicle (AV) technology represents a possible paradigm shift in our way of life. But complex challenges and obstacles impose a reality at odds with the utopian visions propounded by AV enthusiasts in the private and public sectors.

The new volume in the Urban Agenda series examines the technological questions still surrounding autonomous vehicles and the uncertain societal and legislative impact of widespread AV adoption. Assessing both short- and long-term concerns, the authors probe how autonomous vehicles might change transportation but also land use, energy consumption, mass transit, commuter habits, traffic safety, job markets, the freight industry, and supply chains. At the same time, the essays discuss opportunities for industry, researchers, and policymakers to make the autonomous future safer, more efficient, and more mobile.

Описание:

The number of bicyclists is increasing in the United States, especially among the working class and people of color. In contrast to the demographics of bicyclists in the United States, advocacy for bicycling has focused mainly on the interests of white upwardly mobile bicyclists, leading to neighborhood conflicts and accusations of racist planning.

In Bike Lanes Are White Lanes scholar Melody L. Hoffmann argues that the bicycle has varied cultural meaning as a “rolling signifier.” That is, the bicycle’s meaning changes in different spaces, with different people, and in different cultures. The rolling signification of the bicycle contributes to building community, influences gentrifying urban planning, and upholds systemic race and class barriers.

In this study of three prominent U.S. cities—Milwaukee, Portland, and Minneapolis—Hoffmann examines how the burgeoning popularity of urban bicycling is trailed by systemic issues of racism, classism, and displacement. From a pro-cycling perspective, Bike Lanes Are White Lanes highlights many problematic aspects of urban bicycling culture and its advocacy as well as positive examples of people trying earnestly to bring their community together through bicycling.

Описание: Detroit is the first city of its size to become bankrupt and some policy makers have argued that, since then, it has entered a ‘new beginning’. This book critically examines the evidence for and against this claim.Joe T. Darden analyzes whether Detroit’s patterns of race and class neighborhood inequality have persisted or whether investments have led to improvements in academic achievement, homeownership, employment, and reductions in poverty and violent crime. He measures, quantitatively, the benefits and disadvantages of staying in urban Detroit or moving to the suburbs, and provides evidence to answer whether Detroit, after bankruptcy, is becoming an inclusive city.

Описание:

There Is Confusion (1924) is a novel by Jessie Redmon Fauset. Published to resounding acclaim from such critics as Alain Locke and Montgomery Gregory, There Is Confusion was largely forgotten by the 1930s as the Great Depression and the Second World War shifted national attention away from the writers and artists whose vision defined the Harlem Renaissance. Rediscovered by scholars in the late twentieth century, There Is Confusion is seen as a feminist masterpiece on par with the best of Jane Austen and Edith Wharton. Set in Philadelphia and Harlem, Fauset's novel traces the lives of three African Americans from childhood to adulthood while situating their experience in the cultural shifts of the early twentieth century. Joanna Marshall is a dancer who longs for recognition. Maggie Ellersley is a beautiful girl who detests her working-class roots. Peter Bye is an ambitious student who hopes to become a surgeon. As they grow up together, their shared dreams are tarnished by romance and competition. As economic opportunity reshapes the African American community, the three friends must redefine their relationships and desires. Moving and plainspoken, There Is Confusion is a novel grounded in history that manages a delicate balance between the personal and the political without losing sight of the characters who live Fauset's vision. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Jessie Redmon Fauset's There Is Confusion is a classic of African American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Описание: A silent cultural revolution is reshaping how we will work for generations to come--and its being led by Uber. The once small Silicon Valley start up has become a juggernaut of the sharing economy, luring drivers with the promise of becoming entrepreneurs but treating them like consumers--and upending labor laws and society expectations simultaneously.

Technology ethnographer Alex Rosenblat shares her award-winning research on how algorithmic managers shape how drivers behave, treating them as consumers rather than employees. With the help of this technology, Uber claims to operate in a world of consumption rather than labor, skirting a series of obligations and laws, manipulating wages, and misleading the public. By using algorithms and rhetoric to blur the line between workers and consumer, Uber exemplifies the ways in which technology can rewrite rules of law and society.

Based on Rosenblat's first hand experience of riding 5,000 miles with Uber drivers, daily visits to online forums from 2014-2018, and face-to-face discussions with Uber senior executives, Uberland goes beyond the question of labor history and law by highlighting how Uber changes various aspects of our lives, be it family life or childcare arrangements, worker conditions or management practices, commuting patterns or urban planning, or racial equality campaigns and labor rights initiatives. With a critical eye towards unveiling the truth, Uberland provides a rare window into the profound social and cultural shifts taking place in a society mediated by technology.

Описание: I would like to clarify who I am. I have made many mistakes during my lifetime. I have not become a perfect person since following Jesus, but I have become a student of God's Word, and a son of the living God because of what Jesus did. I have the desire and vision to become more like Jesus, always wanting to be as loving and kind as He. No one has completely become as Jesus is in this world. We are all on the journey seeking to live His perfection. I know I am in a war, the spiritual war that is talked about in Ephesians 6:12. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

The Lord has helped me through battles of hate, lust, lying, stealing, cheating, deceit, and drugs. His love has never failed me. He stands with me no matter what. I can joyfully say that He has given me the Grace to overcome many sins. Somehow, He has seen fit to use me to share the Gospel with many. Some days I shared the Gospel with 6 or more people other days I did not share Him. If I took a rough estimate I believe it would average to 2 a day for the 48 years I have been serving Him it would come to 35,040 people and multiplied by an average of 6 brothers and sisters sharing with me this number could be multiplied by 6. These are people who we share the Gospel with face to face. The reason I am sharing this is not to boast but to bring to your attention that if we are faithful to share the Gospel our influence for the Kingdom of God adds up. If we train others to share the Gospel our influence in this world multiplies. He is faithful to use our lives, even if we are not perfect. He's perfect and that's what counts.

I acknowledge that Jesus Created the world with His Father. He came to be the Savior of the world and is the King of Kings. He has all authority in heaven and on earth. I need Him. I have submitted to His Lordship over my life. I understand that eternal life the entrance into Heaven is a free gift. When Jesus died on the cross, He removed all sin. Every human being has a choice to believe in what He has done and allow Him to take away their sins or not believe and stand before God at judgement without the cleansing blood of Jesus the Christ. It's a choice. It's your choice.

When someone becomes a believer, they need constant cleansing from defilement contracted in this pilgrim walk through this fallen world. Titus 3:5 tells us; not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Spirit. We all need this washing of our souls and renewing of the Holy Spirit daily to keep an open connection with God through His Holy Spirit. Heaven is a non-returnable gift when someone truly receives Jesus as their Savior. The Holy Spirit's cleansing allows us to live in a pleasing way in our Fathers eyes while we walk in this world. It also allows us to be used on earth to lift His Glory because other can see Him in us. His Holy Spirit is able to shine through us.

From the beginning of the world, mankind was unable to understand what God wanted with His creation, so, Jesus came to earth in a human form. Jesus was totally God and totally man when he walked this earth. He showed us how God wants humans to live then made a way for us to walk with God on earth by taking all sins on the cross fulfilling the prophecy of Psalms 22, which had been written about 1000 years prior to His death. He offers to take anyone's sins, but He has given every human being the choice to humble ourselves and ask Jesus to take our sins.

Something for you to think about. If someone is not happily loving Jesus here on earth, they will not be happy living with Him for eternity. God doesn't send anyone to Hell, going to Hell is a choice. This is chosen by receiving or rejecting God's gift given through Jesus.

Описание:

Explores the daily, lived effects of gentrification for neighborhood residents
Williamsburg, Brooklyn, a prominent neighborhood in New York City, has undergone significant transformations through cycles of divestment and gentrification. In 2005, the city’s decision to rezone the Williamsburg waterfront for high-rise housing led to a profound alteration of the physical, cultural, and social landscape. The result was the rapid influx of thousands of new residents, many of them wealthy, giving rise to luxury buildings, upscale dining, and high-end retail stores alongside new norms and expectations for the neighborhood. These new arrivals coexist with earlier gentrifiers as well as working-class Latinx and white ethnic populations, creating a complex and layered community.
In There Was Nothing There, Sara Martucci draws on four decades of residents’ memories and experiences, providing insights into the tensions, contradictions, and inequalities brought about by gentrification. Martucci focuses on the individual level, exploring how residents form connections to their neighborhoods and how these attachments shape their daily experiences of public spaces, local consumption, and evaluations of safety. As established residents, bohemians, and newcomers vie for ownership and belonging, their perceptions give rise to conflicting narratives that define the essence of the neighborhood.
While the book’s primary focus is Williamsburg, it serves as a cautionary tale about the broader impact of state-led gentrification, extending far beyond Brooklyn. The text underscores the potential consequences of such transformations for the future of cities, urging readers to consider the implications of cultural displacement, homogenization, and increased surveillance as gentrification permeates urban landscapes.
