Описание: The Hole Story introduces in its title the concept of a word having more than one meaning. While many children may immediately think of a hole as an empty space, this story helps them explore the purpose of these empty spaces, giving them purpose and meaning. From providing a home for wild animals, to learning about the many places and purposes we can find for a hole in our clothing, this book allows children to learn about spatial concepts and wordplay through brief and easy to read text and beautifully illustrated examples.

This book is suitable for early elementary aged readers.

Описание: This book is an ethnographic account of San Francisco’s most inner city neighborhood, the Tenderloin. Using its streets as campus and its people as teachers, Stannard-Friel uses storytelling as a way of explaining why inner city social problems, such as homelessness, drugs, prostitution, untreated mental illness, and death of young people by murders and suicides, exist and persist there. The work delves into who lives in the Tenderloin and why, the role of dedicated service providers in meeting people’s needs and encouraging social change, and what lessons university students, many coming from their own challenging backgrounds, learn through community engagement and service learning that encourage understanding, compassion, and meaningful contributions to society. The work also explores how life in the area is changing, and why so many youth report that they “love living in the Tenderloin.”

Undressed Toronto: From the Swimming Hole to Sunnyside, How a City Learned to Love the Beach, 1850-1935

Описание: Undressed Toronto looks at the life of the swimming hole and considers how Toronto turned boys skinny dipping into comforting anti-modernist folk figures. By digging into the vibrant social life of these spaces, Barbour challenges narratives that pollution and industrialization in the nineteenth century destroyed the relationship between Torontonians and their rivers and waterfront. Instead, we find that these areas were co-opted and transformed into recreation spaces: often with the acceptance of indulgent city officials. While we take the beach for granted today, it was a novel form of public space in the nineteenth century and Torontonians had to decide how it would work in their city. To create a public beach, bathing needed to be transformed from the predominantly nude male privilege that it had been in the mid-nineteenth century into an activity that women and men could participate in together. That transformation required negotiating and establishing rules for how people would dress and behave when they bathed and setting aside or creating distinct environments for bathing.Undressed Toronto challenges assumptions about class, the urban environment, and the presentation of the naked body. It explores anxieties about modernity and masculinity and the weight of nostalgia in public perceptions and municipal regulation of public bathing in five Toronto environments that showcase distinct moments in the transition from vernacular bathing to the public beach: the city’s central waterfront, Toronto Island, the Don River, the Humber River, and Sunnyside Beach on Toronto’s western shoreline.

Описание: This book explores the nature of political correctness as but one of the faces of today`s widespread sociocultural hypocrisy, and symptomatic of a drive towards shallowness, anti-intellectualism and self-flagellation, as part of a political culture in which perception is everything and the possibility of honest, rational debate is eroded.

Описание: Set in a remote community on a majestic and rugged island in Southeast Alaska, Rogan Chaffey and his family are thrust into a heartbreaking situation when the family's eldest son, Rogan's older brother, is diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Fast forward a few years, and Rogan is a young man who loves adventure, loves his family, and tries to live how God wants him to live, all the while wrestling with the universal question of why God let this terrible thing happen when He is supposed to be a good and loving God. Rogan feels a need to step in and fill his brother's place, putting immense pressure on himself, like taking responsibility for his two younger sisters, keeping them safe when they encounter an angry bear at Thunder Falls.

Everyday life in Alaska is an adventure and is experienced by the reader. Routine life in the Chaffey house on the frontier is anything but usual. Travel is often by boat, trips to the grocery store take them to thick forests, swirling ocean currents, or wild huckleberry hillsides. For a youth beginning his ninth-grade school year, life is truly a daily adventure. He must also learn to deal with a bully, Nico Vega.

Rogan and his humorous best friend, nicknamed Runt, share many adventures that strengthen character and hone leadership and integrity while they struggle with greater questions about life and family. A deer hunting trip is successful but fraught with challenges, as well as danger from Crazy Hoffman, a reclusive neighbor. Mr. Chaffey takes Rogan and Runt out on the ocean to halibut fish. On the way, they make a stop at Cemetery Island to explore. Going home, the motor breaks down, putting them in danger from the elements and wildlife. Rogan and his group of close friends have fun adventures on their camping trip to Half Moon Beach. They discuss the legendary Dead Man's Hole, which perilously takes them to a location of danger and possible disaster.

There is a local legend of a young man who attempted to jump Dead Man's Hole with fatal results. The town's youth, however, aren't sure if it is a myth or an actual event until Rogan is confronted with the answer in an up-close and personal way.

Join Rogan and his friends as they live and survive in the Alaskan wilderness.

Описание:

This volume brings together an unusual collection of British captivity writings - composed during and after imprisonment and in conditions of siege. Writings from the 'Mutiny' of 1857 are well known, but there exists a vast body of texts, from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Burma, and the Indian subcontinent, that have rarely been compiled or examined.

Written in anxiety and distress, or recalled with poignancy and anger, these siege narratives depict a very different Briton. A far cry from the triumphant conqueror, explorer or ruler, these texts give us the vulnerable, injured and frightened Englishman and woman who seek, in the most adverse of conditions, to retain a measure of stoicism and identity. From Robert Knox's 17th-century account of imprisonment in Sri Lanka, through J. Z. Holwell's famous account of the 'Black Hole' of Calcutta, through Florentia Sale's Afghan memoir, and Lady Inglis's 'Mutiny' diary from Lucknow, the book opens up a dark and revealing corner of the colonial archive.

Lucid and intriguing, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern South Asia, colonial history, literary and culture studies.

Описание: For the past several years, critics have been describing the present era as both ""the end of television"" and one of ""peak TV,"" referring to the unprecedented quality and volume and the waning of old technologies, formats, and habits. Television's projections and reflections have significantly contributed to who we are individually and culturally. From Rabbit Ears to the Rabbit Hole: A Life with Television reveals the reflections of a TV scholar and fan analyzing how her life as a consumer of television has intersected with the cultural and technological evolution of the medium itself. In a narrative bridging television studies, memoir, and comic, literary nonfiction, Kathleen Collins takes readers alongside her from the 1960s through to the present, reminiscing and commiserating about some of what has transpired over the last five decades in the US, in media culture, and in what constitutes a shared cultural history. In a personal, critical, and entertaining meditation on her relationship with TV-as avid consumer and critic-she considers the concept and institution of TV as well as reminiscing about beloved, derided, or completely forgotten content. She describes the shifting role of TV in her life, in a progression that is far from unique, but rather representative of a largely collective experience. It affords a parallel coming of age, that of the author and her coprotagonist, television. By turns playful and serious, wry and poignant, it is a testament to the profound and positive effect TV can have on a life and, by extrapolation, on the culture.
