Be ready for a deep dive into a neighborhood filled with an amazing mix of persons, all given equal standing and respect, whether rich or poor, normal or disturbed, intelligent or challenged.
The setting is Cordelia Street in West Tampa, Florida in the 1940s. The Florida Crackers work and drink hard, are poor but poverty stricken. Down the street are the Cubans, with a culture of gambling, easy money, and cigar-smoking Mafioso. Always the cigars.
Carolyn's the child of a Florida Cracker mother and a Cuban Mafia father. The drama of this marriage and its shattering dissolution plays out in the warp and weft of the neighborhood. What emerges is a beautiful tapestry of triumph and gratitude.
A clinical psychologist for over forty years, Carolyn Mendez Shertzer, Ph.D, knows firsthand the impact of sexual abuse, neglect, and poverty. Read this book if you want a deeper understanding of the plight of a child caught in such a web. Simple, human connections can make a crucial, life-saving difference. Every page brings the reader closer to knowing what it's like to be a heroine or a hero to an abused child. Make no mistake: there's a Carolyn in your neighborhood.

A Great Sacrifice is an in-depth analysis of the effects of the Civil War on northern black families carried out using letters from northern black women—mothers, wives, sisters, and female family friends—addressed to a number of Union military officials. Collectively, the letters give a voice to the black family members left on the northern homefront. Through their explanations and requests, readers obtain a greater apprehension of the struggles African American families faced during the war, and their conditions as the war progressed. The original letters that were received by government agencies, as well as many of the copies of the letters sent in response, are held by the National Archives in Washington, D.C. This study is unique because it examines the effects of the war specifically on northern black families. Most other studies on African Americans during the Civil War focused almost exclusively on the soldiers.

Описание: Biofuels and Rural Poverty makes a unique contribution to the current controversial global debate on biofuels, in particular the consequences that large-scale production of transport fuel substitutes can have on rural areas. Three key concerns are examined from a North-South perspective: ecological issues, pro-poor policies and equity of benefits within the global value chain.

Описание: The kind of novel you never knew you were waiting for. --Marlon JamesAn essential and revelatory coming-of-age narrative from a thrilling new voice, Rainbow Milk follows nineteen-year-old Jesse McCarthy as he grapples with his racial and sexual identities against the backdrop of his Jehovah's Witness upbringing. In the 1950s, ex-boxer Norman Alonso is a determined and humble Jamaican who has immigrated to Britain with his wife and children to secure a brighter future. Blighted with unexpected illness and racism, Norman and his family are resilient, but are all too aware that their family will need more than just hope to survive in their new country. At the turn of the millennium, Jesse seeks a fresh start in London, escaping a broken immediate family, a repressive religious community, and his depressed home city in the Black Country. But once he arrives he finds himself at a loss for a new center of gravity, and turns to sex work, music, and art to create his own notions of love, fatherhood, and spirituality.
Rainbow Milk is a bold reckoning with race, class, sexuality, freedom, and religion across generations, time, and cultures. It's a novel tender with dislocation and loss, as well as the visceral discoveries of pleasure, joy, and creative fulfillment, and Paul Mendez is a fervent new writer with an original and urgent perspective.
