When Venice conquered Crete in the early thirteenth century, a significant population of Jews lived in the capital and main port city of Candia. This community grew, diversified, and flourished both culturally and economically throughout the period of Venetian rule, and although it adhered to traditional Jewish ways of life, the community also readily engaged with the broader population and the island's Venetian colonial government. In Colonial Justice and the Jews of Venetian Crete, Rena N. Lauer tells the story of this unusual and little-known community through the lens of its flexible use of the legal systems at its disposal. Grounding the book in richly detailed studies of individuals and judicial cases—concerning matters as prosaic as taxation and as dramatic as bigamy and murder—Lauer brings the Jews of Candia vibrantly to life. Despite general rabbinic disapproval of such behavior elsewhere in medieval Europe, Crete's Jews regularly turned not only to their own religious courts but also to the secular Venetian judicial system. There they aired disputes between family members, business partners, spouses, and even the leaders of their community. And with their use of secular justice as both symptom and cause, Lauer contends, Crete's Jews grew more open and flexible, confident in their identity and experiencing little of the anti-Judaism increasingly suffered by their coreligionists in Western Europe.
This thesis concerns music educators' pathways from early-life musical-training contexts, through a Graduate Diploma course at a College of Advanced Education, and into practice as music educators; these three key periods also shaped the data analysis.
The methodology employed was life-story research, and methods of data collection comprised interviews of nineteen informants and document study. The conceptual framework combined the notion of contextualising music education pathways as social-learning experiences with Bourdieuian perspective on practices to explore the fields traversed.
From analysis of the accounts of the informant's life stories it was found that multiple social-learning experiences across musician and teaching settings provided the practices from which they could reify and construct their professional identity as classroom teachers or instrumental music teachers.

The middle of the 20 Century was a time of turmoil. The Cold War was underway and Mr. McCarthy, chairman of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, was weeding out those whose patriotism was questionable.
At any moment Russia could drop an atomic bomb on Stockton, the only inland seaport in California. Therefore at the College of the Pacific, students were versed in survival procedures -- "go rapidly to the levee and jump into the water" (girls on one side and boys on the other.)
This was an example of a culture moving into the Atomic Age.
Meanwhile at Mu Zeta Rho, Mrs. Dillingham was taking seriously her responsibility to lead her girls into adulthoods that conformed to her Victorian ideals. We were constantly subjected to the manners of that era. "We never pick up our forks before our hostess does". "At the table we only talk about topics that concern everyone."
Sororities hosted "teas", at which the attendees practiced "vital" behaviors such as how to pour the beverage into the cup and how to hostess conversations.
But out of sight of our mentor, the adolescent behavior prevailed. In the privacy of our upstairs quarters, Mrs. Dillingham's girls reverted to normalcy. We gossiped, we argued, we strummed ukuleles, we told raunchy jokes, and in the September heat we stripped to nothing and tap danced to the rhythm of "Eastside, Westside." Interaction with boys was a major topic of conversation. We learned to say "You better have fun there because that's all the farther you're going." We discussed who was cute and who had other redeeming qualities. But we learned how to perform the necessary rituals when 'young men' came to call. "Mrs. Dillingham, May I present Bob Young." And our 'suiters' responded in the Victorian manner.
Maintaining the rituals of the religions into which we had been baptized was a major responsibility of Mrs. Dillingham. In my case she was delighted that we were both Episcopalians. This necessitated attendance at 7:00 AM on Wednesdays. At that hour maintaining favor with God was not a priority in my life. Maturity eventually surfaced. I became a teacher and contact with the real world led me to understand what behavior is essential to make my share of society run smoothly. I do treasure these years of 'coming of age'. And I note that my children and their children have also experienced their own brand of "Maturation Rites."
About the Author
Estelle Gibson Lauer lives with her husband Ron in a retirement community in El Cajon, California, a suburb of San Diego. Their family grew to include five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Estelle developed a penchant for writing and has produced several books. The Story of Adam and Eve and The Story of Noah and the Ark are geared to children's views of the tales. The texts' opposing blank pages invite the young readers to draw their interpretation of the stories. A Century of Gibson is a family history that spans five generations of settlers who claimed land in the prairie states--- Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
A recent publication is Kanaga Diary: Lost in the Aleutians 1938. It's an account of an expedition to chart the weather and terrain of that isolated island. War with Japan was brewing and it might have been feasible to invade the enemy through that route. Royse Gibson, the medic, and the cook went hunting one day and never returned. The story traces the ensuing life of his widow and children.

Описание:
It was the winter of 1937-'38. World War II was brewing. At a remote duty station on Kanaga Island, Alaska, in the middle of the Aleutian chain, eight men were engaged in a U. S. Navy mission whose aim was secret even from them.
The medic, Chief Pharmacist's Mate Royse Gibson, had little to do -- no one in the small contingent got sick, no one was injured. There wouldn't be a mail boat for months. So Gibson kept a diary in the form of letters to his wife and two young daughters at home, to be mailed if ever it was possible. He wrote of his daily routine, and his far more interesting spare-time activities on the island.
Then one day Gibson and the cook went seal hunting, and disappeared without a trace.
Gibson's letters home, finally delivered to his family months later, comprise half of Kanaga Diary. The other half of this "double memoir" is his daughter Estelle's story of the family, struggling, eventually moving on, but keeping his memory alive. In 1995 Estelle and her husband set out for Kanaga on a pilgrimage to investigate her father's disappearance and to finally say goodbye.
The book is illustrated with photos, maps, and ephemera of the times, both long past and recent, on Kanaga Island. The story of the secret U. S. Navy aerological station on Kanaga is one that's new and surprising even to those familiar with the history of World War II in the Aleutian Islands. Though it began eight decades ago, the story of the family at home and uncertain will resonate with military families even today.
