Описание:

Points in Time is a Christian novel about a lifelong friendship between two boys in the deep south who meet in their first year of elementary school. Their young friendship is cut short by the departure of one, but rekindled years later by his return. The two are compatible in many ways yet distinctly different in fundamental ways. Their story is defined by each individually being drawn to an early and strong pull of faith in God and events that transpire as their story continues. Book one and the first few chapters of Book two provide interesting, funny, informative and socially pertinent insights into growing up in the south during the nineteen-fifties and early nineteen-sixties. This is a cautionary tale; a story of faith, truth and what might have been. After a certain traumatic event, all future events take on more meaning considering the dualistic results of that event. These Points in Time relate the happenings and pivot points of their lives. However, once it appears to be the end, there remains a third possibility that could change everything. The format of this novel is anomalous and integral to the telling of the story and includes short essay elements. The story has mystical elements and speaks to ages old yet current cultural and faith-based divisions in our civilization. The intent is to draw the reader into the lives of the characters by appealing to their nostalgia, sympathies, emotions, opinions and to provoke thought and analysis of what is being related. It is about life and death and the sanctity of life from the moment of conception.

Описание: Heidegger, Marcuse, and Ellul warned against the rise of a technological mass culture. Philosophy of technology has since turned away from such dystopic views, promoting instead the view that we shape technologies just as technologies shape us. Yet the rise of Big Data has exceeded our worst fears about Big Brother, leading us to again question whether technologies are empowering us or enslaving us. Rather than engage in endless debates about whether technologies are making us better or making us worse, Nolen Gertz investigates what we think "better" and "worse" mean, and what role this thinking has played in the creation of our technological world. This investigation is carried out by using Nietzsche's philosophy of nihilism in order to explore the ways in which our values mediate how we design technologies and how we use technologies. Examining our technological practices--practices ranging from Netflix and Chill to Fitbit and Move to Twitter and Rage--reveals how our nihilism and our technologies have become intertwined, creating a world of techno-hypnosis, data-driven activity, pleasure economics, herd networking, and orgies of clicking.

Описание: Winner, J. B. Jackson Book Prize from the Foundation for Landscape StudiesIn this insightful biography, Bruce Stephenson analyzes the details of John Nolen's experiments, illuminating the planning principles he used in laying out communities from Mariemont, Ohio, to Venice, Florida. Stephenson's conclusion discusses the potential of Nolen's work as a model of a sustainable vision relevant to American civic culture today.John Nolen (1869-1937) studied economics, philosophy, and public administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where his keen intelligence and remarkable administrative abilities were immediately recognized. In 1903, at the age of thirty-four, Nolen enrolled in the new Harvard University program in landscape architecture, studying under Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. and Arthur Shurcliff. Two years later, Nolen opened his office in Harvard Square.Over the course of his career, Nolen and his firm completed more than 400 projects, including comprehensive plans for twenty-nine cities and twenty-seven new towns, all of them in the United States. Like other reformers of the Progressive Era, Nolen looked to Europe for models to structure the rapid urbanization defining modern life into more efficient and livable form. Nolen's mutually influential relationship with Raymond Unwin, England's preeminent garden city planner, typified the "Atlantic Crossings" that produced a host of intensely interesting planning experiments in England, Europe, and the United States during the first decades of the twentieth century. "Nolen has never received the systematic assessment that he deserves despite being the subject of so much writing--the Stephenson biography stands alone. The author makes a convincing case that Nolen was a pivotal figure in the profession of city planning and that his contributions were uniquely situated to bridge the fields of landscape architecture and planning. This is an exceptionally fine work."Christopher Silver, author of Planning the Megacity: Jakarta in the Twentieth Century"The long overdue and definitive biography of one of America's most prominent and influential urbanists. . . . Stephenson effectively positions Nolen between the classical practitioners of the nineteenth century and the modern ecological focus of the twentieth century (which he helped to establish)."Keith N. Morgan, coauthor of Community by Design: The Olmsted Office and the Development of Brookline, MassachusettsIn this deeply researched and richly detailed biography . . . Stephenson focuses attention on a figure who has been curiously understudied and who arguably deserves additional scrutiny on several topics―from his ideas about race and class to his proto-environmentalism, all key interests among Progressive reformers.Journal of Southern HistoryStephenson offers a richly developed biographical portrait of Nolen interwoven with a detailed discussion of his numerous planning projects. . . . [The] biographical component allows the reader to see how Nolen's life experiences shaped his professional work. Especially impressive is Stephenson's discussion of Nolen as a progressive during his work at ASEUT and his early travels to Europe. . . . The numerous color photographs make the book a visual delight and the excellent index makes referencing the book a breeze.Journal of Planning History

Описание: "A poignant and hopeful glimpse at the past for today's curious readers." --Rita Williams-Garcia, Newbery Honor author

From the award-winning author of Eliza's Freedom Road comes the powerful tale of a slave girl's triumphant journey to freedom with her family during the Civil War.

Twelve-year-old Callie Wilcomb and her family are enslaved, and the Civil War gives them hope that freedom may be on the horizon. On May 23, 1861, the State of Virginia ratified their vote to secede from the Union. In Virginia, a window was opened where the laws of the land no longer applied. Because of the Contraband Law, enslaved people no longer had to be returned to their owners, granting them a measure of protection and safety.

With the possibility of Callie and her family escaping their bonds forever, Callie is eager to learn and become educated and hopes to teach others one day. Through hardship and loss--with love and strong family ties--Callie proves that freedom is in her stars.
