""Ka-ma,"" one of the four goals of Hindu life, means sensual or sexual pleasure. ""Su-tra"" means a thread or line that holds things together; metaphorically, an aphorism or a collection of aphorisms in the form of a manual. Thus, the Kama Sutra is literally a manual of sexual pleasure, but also a discussion of virtuous and gracious living, and of love.
This ancient Indian Hindu text is the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature. It was composed between 2,400 and 1"

Описание: The Kamasutra is the oldest extant textbook of erotic love. But it is more than a book about sex. It is about the art of living--about finding a partner, maintaining power in a marriage, committing adultery, living as or with a courtesan, using drugs--and also, of course, about the many and varied positions available to lovers in sexual intercourse and the pleasures to be derived from each. The Kamasutra was composed in Sanskrit, the literary language of ancient India, sometime in the third century, probably in North India. It combines an encyclopedic coverage of all imaginable aspects of sex with a closely observed sexual psychology and a dramatic, novelistic narrative of seduction, consummation, and disentanglement. Best known in English through the highly mannered, padded, and inaccurate nineteenth-century translation by Sir Richard Burton, the text is newly translated here into clear, vivid, sexually frank English. This edition also includes a section of vivid Indian color illustrations along with three uniquely important commentaries: translated excerpts from the earliest and most famous Sanskrit commentary (thirteenth century) and from a twentieth-century Hindi commentary, and explanatory notes by the two translators. The lively and entertaining introduction by translator Wendy Doniger, one of the world's foremost Sanskrit scholars, discusses the history of The Kamasutra and its reception in India and Europe, analyses its attitudes toward gender and sexual violence, and sets it in the context of ancient Indian social theory, scientific method, and sexual ethics. [This] new translation is fascinating, thought-provoking and occasionally even amusing.--Salon.comAbout the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Описание: The complete Kama Sutra by Mallanaga Vatsyayana (translated by Sir Richard Burton) with fully illustrated Kama Sutra Sex Positions and an introduction from evolutionary sexologist Karene Howie. Written in India (100AD 600AD), the Kama Sutra is ultimately about wisdom and our creative cultivation as a complete individual with healthy, intimate relationships with others. It covers the three aims of life, virtue (dharma), prosperity (artha), and love (kama). The Kama Sutra is a philosophical work that discusses sexuality and its cultivation openly and honestly. It is not significantly influenced by western Christian morals that dominate western attitudes on sex. The Kama Sutra sex positions are the most famous part of the book. This edition is beautifully illustrated with 25 full page pictures of all the Kama Sutra Sex positions (useful, sexually explicit, captivating and erotic). Kama is further defined as; "... the enjoyment of appropriate objects by the five senses of hearing, feeling, seeing, tasting and smelling, assisted by the mind together with the soul. The ingredient in this is a peculiar contact between the organ of sense and its object, and the consciousness of pleasure which arises from that contact is called Kama. ... Kama is to be learnt from the Kama Sutra (aphorisms on love) and from the practice of citizens." (Kamasutra, 1883) The 64 Arts of Kama Sutra are skills that should be cultivated by both men and women to create a beautiful environment. Some arts include singing, playing on musical instruments, dancing, writing, drawing, culinary art, practice with sword, bow and arrow, drawing inferences and reasoning, architecture, art of applying perfumed ointments, dressing hair etc. This is a beautiful book - beautifully illustrated - rich in detail - a must read for any person serious about their sexuality and its creative cultivation to enhance their sexual relationships.

The Kama Sutra (Sanskrit: कामसूत्र) is an ancient Indian Sanskrit text on sexuality, eroticism and emotional fulfillment in life. Attributed to Vātsyāyana, the Kama Sutra is neither exclusively nor predominantly a sex manual on sex positions, but written as a guide to the art of living well, the nature of love, finding a life partner, maintaining one's love life, and other aspects pertaining to pleasure-oriented faculties of human life. It is a sutra-genre text with terse aphoristic verses that have survived into the modern era with different bhasya (exposition and commentaries).
The text is a mix of prose and anustubh-meter poetry verses. The text acknowledges the Hindu concept of Purusharthas, and lists desire, sexuality, and emotional fulfillment as one of the proper goals of life. Its chapters discuss methods for courtship, training in the arts to be socially engaging, finding a partner, flirting, maintaining power in a married life, when and how to commit adultery, sexual positions, and other topics. The majority of the book is about the philosophy and theory of love, what triggers desire, what sustains it, and how and when it is good or bad.
The text is one of many Indian texts on Kama Shastra. It is a much-translated work in Indian and non-Indian languages. The Kamasutra has influenced many secondary texts that followed after the 4th-century CE, as well as the Indian arts as exemplified by the pervasive presence Kama-related reliefs and sculpture in old Hindu temples. Of these, the Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh is a UNESCO world heritage site. Among the surviving temples in north India, one in Rajasthan sculpts all the major chapters and sexual positions to illustrate the Kamasutra. According to Wendy Doniger, the Kamasutra became "one of the most pirated books in English language" soon after it was published in 1883 by Richard Burton.
This first European edition by Burton does not faithfully reflect much in the Kamasutra because he revised the collaborative translation by Bhagavanlal Indrajit and Shivaram Parashuram Bhide with Forster Arbuthnot to suit 19th-century Victorian tastes.
