The Impact of Classroom Practices: Teacher Educators` Reflections on Culturally Relevant Teachers

Описание:

Debates regarding the qualities, skills, and dispositions of culturally relevant teachers and teaching have raged in teacher education for several decades. Ladson-Billings' (2009) The Dreamkeepers: Successful Teachers of African American Children was a groundbreaking work that has become a foundational study that informs the work of culturally-relevant (Ladson-Billings, 2009) and culturally-sustaining (Paris & Alim, 2017) teaching. In her book The Dreamkeepers she describes effective teachers who are able to draw from the cultural wealth, knowledges, and heritage of Black communities. The Dreamkeepers ensured that their Black students were academically successful, retained, and grew both in terms of their cultural competence and their sociopolitical awareness. In other words, according to research by Ladson-Billings (2009), effective teachers possessed both pedagogical and relational dispositions, which leave lifelong impacts on the academic and social lives of the students they teach. While being a foundational text, what remains missing from the research on culturally-relevant and even culturally-sustaining teachers are "narratives" (read: stories, testimonios, etc.) related to how the race of particular E-12 teachers positively impact the lives of their students.

For instance, Dr. Antonio Ellis (the first editor of the proposed book) describes his high school music teacher Mr. Linard McCloud) as "a highly effective African American music educator who changed the course of his life" (p. 170). Ellis (2016) describes McCloud as being loving, caring, creative, culturally sensitive, attuned, hopeful, flexible, organized, and thoughtful. Because Mr. McCloud possessed the aforementioned characteristics and dispositions, Ellis contends that he was motivated to achieve academically and socially in his urban high school. In addition, according to Ellis (2016), Mr. McCloud was a highly impactful educator because he went beyond the call of duty as a teacher-a practice that is not so common in schools, particularly urban ones. Not only did McCloud teach in the classroom setting, but he also built strong relationships with families, community members, and external stakeholders including local businesses, colleges, and universities. Mr. McCloud used these networks to leverage opportunities for his students academically, personally, and professionally. Like many of his high school classmates, Ellis (2016) contends that he would not have graduated from high school if it were not for the care and mentorship he received from Mr. McCloud. In this proposed edited volume, it is the editors' goal to honor teachers like Mr. McCloud who have made a difference in the lives of their students by learning from their impactful practices.

Employing a "critical storytelling" methodology (see Hartlep & Hensley, 2015; Hartlep, Hensley, Braniger, & Jennings, 2017), each chapter contributor will use his or her own narrative to show the power of influential teachers in classrooms. While this framework centers race, lived and learned experiences, the storyteller is the most important unit of narrative; hence, The Impact of Classroom Practices: Reflections on Culturally Relevant Teachers will include African-American storytellers who reflect on the impact of classroom practices of teachers from diverse backgrounds who they deemed culturally relevant and responsive to both their academic and social needs. This work will offer recommendations to pre-service teachers and in-service teachers who desire to leave a lasting impact on the students they teach.

Understanding the Impact of INSET on Teacher Change in China

Описание: This pivot considers the impact of INSET courses on EFL teachers practicing under the national curriculum reform in China. Providing context-specific findings on the policy and implementation of INSET as well as its impact on teacher education initiatives in both China and similar contexts, it explores the limitations of one off training events such as INSET and the inconsistency between teacher learning results and their classroom practices. The book argues that teachers, when returning to pre-INSET teaching, are influenced by their prior deeply-rooted beliefs largely considered more powerful than newly-learnt theories. Addressing the rarely discussed fact that the complex and dynamic characteristics of teacher learning change over time and support the construct of teacher learning as a social event rather than a one-off event, the book also offers practical solutions on how to improve teacher education and enhance the long-term INSET impact on teacher development, with the ambition of promoting education reform for both teachers and students alike.

Silicon Valley is recognized globally as a hotbed of innovation and entrepreneurship.
It's the birthplace of world-famous companies like Apple, Google, and Facebook
and home to a few legends such as NASA at the Ames Research Center. Our 16 authors have created 16 high-impact chapters that can give you and your business the Silicon Valley advantage.

Why is Silicon Valley such an entrepreneurial place? A major contributor to the phenomenon is our diversity--half of us don't speak English at home. But our diversity goes far beyond ethnicity. A wide variety of perspectives, thinking styles, and work approaches also contributes to the magic of Silicon Valley, creating breakthroughs that have disrupted business models (Airbnb and Lyft) and even shifted our perception of the future of meat
(the "Impossible Burger").

We're also one of the most educated regions in the US--nearly half of us graduated
college, and about a fifth have earned graduate degrees. Businesses here
are filled with smart, well-educated, experienced people. But like all organizations
made up of human beings, we are subject to the same pitfalls that threaten companies
everywhere.

Many businesses that were successful 100 years ago no longer exist. Trapped by
their own success, they gradually learned to reduce risk and avoid failure at all
costs and consequently squelched or killed innovation and creativity. This made
them vulnerable to competition from new or more aggressive companies with less
to lose. Are your greatest contributions and successes behind you or ahead of you?
Even brilliant people can underperform--or fail--for entirely predictable (and
avoidable ) reasons.

Similar hazards face successful executives, professionals, and leaders of every
kind. One danger of success is the increased difficulty of recognizing and adjusting
to shifts in the business environment. No one knows this better than the former
leaders of Nokia and Kodak, two once-great brands that ignored the timeless wisdom
that a peak always conceals a treacherous valley.

It can be hard to see new possibilities that will allow future success, especially when it requires letting go of previously effective strategies that served you well. This is where the outside perspective of a consultant can be particularly useful. Our 16 authors offer you a competitive advantage in the business world and an alternative to that treacherous valley.

Dive into the Silicon Valley magic by reading one of our chapters. As a result, you'll understand why in this amazing center of innovation, failures are called "prototypes," the "impossible" is merely difficult, and dreams become reality.

Описание:

B-Suite leaders are today's middle managers, the glue that holds organisations together, translating strategy into action and creating high performing workforces.

Yet the B-Suite is stretched thin balancing the chaos of today's business landscape. They are too junior to be 'in the room', yet senior enough to be looked up to by their team. They are expected to provide information, decisions and direction and often have little to go on. It can be a frustrating space.

Already experienced leaders, B-Suite development is often overlooked. Yet enabling these leaders to adjust to the new normal, and to have even greater impact is a huge win for any organization.

Does that sound like you? Do you wish you could control the pace of work, have some space to think, and influence outcomes more easily?

It's time to level up your leadership.

This book shows you how, through ten practical tools to use on a daily basis. These will help you level up your B-Suite game and have greater impact. In here, you'll find Rebecca's hard-won learnings on the B-Suite pathway. They are the foundation of her Level Up program, designed for all B-Suiters who seek more impact but lack the confidence, influence or headspace to get it right.
