Описание: Upton Sinclair's classic revelatory novel about turn-of-the-century business and immigrant labor practices.

Jurgis Rudkus, a young Lithuanian immigrant in search of a better life, faces instead an epic struggle for survival. His story of factory life in Chicago in the early twentieth century is a saga of barbarous working conditions, crushing poverty, crime, disease, and despair.

Upton Sinclair's vivid depiction of the horrors of Chicago's stockyards and slaughterhouses aroused such public indignation that a government investigation was called, eventually resulting in the passage of pure food laws. More than a hundred years later, The Jungle continues to pack the same emotional power it did when it was first published.

Includes an Introduction by Alicia Mischa Renfroe
and an Afterword by Dr.

Barry Sears

Описание:

When Allan moves to New York City from Mississippi, his brother, Oliver, who had been living in the city for a few years prior, decides to introduce Allan to an exclusive group of wealthy people. Hoping that it will help Allan's law business, Oliver gets Allan invites to parties and meetings, which quickly grant Allan access to the decadence of the rich. With expensive cars, private trains, thousand-dollar clothing, and gluttonous meals made by servants, these rich elites are living at the height of luxury. Meanwhile, the lower-class citizens of the city are stuck in job with poor work conditions, terrible pay, and unsafe environments. Most even struggled to keep their family fed. Allan is unable to turn a blind eye to the suffering. He launches a court case to help lessen the blight of the poor, but soon realizes that the people he is fighting against are the elite citizens he had met before--the most powerful people in New York. As Allan remembers the drama of the elite, including torrid affairs, issues of alcoholism, venomous gossip, and vicious backstabbing, he knows that he must be careful and clever to survive the shallow values and cruel intentions of the wealthy society. Known as a master of detail, Upton Sinclair depicts a story of high drama with meticulous prose and compelling themes. Set in the exciting scene of New York City in 1907, The Metropolis depicts a duality by showing both the glamorous and obscene lifestyle of the rich and the desolate, difficult life of the poor and working class. This contrast describes the cruelty of the rich, often making the poor victims to their greed and selfishness. With a compelling message, plot twists, and backstabbing, The Metropolis is both an entertaining and enthralling read. This edition of The Metropolis by Upton Sinclair features an eye-catching cover design and is printed in a modern and readable font. With these accommodations, contemporary readers are able to enjoy Upton Sinclair's distinguished novel with style and ease.

Описание: James T. Kitchens and Larry Powell examine why political messages appeal to voters in the United States by exploring the four pillars of the American psyche: fear, national narcissism, consumerism, and religiosity. These pillars, combined with the related matrix of attitudes, beliefs, and values, determine how political communication is understood.

Описание: A compelling graphic novel adaptation of Upton Sinclair's seminal protest novel that brings to life the harsh conditions and exploited existences of immigrants in Chicago's meatpacking industry in the early twentieth century.

Long acclaimed around the world, Upton Sinclair's 1906 muckraking novel The Jungle remains a powerful book even today. Not many works of literature can boast that their publication brought about actual social and labor change, but that's just what The Jungle did, as it led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906. In today's society, where labor and safety of the food we eat remain key concerns for all, Sinclair's shocking story still resonates. Bringing new life and energy to this classic work, adapter and illustrator Kristina Gehrmann takes Sinclair's prose and transforms it through pen and ink, allowing you to discover (or rediscover) this book and see it from a whole new perspective.

Описание: The Jungle, a novel by American journalist Upton Sinclair (1878-1968), was written in 1906 to portray the harsh conditions and exploited lives of immigrants living in Chicago and similar industrialized cities in the United States. While his main goal in describing the working conditions in the meat industry was based on an investigation he conducted for a socialist newspaper with the goal of advancing socialism in the United States, most readers were more concerned with several of the passages exposing health violations and unsanitary practices in the American meat packing industry during the early 20th century. It greatly contributed to a public outcry, which led to reforms including the Meat Inspection Act. Sinclair famously said of the public reaction, "I aimed at the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach."

The book depicts working-class poverty amid a lack of social support, harsh and unpleasant living and working conditions, and a sense of hopelessness among the many workers. These elements contrasted greatly with the deeply rooted corruption of the people in power. A review by writer Jack London called it the "Uncle Tom's Cabin of wage slavery."

Sinclair had spent seven weeks working incognito in the meatpacking plants of the Chicago stockyards while gathering information for the socialist newspaper, Appeal to Reason. As a journalist who exposed corruption in government and business, he was considered a "muckraker." He first published The Jungle in serial form in the newspaper in 1905 and it was then published as a book in 1906.
