Описание: The texts of the present Compendium, seemingly the most comprehensive collection of ShiI pilgrimage prayers addressed to the Fourteen Infallibles (AS), have been edited by collating reliable sources. Each prayer is preceded by traditions on the merits of visiting the shrine of the Infallible to be followed by the narrations and sources of prayer. The classification of the prayers is regional (ie: they are arranged according to the burial places of the Infallibles). Further, mention has been made of the devotional acts to be performed at each shrine. The contents of the volumes include the following: Volume 1: (Medina) includes the pilgrimage prayers devoted to the Noble Prophet (SAW), Fatimat al-Zahra (SA), the Imams (AS) and saints buried at the Baqi Cemetery, and the martyrs of the Uhud Battle; Volume 2: the prayers devoted to the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali (AS; Najaf) and those said at the Mosque of Kufa; Volume 3: those devoted to Imam al-Husayn (AS) and Hadrat Abu al-Fadl alAbbas (AS) and other martyrs buried in Karbala; Volume 4: those devoted to the Kazimayn (ie: Imam Musa (AS) and Imam Muhammad Taqi (AS), and the Askariyan, ie: Imam Ali al-Naqi (AS) and Imam Hasan al-Askari (AS), and those of Imam al-Mahdi, the Twelfth Imam (AS; Samarra and Kazimayn); Volume 5: those devoted to Imam al-Rida (AS; Mashhad); Volume 6: Ziyarat al-Jamia (ie: general prayers and also those devoted to the descendants of the Imams (eg: Hadrat Masuma (AS)).

Drawing on a wide variety of little-known sources in Urdu and Persian, apart from the more conventional British records, this book provides a revelatory and vivid narrative of Muslims in the period covering the British conquest in 1803 to the end of the Khilafat movement in 1922. Moving away from the tendency of studies on Muslims to focus on religious identity, this book allows us to historicize Islam and socially contextualize its many manifestations. Treating identities as inherently dynamic and ever changing, Pernau argues that religious identity became central for Muslims only in the last third of the nineteenth century, and this was closely linked with the creation of a middle class whose members described themselves as ashraf, or men from a good family. The new concept of respectability or sharafat on which the middle class was based allowed it to, at once, draw a distance from the old nobility, bring the learned section of the community closer to the businessmen, and demarcate it sharply from the subalterns. The book focuses on the agency of historical actors--their perceptions and memories--to help us understand what it means to be a Muslim as well as fathom the varied interactions between identities defined by religion, language, geography, and gender.
