It's not often that a career in photography makes as many twists and turns as it has for Jack Dykinga. Early in Jack's career as a photojournalist he won the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography. He then worked as a photo editor and later became a wilderness guide. Today, Jack's work as a landscape photographer is world-renowned.
After a near-death experience, Jack formed a new perspective that provided a framework for self examination and a deeper look into why images resonate with a photographer's feelings. As the images displayed in this book progress through the distinct periods in Jack's life, he describes the influences and events that shaped his changing style and his design sense. With an intense sense of gratitude, he explains the forces that caused his focus to evolve, and he describes the often-subtle changes that define his work.
A virtual "who's who" of editors, writers, and photographers have influenced Jack's photographic journey, which has spanned fifty years. His amassed images form a body of work that is diverse and profound. From huddled figures in mental institutions to sweeping landscapes, his images span an enormous emotional range from disturbing to celebratory to sublime. Описание:
Dutchman Jan Dibbets (b. 1941) is one of the principal artists to have introduced photography into the plastic arts. Beginning in 1967, he embarked on a long-range project that, as we advance into the twenty-first century, he seems not to have abandoned: the "pictorializing" of photography. At a time when photography has massively invaded contemporary art institutions--not without generating confusion and excess--it is possible to lose track of how radical Dibbets's approach was. This radicalism has nothing to do with modernist overkill. Dibbets did not merely go further than others; he went elsewhere. This books covers almost fifty years of his photographic oeuvre.

Описание:
Best-known for Saigon Execution, his Pulitzer Prize–winning photograph that forever shaped how the world views the horrors of war, Eddie Adams was a renowned American photojournalist who won more than five hundred awards, including the George Polk Award for News Photography three times and the Robert Capa Gold Medal. During his fifty-year career, he worked as a staff photographer for the Associated Press, Time, and Parade, and his photos appeared on more than 350 magazine covers. Adams is also famous and deeply respected for founding the Eddie Adams Workshop, an intensive photography seminar whose graduates include twelve Pulitzer Prize–winners and many others who have achieved illustrious careers in journalism, commercial photography, and media.
Eddie Adams presents a career-spanning selection of the photographer’s finest work from the 1950s through the early 2000s, drawn from the Eddie Adams Photographic Archive at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin. In addition to his much-praised Vietnam War photography, the book includes images that uncannily reflect world and domestic issues of today, including immigration, conflict in the Middle East, and the refugee crisis. All of them attest to Adams’s overwhelming desire to tell people’s stories. As he once observed, “I actually become the person I am taking a picture of. If you are starving, I am starving, too.” Accompanying the images are an essay by internationally acclaimed photography curator Anne Wilkes Tucker, a personal remembrance by Adams’s widow Alyssa Adams, a foreword by Briscoe Center director Don Carleton, who provides a concise history of Adams’s career, and a timeline.
Описание: At the turn of the twentieth century, the photographer Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky undertook a quest to document an empire that was undergoing rapid change due to industrialization and the building of railroads. Between 1903 and 1916 Prokudin-Gorsky, who developed a pioneering method of capturing color images on glass plates, scoured the Russian Empire with the patronage of Nicholas II. Intrepidly carrying his cumbersome and awkward camera from the western borderlands over the Volga River to Siberia and central Asia, he created a singular record of Imperial Russia. In 1918 Prokudin-Gorsky escaped an increasingly chaotic, violent Russia and regained nearly 2,000 of his bulky glass negatives. His subsequent peripatetic existence before settling in Paris makes his collection's survival all the more miraculous. The U.S. Library of Congress acquired Prokudin-Gorsky's collection in 1948, and since then it has become a touchstone for understanding pre-revolutionary Russia. Now digitized and publicly available, his images are a sensation in Russia, where people visit websites dedicated to them. William Craft Brumfield—photographer, scholar, and the leading authority on Russian architecture in the West—began working with Prokudin-Gorsky's photographs in 1985. He curated the first public exhibition of them in the United States and has annotated the entire collection. In Journeys through the Russian Empire, Brumfield—who has spent decades traversing Russia and photographing buildings and landscapes in their various stages of disintegration or restoration—juxtaposes Prokudin-Gorsky's images against those he took of the same buildings and areas. In examining the intersections between his own photography and that of Prokudin-Gorsky, Brumfield assesses the state of preservation of Russia's architectural heritage and calls into question the nostalgic assumptions of those who see Prokudin-Gorsky's images as the recovery of the lost past of an idyllic, pre-Soviet Russia. This lavishly illustrated volume—which features some 400 stunning full-color images of ancient churches and mosques, railways and monasteries, towns and remote natural landscapes—is a testament to two brilliant photographers whose work prompts and illuminates, monument by monument, questions of conservation, restoration, and cultural identity and memory.
