Описание:

The Backyard Adventures of Mason and Mazey (A Teaching Book) is a lighthearted adventure of learning to understand our surroundings and our impact on all things that may not be so apparent to us in our busy day-to-day lives. It captures the escapades of five-year-old Mason and his basset hound, best friend, Mazey, as her hound nose takes them a bit too far into the woods. They meet up with the animals found in backyards across Orange County, New York, who teach Mason about their habitats and behaviors and the dangers of wandering too far into the woods without an adult. Mason learns valuable lessons about his perceptions and adventurous spirit when he is a bit out of his familiar surroundings. Learning to share Gods green earth with the animals that were here long before our houses and our urban sprawl are valuable lessons not only for Mason and Mazey, but for generations to come.

In Short Stuff, bestselling and award-winning authors dial down the angst in four meet-cute LGBTQ young adult romances.

Описание:

This work is the second in a series of studies illuminating important, yet overlooked and forgotten Latino Civil Rights activists. Each study is unique and a standalone presentation of an individual and the times in which that individual lived. Each study is neither a biography nor monograph, but an introduction to that activist and the situations in which the individual was required to function.

The reader may well be advised to view each work as an introduction to the life and times of the individual. Additionally, no person is an isolated life. Each of us is part of an interlocking association of friends, acquaintances, and unfortunately enemies as well. Thus, many other players interact with each of our main characters to some extent, great or small, and for good or evil. Some of these other players will tend to appear in their various roles in more than one of the works in this series, and more than one may become the main character in one of these works.

This work has such juxtaposition with the first book in our proposed series. The first book focuses on the life of Bert Corona, a blacklisted Hispanic civil rights activist. In that book, a work focused primarily upon Bert Corona, another character appears in a discussion of the Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case. This financial wizard was Josefina Fierro, the main character in this study. Thus, various characters, both protagonists and antagonists, appear in these various roles, large and small, much as a series of books might have interlocking characters fulfilling major or minor roles as the series develops. However, these characters have the added worth of being real human beings living their lives in a period that brought about our own world of the present.

Thus, this series of studies has as a main goal, to address these individuals and their activities with the available source material. If there is no other value to them, may the value of "Let every voice be heard" constitute the motivation for their existence. However, I believe that the overwhelming percentage of readers will find the material fascinating and informative. Additionally, I believe that the history presented is sound and served to expand the knowledge base of the lives and times examined. As always, I wish each one of you a smashing good read and intellectual illumination.

-The Gypsy Moth Summer plunges the reader into a hazy, hot daydream of hidden truth, scandal, and racial prejudice. With bold strokes, Julia Fierro creates a vivid world where privilege and class are merely a veneer to distract from the cracks beneath the surface.- -- Jodi Picoult, New York Times bestselling author of Leaving Time

-Fierro doesn't just observe, she knows. Like all great novelists, she gives us the world.- - Amy Bloom, bestselling author of Away and Lucky Us

It is the summer of 1992 and a gypsy moth invasion blankets Avalon Island. Ravenous caterpillars disrupt early summer serenity on Avalon, an islet off the coast of Long Island--dropping onto novels left open on picnic blankets, crawling across the T-shirts of children playing games of tag and capture the flag in the island's leafy woods. The caterpillars become a relentless topic of island conversation and the inescapable soundtrack of the season.

It is also the summer Leslie Day Marshall--only daughter of Avalon's most prominent family--returns with her husband, a botanist, and their children to live in -The Castle, - the island's grandest estate. Leslie's husband Jules is African-American, and their children bi-racial, and islanders from both sides of the tracks form fast and dangerous opinions about the new arrivals.

Maddie Pencott LaRosa straddles those tracks: a teen queen with roots in the tony precincts of East Avalon and the crowded working class corner of West Avalon, home to Grudder Aviation factory, the island's bread-and-butter and birthplace of generations of bombers and war machines. Maddie falls in love with Brooks, Leslie's and Jules' son, and that love feels as urgent to Maddie as the questions about the new and deadly cancers showing up across the island. Could Grudder Aviation, the pride of the island--and its patriarch, the Colonel--be to blame?

As the gypsy moths burst from cocoons in flocks that seem to eclipse the sun, Maddie's and Brooks' passion for each other grows and she begins planning a life for them off Avalon Island.

Vivid with young lovers, gangs of anxious outsiders; a plotting aged matriarch and her husband, a demented military patriarch; and a troubled young boy, each seeking his or her own refuge, escape and revenge, The Gypsy Moth Summer is about love, gaps in understanding, and the struggle to connect: within families; among friends; between neighbors and entire generations.

Описание:

One of the most anticipated debut novels of 2014, Cutting Teeth takes place one late-summer weekend as a group of thirty-something couples gather at a shabby beach house on Long Island, their young children in tow.

Nicole, the hostess, struggles to keep her OCD behaviors unnoticed. Stay-at-home dad Rip grapples with the reality that his careerist wife will likely deny him a second child, forcing him to disrupt the life he loves. Allie, one half of a two-mom family, can't stop imagining ditching her wife and kids in favor of her art. Tiffany, comfortable with her amazing body but not so comfortable in the upper-middle class world the other characters were born into, flirts dangerously, and spars with her best friend Leigh, a blue blood secretly facing financial ruin and dependent on the magical Tibetan nanny everyone else covets. Throughout the weekend, conflicts intensify and painful truths surface. Friendships and alliances crack, forcing the house party to confront a new order.Cutting Teeth is about the complex dilemmas of early midlife--the vicissitudes of friendship, of romantic and familial love, and of sex. It's about class tension, status hunger, and the unease of being in possession of life's greatest bounty while still wondering, is this as good as it gets? And, perhaps most of all, Julia Fierro's warm and unpretentious debut explores the all-consuming love we feel for those we need most, and the sacrifice and compromise that underpins that love.
