Описание: In spite of the defeat of hyperinflation and improvements in macroeconomic management, the 1990s Washington Consensus-based reforms failed to reverse long-existing declines in productivity in Latin America. They also failed to create adequate local credit markets necessary for higher and more stable growth.
By neglecting key matters of distribution, social welfare and investment in the region's human resources, the reforms have limited the prospects for long-term growth and left millions of Latin Americans feeling as if they have little stake in democratic governance and market economics. Drawing upon insights from top political and economic analysts from Latin America and the United States, Latin America after the Washington Consensus: Re-assessing Policies and Priorities discusses the need to reduce current levels of inequality and unemployment, invest in education to increase productivity and competitiveness, and strengthen the capacity of the state to withstand changes in the global economy.
Reaching higher rates of growth would solve many of the region's problems, but most Latin American countries have yet to generate the institutional and social conditions that would sustain such growth and endow local economies with more resilience. Warning against one-size-fits-all solutions, Latin America after the Washington Consensus insists that each Latin American state must respond to these challenges with pragmatic strategies based on its own strengths and weaknesses.
Описание: With the rapid development of China and India as new economic powers in global competition, an obvious question is whether these emerging economies are great opportunities or threats. Whilst answers are bound to differ depending on one’s perspective, it is increasingly clear that more local firms, especially local entrepreneurs, from these emerging economies will play a more critical role in global competition by becoming challengers to global incumbents. Indeed, the fact that the majority of their populations are at the bottom of the pyramid, and thus cannot afford products designed for the developed markets, has made these emerging economies fertile ground for developing and applying disruptive innovations. A novel mix of key attributes distinctive from those of established technologies or business models, disruptive innovations are typically inferior, yet affordable and "good-enough" products or services, which originate in lower-end market segments, but later move up to compete with those provided by incumbent firms. This book sheds new light on disruptive innovations both from and for the bottom of the pyramid in China and India, from the point of view of local entrepreneurs and international firms seeking to operate their businesses there. It covers both the theoretical and practical implications of disruptive innovation using conceptual frameworks alongside detailed case studies, whilst also providing a comparison of conditions and strategic options in India and China. Further, unlike existing studies, this book focuses on the neglected perspective of local challengers as the primary players, and in doing so reveals the extent to which the future landscape of global competition may be shaped by disruptive innovation, as well as its capacity to make the world "flatter" and more sustainable. This unique book will be valuable to both scholars and practitioners interested in disruptive innovation and those working in the fields of Asian studies, international business, economics and globalization.
Описание: The thought-provoking book presents alternative viewpoints to mainstream macroeconomic theory, questions conventional policy wisdom and suggests a systematic re-orientation of current macroeconomic and financial regulatory policies in India. The New Consensus Macroeconomics (NCM), which established itself in the 1980s as mainstream macroeconomics, essentially represents an “uneasy truce” between two dominant schools of economic thought viz. New Classical and Neo-Keynesian economics. The NCM sets the tone for much of the macroeconomic (especially monetary) policy followed by the advanced economies in the period of the Great Moderation (1990–2005). The recent global crisis has posed a major challenge to the NCM as empirical models based on the NCM failed to anticipate the occurrence of the crisis and later its extent and severity. The above considerations constitute the underpinnings of this book, which addresses the theoretical controversies within a general context and their policy implications for India. The authors’ analysis leads to a somewhat critical assessment of the financial sector policies followed in India since the initiation of reforms in 1991. This makes the book a valuable resource not only for researchers working in this area, but also for policy makers.

Описание: This volume of the Future of Warfare series examines some of the most notable economic trends that could affect U.S. national security: increasing pressure on the global trading system, relative declines in U.S. and allied economic might, the rise of China, the search for new resources, the shrinking defense industrial base, and the decreasing power of U.S. sanctions.
Описание: The often-advocated view that the information technology revolution will change the world must stem from the basic premiss that invesent in IT has a visible impact on productivity and economic growth. But how can we measure this impact and how large is it? By surveying previous studies and by presenting new micro- and macroeconomic evidence, this collection shows that in recent years the use of IT in the production of goods and services has had a strong influence on productivity and economic growth in industrial and in newly industrialized countries. Yet developing countries seem neither to have invested in IT nor benefited from such investments to the same extent as industrial countries. There is concern that information is becoming a commodity, like income and wealth, by which countries are classified as rich and poor. The contributors to this volume argue that investment in infrastructure, physical capital, and education is the key to economic development. This is an old policy prescription in the economics of development. What is new is the suggestion that the IT content of these investments should be high. The use of IT is so widely spread throughout the world economy that no single country can avoid investing in this technology if it wants to improve the standard of living of its citizens. Besides providing citizens with access to IT and to IT education and training, governments should promote participation in the information society, thus generating a sufficiently strong demand base for information products. By developing advanced applications of IT, and by becoming a model for the private sector, governments can alter worker, firm, and consumer attitudes, and lower their costs of adopting IT. The use of IT, not necessarily its production, is what matters for economic development.
Описание: As the country that inspires the world with 'gross national happiness' development philosophy, Bhutan is striving to pursue its economic growth while committing to its core values of inclusive and green development. Even with robust economic growth rates, Bhutan's dependence on imports and hydropower revenues drives the country to search for self-reliant option to fuel the economy while further decarbonizing the economy. Electric vehicle is being explored as one of the key policies to introduce green mobility, reduce fossil fuel imports and put the country firmly on a green growth path. Globally, electric vehicles market and technology are still in the nascent stage but are developing rapidly. The automotive industry has adopted electrification as a pillar of future drive train technology. EV uptake is expected to increase significantly with ongoing improvements in technology and resulting cost decreases in the global market. This report aims to help Bhutan think through various technical and policy issues of introducing electric vehicles in its own context. It analyses a variety of factors that will impact adoption of electric vehicles from technical, market and financial feasibility to consumer awareness and stakeholders' capacity. It also addresses several policy questions which are at the heart of public debate such as affordability of the government to undertake the program, economic costs and benefits, distributional impact, fiscal, and macroeconomic implications. Drawing from vast international experiences, the report examines in great technical details how global cutting-edge technology like electric vehicles could be pursued in the context of developing economies with different socio-economic characteristics and constraints compared to advanced economies. It will help readers better grasp the technical, financial, economic and social challenges as well as opportunities in initiating electric vehicles program and provide practical recommendations that will be useful for policy makers in designing their own EV initiative.
