Описание: This volume traces the course of development of Charan Singhs discontent in the Congress, which aided by the antagonism on the part of Nehru and his daughter towards him, and the decline of the Congress as the dominant party in Uttar Pradesh, led ultimately to his defection to form a new political party and, at last, to achieve his goal of becoming chief minister of UP.

Like the earlier volume, this book is based primarily on the authors personal relationship with Charan Singh during his political career and early access to his massive political files and the authors own personal interviews with politicians, other public persons, peasants, and others over 50 years, up to the present. It also provides an account of the chief ministership of Sucheta Kripalani—a political outsider catapulted to the top by the power struggles of fractious factions—and at the same time explores against the backdrop of regionalism in UP the considerable yet little-known role played by Charan Singh in issues of states reorganization for northern India.

This book is the second volume of a multi-volume work on The Politics of Northern India: 1937 to 1987.

Описание: In the two World Wars, hundreds of thousands of Indian sepoys were mobilized, recruited and shipped overseas to fight for the British Crown. The Indian Army was the chief Imperial reserve for an empire under threat. But how did those sepoys understand and explain their own war experiences and indeed themselves through that experience? How much did their testimonies realise and reflect their own fragmented identities as both colonial subjects and imperial policemen? The Testimonies of Indian Soldiers and the Two World Wars draws upon the accounts of Indian combatants to explore how they came to terms with the conflicts. In thematic chapters, Gajendra Singh traces the evolution of military identities under the British Raj and considers how those identities became embattled in the praxis of soldiers’ war testimonies – chiefly letters, depositions and interrogations. It becomes a story of mutiny and obedience; of horror, loss and silence. This book tells that story and is an important contribution to histories of the British Empire, South Asia and the two World Wars.

Описание: Positions the history and inner workings of the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) against the canvas of the major political developments in South Africa during the 1970s and 1980s up to the first democratic elections in 1994 Following a hiatus in the 1960s, the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) in South Africa was revived in 1971. In fascinating detail, Ashwin Desai and Goolam Vahed bring the inner workings of the NIC to life against the canvas of major political developments in South Africa during the 1970s and 1980s, and up to the first democratic elections in 1994. The NIC was relaunched during the rise of the Black Consciousness Movement, which attracted a following among Indian university students, and whose invocation of Indians as Black led to a major debate about ethnic organisations such as the NIC. This debate persisted in the 1980s with the rise of the United Democratic Front and its commitment to non-racialism. The NIC was central to other major debates of the period, most significantly the lines drawn between boycotting and participating in government-created structures such as the Tri-Cameral Parliament. Despite threats of banning and incarceration, the NIC kept attracting recruits who encouraged the development of community organisations, such as students radicalised by the 1980s education boycotts and civic protests. Colour, Class and Community, The Natal Indian Congress, 1971—1994 details how some members of the NIC played dual roles, as members of a legal organisation and as allies of the African National Congress' underground armed struggle. Drawing on varied sources, including oral interviews, newspaper reports, and minutes of organisational meetings, this in-depth study tells a largely untold history, challenging existing narratives around Indian 'cabalism', and bringing the African and Indian political story into present debates about race, class and nation.

Описание:

This book traces the debates around the concept of ‘Right and Right-wing Politics’ in the Indian political context.

Delineating the differing ideological positions held by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Dr Rajendra Prasad and C. Rajagopalachari on the one hand and of their leftist/socialist detractors and opponents on the other, this book questions the validity of using terms such as ‘Rightist’  or ‘Leftist’ based on Eurocentric notions without understanding the Indian context. It establishes the fact that these three Gandhian leaders did not represent conservative or reactionary forces. They, in fact, practised and promoted progressive ideas in their vision of socio-economic reconstruction of the country. Being anti-imperialists to the core, they stood for democratic and secular ideals promoting communal harmony effectively.

This study attempts to relook at the categorization of ‘Right’ and ‘Left’ in our national politics and stresses that history is not to be studied through the prism of politics. It is as much a book for the scholars and researchers as it is for anyone interested in Indian politics.
