Описание: Presents the state of biodiversity for food and agriculture in the Near East and North Africa region based on reports received from nine of the region`s countries, as well as on the outcomes of an informal regional consultation organised by FAO.

The region supports many diverse ecosystems and a high level of biodiversity. The richest and most varied biodiversity tends to be found on high volcanic islands, where there are larger ecosystems and a greater range of habitats. However, the isolation of low-lying islands has often resulted in intense speciation and given rise to levels of endemism that are unique globally. Climate change is threatening the strategic reservoir of genetic resources, while economic and market influences are very strong drivers of change.
The report suggests that overall, knowledge of associated biodiversity (particularly in soils), wild foods and ecosystem functioning is limited, and that all countries agreed that the main constraint in this field is funding. However, the key to optimizing limited resources is to prioritize research needs at national and regional levels. A regional conference on biodiversity for food and agriculture would help in this prioritization process.

Описание: These guidelines support a harmonized international approach to assessing the impacts of livestock on biodiversity. The livestock sector is a major user of natural resources (land in particular) and contributor to pollution (causing nutrient losses and increasing greenhouse gas emissions), which makes it a sector with a high impact on biodiversity.
Описание: In Search of Biohappiness deals with methods of converting agro-biodiversity hotspots into happy spots. This involves concurrent attention to conservation, and sustainable and equitable use.

The Africa region has a diverse range of production systems, varying from small and mostly mixed systems to large-scale industrial systems. In African smallholder agricultural landscapes, home gardens constitute a particularly important source of biodiversity for food and agriculture and their contribution to plant species richness and diversity is increasingly gaining interest among researchers. Naturally regenerated forests also represent an important repository of biodiversity for food and agriculture.
The report indicates that currently many countries have no policies in place that explicitly address the management of biodiversity for food and agriculture and that associated biodiversity and wild foods tend to be neglected. A number of countries, however, mention more broadly focused instruments, such as national biodiversity strategies and action plans. The report concludes that multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder consultations in the development of relevant policy and legal instruments need to be strengthened.
Описание: This study provides an overview of the roles that the biodiversity found in and around food and agricultural production systems play in the supply of ecosystem services. These range from provisioning services, such as the supply of food, fuel and fibre, to cultural services, including recreation and aesthetic enjoyment, and regulating services (e.g. pollination, carbon sequestration, pest control and nutrient cycling).
Biodiversity for Food and Agriculture corresponds to “the variety and variability of animals, plants and micro-organisms at the genetic, species and ecosystem levels that sustain the ecosystem structures, functions and processes in and around production systems, and that provide food and non-food agricultural products.” The study considers a range of ecosystem services across the “provisioning”, “regulating”, “supporting”, “habitat” and “cultural” categories.
The examples presented in the report show that the benefits that a given food and agricultural production unit (i.e. farm, fish farm, forest stand, fishery or livestock holding) gains from biodiversity generally come both from within and from outside the production unit. They also show that the biodiversity present in and around food and agricultural production systems often provides ecosystem services whose benefits are felt far beyond the food and agriculture sector (and in some cases far away in geographical terms).
Описание: Forests cover just over 30 percent of the global land area, yet they provide habitat for the vast majority of the terrestrial plant and animal species known to science. Unfortunately, forests and the biodiversity they contain continue to be under threat from actions to convert the land to agriculture or unsustainable levels of exploitation, much of it illegal.
The State of the World’s Forests 2020 assesses progress to date in meeting global targets and goals related to forest biodiversity and examines the effectiveness of policies, actions and approaches, in terms of both conservation and sustainable development outcomes. A series of case studies provide examples of innovative practices that combine conservation and sustainable use of forest biodiversity to create balanced solutions for both people and the planet.
