Описание: One of the most critical requirements for safe and reliable nuclear power plant operations is the availability of competent maintenance personnel. However, just as the nuclear power industry is experiencing a renaissance, it is also experiencing an exodus of seasoned maintenance professionals due to retirement. The perfect guide for engineers just entering the field or experienced maintenance supervisors who need to keep abreast of the latest industry best practices, Nuclear Power Plant Maintenance: Mechanical Systems, Equipment and Safety covers the most common issues faced in day-to-day operations and provides practical, technically proven solutions. The book also explains how to navigate the various maintenance codes, standards and regulations for the nuclear power industry.

Описание: Focuses on the storage of spent nuclear fuel from power reactors - a topic of increasing importance to Member States. To support their needs, the IAEA has carried out successive coordinated research projects on spent fuel performance and the behaviour of spent fuel assemblies in storage since the 1980s. This publication consolidates their findings.

Описание:

This book offers a comprehensive overview of the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuels, and discusses the applications of radiation, particularly spallation neutrons and gamma rays. The unspent nuclear fuel of a reactor amounts to roughly 95 per cent of the loaded fuel. It contains both fertile and fissile fuels, minor and higher actinides and radioactive fission products. In 2015, out of approximately 4 million metric tons of spent fuel, only 90,000 metric tons was reprocessed worldwide; the rest was either sent to repositories, kept for cooling down, or put on a waiting list for future reprocessing. With regard to the direct reutilization of spent nuclear fuel, the new technique of ‘Energy Amplifiers’ has attracted considerable attention among the nuclear energy community. Presenting extensive information on this technique, the book is divided into eight major sections: (i) spent nuclear fuel and alternative transmutation methods, (ii) general concept of accelerator-driven subcritical systems (ADSS), (iii) spallation neutron sources and the possibility of incineration, (iv) requirements for nuclear data, (v) transmutation of spent nuclear fuel and extension of the fuel cycle, (vi) spallation neutron production facilities, (vii) major experimental facilities for ADSS, and (viii) software tools for the design and modelling of ADSS. The book is ideally suited as a textbook for graduate students as well as a reference guide for researchers and practitioners.

Описание: These proceedings present the outcome of the 2015 IAEA international conference on the management of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors. Achievements and lessons learned in connection with the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle and associated challenges were shared and reviewed. The conference was organized around seven themes, covering spent fuel management strategies; status and challenges in an integrated approach; safety aspects of spent fuel management; ageing management programmes; storage options in support of an integrated approach; impact of the front end of the nuclear fuel cycle on the back end; and research and development required to deliver an integrated approach. Key goals were to raise awareness on how developments in power generation and availability of disposal can impact on spent fuel management, to evaluate the advances in management of spent fuel from power reactors since the inception of IAEA conferences on this topic, and to identify pending issues and anticipated future challenges. The main ideas and messages expressed and discussed at the conference are presented in the opening addresses, the session summaries and the President’s summary and conclusions of the conference. The attached CD contains the papers and posters presented at the conference.

Описание: This publication identifies issues and challenges relevant to the development and implementation of options, policies, strategies and programmes for ensuring safe, secure, and effective storage of spent fuel until transport for reprocessing or disposal. The target audience of this publication includes policy and decision makers who need to be aware of the implicit risks and costs associated with decision timing for determining and implementing an end point for spent fuel management (such as reprocessing or disposal) to ensure the responsible and sustainable use of nuclear energy. The publication will assist those within the nuclear industry in communicating the importance of a clear, credible and sustainable spent fuel management strategy and will encourage decision makers to consider different approaches that may be useful in addressing the uncertainties resulting from an unknown storage duration and an undefined end point for spent fuel management.
