Описание: Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability--at the level of literature, history, and politics--to grasp the scale and violence of climate change.
The extreme nature of today's climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned to other genres. In the writing of history, too, the climate crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications; Ghosh shows that the history of the carbon economy is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements.
Ghosh ends by suggesting that politics, much like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence--a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer's summons to confront the most urgent task of our time.
Описание: What if the harbinger of our greener future was a small power plant set in the middle of nowhere in West Texas? Longtime alternative energy executive Andy Bowman's book makes exactly this case, outlining what he suggests is a more sustainable future for American capitalism. The West Texas Power Plant that Saved the World takes the Barilla solar plant in Pecos County as a test case for the state of renewable energy in the twenty-first century United States. For author Andy Bowman, this is a very personal story. Bowman grew up in Galveston and acutely remembers watching stormwater climb up seawalls and wreak havoc on his home. He weaves these memories into his coming of age over two decades in the alternative energy industry, beginning in the 1990s, and tracks it's the industry's fits and starts that lead to the Barilla project. Barilla was the first solar project to be built "on spec": essentially, the plant was built without a contract in place and with the assumption that customers would come. That trailblazing wager represents a tidal shift in the alternative energy industry. In a clear voice, Bowman explains the climate science that necessitated this shift and makes business-based arguments for what the future should look like. The result is a book that tells a personal story of West Texan innovation, gumption, and vision, while also outlining how our society needs to equip itself to confront climate change.
Описание: This manual provides risk-based guidance for designing, planning and implementing effective participatory and syndromic surveillance of Rift Valley fever (RVF). It shows how to tailor this guidance to the epidemiological needs of individual countries, starting with setting appropriate objectives.
RVF virus, a mosquito-borne zoonotic agent, causes haemorrhagic fever in humans, and abortion and neonatal death in livestock. Outbreaks have caused national meat markets to collapse and have provoked regional trade embargoes. The geography of infection and clinical disease is expanding, also because of climate change.
This publication argues that effective surveillance is essential to mitigate the impact of RVF. For this reason, RVF surveillance objectives need to be in line with the country’s risk category and economic goals. The manual suggests questions to help build a timely and sensitive surveillance system suited to national objectives and resources.

Описание: These guidelines outline the process for preparing a National Plan for Conservation and Sustainable Use of Farmers’ Varieties/Landraces, in support of national authorities seeking to develop a systematic approach to the management of these genetic resources. They focus on the common elements required to ensure a systematic, national approach to conservation and sustainable use of farmers’ varieties/landraces.
The cultivation of diverse farmers' varieties/landraces, which tend to be well-adapted and suited to local production systems, confers increased resilience for crop production. Unfortunately, many of these genetic resources have been replaced by modern cultivars in recent decades, resulting in a reduction in the number of varieties grown and/or loss of heterogeneity. Such losses make farming systems less resilient, especially to shocks from abiotic and biotic stresses.
These guidelines will contribute to addressing this continuing loss of diversity. They are a useful tool for development practitioners, researchers, students and policymakers who work on the conservation and sustainable use of these valuable resources.

Описание: This book presents an overview of agroecology within the framework of climate change. It covers elements of the changing climate and their impacts on crop production and agroecosystems, reporting on how plants will cope with these changes, and how we can mitigate these negative impacts to ensure food production for the growing population.
