Описание: In late nineteenth-century Germany, the onset of modernity transformed how people experienced place. In response to increased industrialization and urbanization, the expansion of international capitalism, and the extension of railway and other travel networks, the sense of being connected to a specific place gave way to an unsettling sense of displacement. Out of Place analyzes the works of three major representatives of German Realism-Wilhelm Raabe, Theodor Fontane, and Gottfried Keller-within this historical context. It situates the perceived loss of place evident in their texts within the contemporary discourse of housing and urban reform, but also views such discourse through the lens of twentienth-century theories of place. Informed by both phenomenological (Heidegger and Casey) as well as Marxist (Deleuze, Guattari, and Benjamin) approaches to place, John B. Lyon highlights the struggle to address issues of place and space that reappear today in debates about environmentalism, transnationalism, globalization, and regionalism.
Today, there are more people uprooted by conflict than at any time since World War II, and persecution and disasters further increase the record numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons. This book takes a new approach to examining the obstacles to resolving forced migration by focusing on the coping and problem-solving abilities of the refugees and other displaced persons themselves. The contributors to this volume bring interdisciplinary perspectives and methodologies from the fields of political science, law, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy to help scholars and practitioners look at the problem of refugee crises in a new light. The chapters draw on original fieldwork, including refugee testimonials, and archival research and cover major displacement situations throughout the world. For example, the contributors examine the long-term plights of the Palestinians and Sahrawi and refugees or internally displaced persons related to the cases of Colombia, Myanmar, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Liberia, Ghana, Haiti, and Nagorno-Karabakh. The findings of this work show that it is important to empower refugees, to tailor solutions to the particular circumstances of a crisis, and to directly involve refugees in conflict resolution processes.
Описание: Following the outbreak of the Syrian uprising in 2011, many Syrians fled to Egypt. This ethnographic study traces Syrian men's struggles in Cairo: their experiences in the Egyptian labour market and efforts to avoid unemployment; their ambitions to prove their 'groomability' in front of potential in-laws in order to get married; and their discontent with being assigned the label 'refugee'. The book reveals the strategies these men use to maintain their identity as the 'respectable Syrian middle-class man' - including engaging in processes of 'Othering' and the creation of hierarchies – and Magdalena Suerbaum explains why this proved so much more difficult for them after Morsi was toppled in 2013.
Based on in-depth interviews, conversations and long-term participant observations, Suerbaum identifies Syrian men's emotional struggles as they undergo the experience of forced displacement and she highlights the adaptability and ultimate elasticity of constructed masculinities. The Syrians interviewed share their memories and their understandings of sectarianism and growing up in Syria, their interactions with the Egyptian and Syrian states, and their experiences during the Syrian uprising. The book takes an intersectional approach with close attention to the 'refugee' as a classed and gendered person.

Описание: Fishery policy makers would often benefit from information on how a policy might change fishermen behavior before the policy is implemented. Discrete choice models may be used to make predictions about these potential chan-ges. Most of the simulation work done so far, however, has not been valida-ted. In this book, a discrete choice model of fishing location choices is estimated and used to simulate the impacts of a spatial policy on the behavior of fisher-men. The simulated redistribution of fishing effort is then compared with the actual redistribution of effort that had occurred with the implementation of this policy. Results from the presented case study underline the inherent problem of the simulation not being able to capture the fundamental change in the nature of the choice problem that occurs with the change in policy. Addressing this problem will be important as discrete choice models continue to be used to inform policy makers. Anybody with an interest in understanding human choices related to the use of natural resources may benefit from reading this book. Fisheries managers, fisheries economists, and graduate students in fisheries economics may find it particularly useful.
