Описание: Exploring the relationship between natural law theory and the philosophy of law, Bebhinn Donnelly proposes a new approach to natural law theory - one which addresses some of the tradition's shortcomings and advances further its approach to Hume's dichotomy. Key features: ? Provides a clear definition of `nature' in this context ? Contrasts the work of Hume and Kant regarding the `is/ought' issue ? Examines the approach in traditional natural law ? Presents a full discussion of Finnis and the departure from traditional natural law ? Proposes a new, natural law approach to normativity, drawing on the strengths of traditional natural law theory ? Illustrates how natural law may provide a normative base for law A Natural Law Approach to Normativity presents an original perspective on natural law theory and will be of interest to academics in philosophy of law, moral/political philosophy, natural law theorists, and students of jurisprudence internationally.
Описание: This collection of essays challenge claims that all inquiry must use either the empirical methods of scientific inquiry or the interpretive methods of the humanities. They argue that practical judgement is essential in all forms of inquiry, and aims to shape, rather than to describe or predict, the way things are.

Описание:
Normativity concerns what we ought to think or do and the evaluations we make. For example, we say that we ought to think consistently, we ought to keep our promises, or that Mozart is a better composer than Salieri. Yet what philosophical moral can we draw from the apparent absence of normativity in the scientific image of the world? For scientific naturalists, the moral is that the normative must be reduced to the nonnormative, while for nonnaturalists, the moral is that there must be a transcendent realm of norms.
Naturalism and Normativity engages with both sides of this debate. Essays explore philosophical options for understanding normativity in the space between scientific naturalism and Platonic supernaturalism. They articulate a liberal conception of philosophy that is neither reducible to the sciences nor completely independent of them--yet one that maintains the right to call itself naturalism. Contributors think in new ways about the relations among the scientific worldview, our experience of norms and values, and our movements in the space of reason. Detailed discussions include the relationship between philosophy and science, physicalism and ontological pluralism, the realm of the ordinary, objectivity and subjectivity, truth and justification, and the liberal naturalisms of Donald Davidson, John Dewey, John McDowell, and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

Описание: Kiesewetter defends the normativity of rationality by presenting a new solution to the problems that arise from the common assumption that we ought to be rational. He provides a defence of a reason-response conception of rationality, an evidence-relative account of reason, and an explanation of structural irrationality in relation to these accounts

Описание: This Handbook maps a central terrain of philosophy, and provides the definitive guide to it. An illustrious team of philosophers explore the concept of a reason to do or believe something, in order to determine what these reasons are and how they work. And they investigate the nature of `normative` claims about what we ought to do or believe.
Описание: This international edited collection examines how racism trajectories and manifestations in different locations relate and influence each other. The book unmasks and foregrounds the ways in which notions of European Whiteness have found form in a variety of global contexts that continue to sustain racism as an operational norm resulting in exclusion, violence, human rights violations, isolation and limited full citizenship for individuals who are not racialised as White. The chapters in this book specifically implicate European Whiteness – whether attempting to reflect, negate, or obtain it – in social structures that facilitate and normalise racism. The authors interrogate the dehumanisation of Blackness, arguing that dehumanisation enables the continuation of racism in White dominated societies. As such, the book explores instances of dehumanisation across different contexts, highlighting that although the forms may be locally specific, the outcomes are continually negative for those racialised as Black. The volume is refreshingly extensive in its analyses of racism beyond Europe and the United States, including contributions from Africa, South America and Australia, and illuminates previously unexplored manifestations of racism across the globe.
Описание: This exciting new study looks at degeneration and deviance in nineteenth-century science and late-Victorian Gothic fiction. The questions it raises are as relevant today as they were at the nineteenth century`s fin de siecle: What constitutes the norm from which a deviation has occurred? What exactly does it mean to be `normal` or `abnormal`?
Описание: With contributions from a range of scholars across differing disciplines, this fascinating volume tackles the history of the terms "normal" and "abnormal". Originally meaning "as occurring in nature", normality has taken on significant cultural gravitas and this book recognises and explores that fact.
Описание: It was not so long ago that the dominant picture of Kant`s practical philosophy was forma listic, focusing almost exclusively on his Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals and Critique of Practical Reason.

Описание: William H. Smith draws on both phenomenology and contemporary moral theory to argue that the source of moral normativity-that is, the justification of morality`s binding force-is the legitimate authority of other persons to hold us morally accountable and our self-responsible commitment to live up to that demand.
