Описание: The acclaimed author presents his unique insights into the works of great Russian authors including Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Gogol, Gorky, and Chekhov.
In the 1940s, when Vladimir Nabokov first embarked on his academic career in the United States, he brought with him hundreds of original lectures on the authors he most admired. For two decades those lectures served as the basis for Nabokov's teaching, first at Wellesley and then at Cornell, as he introduced undergraduates to the delights of great fiction.
This volume collects Nabokov's famous lectures on nineteenth-century Russian literature, with analysis and commentary on Nikolay Gogol's Dead Souls and "The Overcoat"; Ivan Turgenev's Fathers and Sons; Maxim Gorky's "On the Rafts"; Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina and The Death of Ivan Ilych; two short stories and a play by Anton Chekhov; and several works by Fyodor Dostoevsky, including Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, and The Possessed.
This volume also includes Nabokov's lectures on the art of translation, the nature of Russian censorship, and other topics. Featured throughout the volume are photographic reproductions of Nabokov's original notes.
"This volume . . . never once fails to instruct and stimulate. This is a great Russian talking of great Russians."--Anthony Burgess Introduction by Fredson Bowers
Автор: Amantonio Название: To Vaccinate or not to Vaccinate: A Review of Scientific Literature on Vaccines ISBN: ISBN-13(EAN): 9798653663222 Издательство: Неизвестно Цена: 2240.00 р. Наличие на складе: Есть (более 5-х шт.) Описание: In recent years, we hear more and more often that vaccines are safe and effective, that opponents of vaccination are dull and ignorant, that the amount of aluminum in one dose of a vaccine is less than a child gets from food, and that autism is in no way associated with vaccination. Let us see if these are truths, myths, or lies that cost you and your children’s health, and sometimes even life. According to the analysis of publications conducted by the author of this book, there is not a single competent study proving vaccine safety; people that refuse to vaccinate are mostly well-educated and wealthy; a single dose of the hepatitis B vaccine alone, which is given on the first day of life, has five times more aluminum than the baby will receive from breast milk in six months, and the more saturated the immunization schedule in the country is, the higher the infant mortality. In this book, you will find information about scientific research, which the media and health authorities keep quiet about. Only scientific facts about vaccination are given here, with almost no comments by the author.Read, think, draw your own conclusions.

Описание: Fieldwork of Empire, 1840-1900: Intercultural Dynamics in the Production of British Expeditionary Literature examines the impact of non-western cultural, political, and social forces and agencies on the production of British expeditionary literature; it is a project of recovery.
Thus book examines the spatial morphologies represented in a wide range of contemporary ethnic American literary and cinematic works. Drawing from Henri Lefebvre's theorization of space as a living organism, Edward Soja's writings on the postmetropolis, Marc Aug 's notion of the non-place, Manuel Castells' space of flows, and Michel de Certeau's theories of walking as a practice, the volume extends previous theorizations by examining how spatial uses, appropriations, strictures, ruptures, and reconfigurations function in literary texts and films that represent inhabitants of racial-ethnic borderlands and migrational U.S. cities. The authors argue for the necessity of an alternative poetics of place that makes room for those who move beyond the spaces of traditional visibility--displaced and homeless people, undocumented workers, hybrid and/or marginalized populations rendered invisible by the cultural elite, yet often disciplined by agents of surveillance. Building upon Doreen Massey's conceptualization of liminal space as a sphere in which narratives intersect, clash, or cooperate, this study recasts spatial paradigms to insert an array of emergent geographies of invisibility that the volume traverses via the analysis of works by Chuck Palahniuk, Helena Viramontes, Karen Tei Yamashita, Gloria Anzald a, Alejandro Morales, and Li-Young Lee, among others, and films such as Thomas McCarthy's The Visitor, Steven Spielberg's TheTerminal, and Alejandro Gonzalez I rritu's Babel.

Описание: This volume is meant to be a retrospective look at the field of Comparative Literature as it has developed in the past two decades, as well as a reflection on its future direction if it is to remain relevant (and innovative) as a field of study. From its inception in the second half of the twentieth century, Comparative Literature in the US has been conceived as a cross-disciplinary, cross-national, and crosscultural enterprise that brings together theoretical developments in the Humanitie and Social Sciences to reflect on the most important intellectual and cultural trends from a comparative perspective through the lens of literary studies. Most of the founders of Comparative Literature were distinguished European scholars who sought a safe haven from the ravages of World War II and its aftermath and who, understandably focused on the Western literary, intellectual and cultural tradition, which at the time was in danger of being annihilated by the onslaught of Fascism and Communism. With the advent of the age of globalization the field of Comparative Literature has become increasingly diverse and must, therefore, be reoriented and recognized accordingly.

Описание: Worlds of Hungarian Writing responds to the rapidly growing interest in Hungarian authors throughout the English-speaking world. Addressing an international audience, the essays in the collection highlight the intercultural contexts that have molded the conventions, genres and institutions of Hungarian writing from the nineteenth century to the present. They are mapping some of the ways in which a modern literature is produced by encounters with languages, cultures, and media external to its traditionally conceived boundaries. But rather than viewing intercultural exchange as an external force, the collection recognizes its enabling importance to the globalizing reception and circulation of Hungarian writing over the continuities and constraints implied by more traditional national narratives. Worlds of Hungarian Writing posits intercultural exchange as the very substance of a literary culture. Discussions of the politics of appropriation and translation, of the impact of emigre writers and critics, and of the use of world-literary models in genre-formation complement studies of the fate of western leftist critical theory in post-1989 Hungary, of the role of African-American models in contemporary Roma culture, and of the use of photography in late 20th-century prose. The volume spans a wide generic range, from the achievements of such canonical 19th-century critics and poets as Jozsef Bajza and Janos Arany, to neglected women authors-translators such as Theresa Pulszky, to modernist writers and critics like Antal Szerb and Gyorgy Lukacs, and to the contemporary novelists Peter Esterhazy, Peter Nadas, and Laszlo Krasznahorkai. Each essay is an original contribution to comparative literature and to the study of this Central-European literature, but is intended to be accessible to readers unfamiliar with its traditions."
