Описание: In March 2021 the Jewish Museum Vienna will be opening its new permanent exhibition at Museum Judenplatz. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication devoted to a chapter in Viennese history that has not had the attention it deserves. Medieval Vienna was home to one of the most important Jewish communities in Europe. Jews settled in the area of the present-day Judenplatz in the early thirteenth century and lived alongside and in close interaction with the Christian population for two hundred years, until they were robbed, expelled, and murdered by order of Duke Albert V in 1420/21.In ten essays and numerous illustrations, this book gives an overview not only of the first Jewish community in Vienna but also of the checkered history of Judenplatz. The focus on medieval Jewish Vienna hones perspectives on modern-day social interrelationships.

Описание: Bodily suffering and patient, Christlike attitudes towards that suffering were among the key characteristics of sainthood throughout the medieval period. Saints, Infirmity, and Community in the Late Middle Ages analyses the meanings given to putative saints’ bodily infirmities in late medieval canonization hearings. How was an individual saint’s bodily ailment investigated in the inquests, and how did the witnesses (re)construct the saintly candidates’ ailments? What meanings were given to infirmity when providing proofs for holiness? This study depicts holy infirmity as an aspect of sanctity that is largely defined within the community, in continual dialogue with devotees, people suffering from doubt, the holy person, and the cultural patterns ascribed to saintly life. Furthermore, it analyses how the meanings given to saints’ infirmities influenced and reflected society’s attitudes towards bodily ailments — or dis/ability — in general.

Описание: The history of the Krosno Jewish community is very brief but dynamic. Within a period of about ninety years a modern Jewish community was established that consisted of providing cultural, political, social, religious, and sport needs to the Jewish population. The Jewish community provided primary education to all Jewish youngsters so that they were able to read the Hebrew prayers. The community also tended to the needs of the poor and helpless Jews in the city. The Jewish population was always ready to respond to a call for help or to take active measures to solve problems. Within a matter of about two years, the Germans and their helpers managed to deracinate the entire community and its institutions. Most of the Jews of Krosno were murdered in the Belzec concentration camp. Today there is no trace of Jewish life in Krosno except for the Jewish cemetery. This book serves as the memorial to the Jewish community of Krosno. It should be of interest to descendants and researchers of this community. Описание: The Jewish community of the city of Kleczew came into existence in the sixteenth century. It remained large and strong throughout the next four hundred years, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it formed between 40 and 60% of the total population. The Kahal of Kleczew acquired its autonomy in the eighteenth century, and formed a separate Jewish quarter of the municipal infrastructure, possessing a synagogue, a cemetery, a ritual bath, and a cheder. In the years 1918-1939, Jewish life in Kleczew developed strongly political-social aspects, with branches of multiple political groups and organizations forming and attracting members. After the outbreak of war in 1939, Kleczew’s Jewish inhabitants were the first victims of the Nazis’ mass extermination campaign, murdered between September and November 1941. This edited volume presents and explores the history of this complex, long-lived Jewish community.

Описание:

In a book with a bold new view of medieval Jewish history, written in a style accessible to nonspecialists and students as well as to scholars in the field, Marina Rustow changes our understanding of the origins and nature of heresy itself. Scholars have long believed that the Rabbanites and Qaraites, the two major Jewish groups under Islamic rule, split decisively in the tenth century and from that time forward the minority Qaraites were deemed a heretical sect. Qaraites affirmed a right to decide matters of Jewish law free from centuries of rabbinic interpretation; the Rabbanites, in turn, claimed an unbroken chain of scholarly tradition.Rustow draws heavily on the Cairo Geniza, a repository of papers found in a Rabbanite synagogue, to show that despite the often fierce arguments between the groups, they depended on each other for political and financial support and cooperated in both public and private life. This evidence of remarkable interchange leads Rustow to the conclusion that the accusation of heresy appeared sporadically, in specific contexts, and that the history of permanent schism was the invention of polemicists on both sides. Power shifted back and forth fluidly across what later commentators, particularly those invested in the rabbinic claim to exclusive authority, deemed to have been sharply drawn boundaries.Heresy and the Politics of Community paints a portrait of a more flexible medieval Eastern Mediterranean world than has previously been imagined and demonstrates a new understanding of the historical meanings of charges of heresy against communities of faith. Historians of premodern societies will find that, in her fresh approach to medieval Jewish and Islamic culture, Rustow illuminates a major issue in the history of religions.
