Описание: Over the course of his career, Luther H. Martin has primarily produced articles rather than monographs. This approach to publication has given him the opportunity to experiment with different methodological approaches to an academic study of religion, with updates to and different interpretations of his field of historical specialization, namely Hellenistic religions, the subject of his only monograph (1987). The contents of this collected volume represent Martin's shift from comparative studies, to socio-political studies, to scientific studies of religion, and especially to the cognitive science of religion. He currently considers the latter to be the most viable approach for a scientific study of religion within the academic context of a modern research university. The twenty-five contributions collected in this volume are selected from over one hundred essays, articles, and book chapters published over a long and industrious career and are representative of Martin's work over the past two decades.

Considers the cultural positioning and impact of dialect writing and investigates the mechanics of how authors produce dialect writing
Analysing examples from 18th century literary texts through to 21st century social media, this is the first comprehensive collection to explore dialect writing in the North of England. The book also considers broad questions about dialect writing in general: What is it? Who does it? What types of dialect writing exist? How can linguists interpret it?
Bringing together a wide range of contributors, the book investigates everything from the cultural positioning and impact of dialect writing to the mechanics of how authors produce dialect spellings (and what this can tell us about the structure of the dialects represented). The book features a number of case studies, focusing on dialect writing from all over the North of England, considering a wide range of types of text, including dialect poetry, translations into dialect, letters, tweets, direct speech in novels, humorous localised volumes, written reports of conversations and cartoons in local newspapers.

Описание: Neville Chamberlain's policy of appeasing Hitler's Germany has been widely condemned. However, both historians and politicians have been divided about the viability of alternative courses of action. Andrew David Stedman's illuminating new study of British foreign policy before the Second World War systematically analyses the various alternatives to appeasement, from isolationism to collective security to outright war, and examines their origins, risks and feasibility. It surveys the advocates of other strategies, including key thinkers and decision-makers such as Churchill, Eden, Amery, Beaverbrook and Halifax, and outlines the complexities of the decisions they faced - a subject that has previously been largely overlooked.Marking a valuable new contribution to appeasement historiography, this is the first work to synthesise all the alternatives available to Chamberlain and outline policy debate within the British government. Stedman provides a vigorous analysis of Chamberlain's assessment of each rival policy and shows why he ultimately opted for a policy of appeasement. Contributing to debates on the use of appeasement in the modern world, this book will be essential reading for historians of World War II and the twentieth century, as well as scholars of International Relations.

Описание: The Habsburg Empire often features in scholarship as a historical example of how language diversity and linguistic competence were essential to the functioning of the imperial state. Focusing critically on the urban-rural divide, on the importance of status for multilingual competence, on local governments, schools, the army and the urban public sphere, and on linguistic policies and practices in transition, this collective volume provides further evidence for both the merits of how language diversity was managed in Austria-Hungary and the problems and contradictions that surrounded those practices. The book includes contributions by Pieter M. Judson, Marta Verginella, Rok Stergar, Anamarija Lukic, Carl Bethke, Irina Marin, Agoston Berecz, Csilla Fedinec, Istvan Csernicsko, Matthaus Wehowski, Jan Fellerer, and Jeroen van Drunen.
