In 1921, Miguel Asin Palacios published a pioneering book, The Islamic Eschatology in the Divine Comedy, in which he argued that Dante’s poem, the summa of Christian Middle Ages, had to be read on the backdrop of Islamic lore. The idea that the ‘Tuscan afterworld’ could have Quranic sources triggered one of the most heated literary debates of the 20th century, with both sides evincing nationalistic and cultural biases. The first section of the book analyzes this contentious episode of literary criticism from a historical standpoint: the post-WW2 decolonization period and the emergence of the Mediterranean as an hermeneutical framework of interpretation. It focuses on the multifaceted biography of Enrico Cerulli (1898–1988), a governor of Italian colonies and a scholar of Somali and Ethiopian studies, whose philological works are landmarks of the debate on Dante and Islam. The second part of the monograph presents some novel lines of inquiry on the reception, interpretation, and appropriation of the Comedy in the early-modern period. In this context, surprising intersections with Islamic sources materialize. The overarching goal of the book is to test the Mediterranean as a productive concept in the interpretation of Dante's work.
Описание: Holy Treasure and Sacred Song explores the complex interplay between relic cults and the liturgy in medieval Tuscany. Drawing on documentary, literary and visual evidence rarely considered together, it reveals that liturgical texts, music, and ritual were integral to the clergy`s well-informed promotion of saints buried in their churches.

Описание: This book gives a fuller picture than has hitherto been attempted of the variety of Britons who became residents of Florence between the end of the Napoleonic wars and the absorption of Tuscany into the kingdom of Italy. Many of them were leisured, and some aristocratic; a few were writers or artists; the British clergy and physicians who ministered to them were gentlemen. Many others were shopkeepers, merchants and even engineers. Some achieved a more profound knowledge of the country (and its language) than others, but all were affected to some degree by the momentous events which led to Italian unification.

Описание:
From the dawn of ancient civilization to modern times, the Mediterranean Sea looms in the imagination of the people living on its shores as a space of myth and adventure, of conquest and confrontation, of migration and settlement, of religious ferment and conflict. Since its waters linked the earliest empires and centers of civilization, the Mediterranean generated globalization and multiculturalism. It gave birth to the three great monotheisms—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—religions of the book, of the land and of the sea. Over the centuries, the Mediterranean witnessed the rise and fall of some of the oldest civilizations in the world. And as these cultures succeeded one another, century after century, each left a tantalizing imprint on later societies. Like the ancient artifacts constantly washed up from its depths, the lost cities and monuments abandoned in its deserts or sunk beneath its waves, Mediterranean topography and culture is a chaotic present spread over a palimpsest many layers deep.
No region grappled more continuously with, nor was more deeply marked by Mediterranean culture and history than Europe. Europe’s religions, its languages, its learning, its laws, its sense of history, even its food and agriculture, all derived from Greek, Roman, and—in the Middle Ages—Muslim and Jewish cultures. The essays in this book lay bare the dynamics of cultural confrontation between Europe and the Mediterranean world from medieval to modern times. One momentous result of this engagement was the creation of vernacular languages and the diverse body of literature, history, and art arising from them. The achievements of the arts reveal—to borrow a geological metaphor—the grinding tectonic pates of Mediterranean cultures and languages butting up against pre-existing European strata.

Описание:
This study uses critical theory to investigate the history of how people have thought about the antipodes--the places and people on the other side of the world--from ancient Greece to present-day literature and digital media. Taking into account maps, letters, book illustrations, travel writing, poetry, and drama, Goldie reveals that the history of the idea of the antipodes might be seen as different modes or discourses: mathematical and geographical in the earliest era, cartographical and kinetic in the medieval period, social and sexual in the Early Modern, sartorial and littoral in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and bodily and humorous in the latest era. Using the theories of Eve Sedgwick, Michel Foucault, Epeli Hau'ofa, and others, this book extends postcolonialism's historical scope and challenges the theory's approaches and perceptions: center-periphery, East-West, and mimicry.
