Focusing on the role of Soul music for the popularization of the Black Power movement in Afro-Latin American contexts in the 1960s and 1970s, this book aims to contribute to a better understanding of the networks of solidarity that connected geographically and linguistically distant afro-diasporic communities in their struggles for emancipation and against the diverse manifestations of white supremacy that have shaped societies throughout the Americas in the 20th century. Drawing on field research and interviews with musicians, DJs, and activists in New York, Rio de Janeiro and Panama, this multi-sited study traces the inter-American flows of Soul music in diverse Afro-Latin American contexts. Crossing boundaries between African American and Latin American Studies this book opens new perspectives to scholars of Black Transnationalism, music and social movements in the African diaspora of the Americas.

Powell situates this cultural history within larger global and domestic sociohistorical junctures that link African American and South Asian diasporic communities in the United States. In The Geographies of Social Movements Ulrich Oslender proposes a critical place perspective to examine the activism of black communities in the lowland rain forest of Colombia's Pacific Coast region. Drawing on extensive ethnographic fieldwork in and around the town of Guapi, Oslender examines how the work of local community councils, which have organized around newly granted ethnic and land rights since the early 1990s, is anchored to space and place. Exploring how residents' social relationships are entangled with the region's rivers, streams, swamps, rain, and tides, Oslender argues that this "aquatic space"—his conceptualization of the mutually constitutive relationships between people and their rain forest environment—provides a local epistemology that has shaped the political process. Oslender demonstrates that social mobilization among Colombia's Pacific Coast black communities is best understood as emerging out of their place-based identity and environmental imaginaries. He argues that the critical place perspective proposed accounts more fully for the multiple, multiscalar, rooted, and networked experiences within social movements.
For centuries, slaveholding was a commonplace in Brazil among both whites and people of color. Abolition was only achieved in 1888, in an unprecedented, turbulent political process. How was the Abolitionist movement (1879-1888) able to bring an end to a form of labor that was traditionally perceived as both indispensable and entirely legitimate? How were the slaveholders who dominated Brazil's constitutional monarchy compelled to agree to it?
To answer these questions, we must understand the elite political world that abolitionism challenged and changed--and how the Abolitionist movement evolved in turn. The Sacred Cause analyzes the relations between the movement, its Afro-Brazilian following, and the evolving response of the parliamentary regime in Rio de Janeiro. Jeffrey Needell highlights the significance of racial identity and solidarity to the Abolitionist movement, showing how Afro-Brazilian leadership, organization, and popular mobilization were critical to the movement's identity, nature, and impact.
