Описание: Kousser builds on recent scholarship to offer a unique analysis of Hellenistic and Roman sculptures. Unlike other books, she focuses on the reception rather than the creation of works of art, giving readings of important monuments integrating their analysis with less well-studied ones such as German provincial relics.

Описание: Fourteen historians and archaeologists come together to tackle the role of the western Mediterranean in what is conventionally known as `Hellenistic` history. Their essays challenge the centrality of the East in the `Hellenistic World`, the focus on Rome in accounts of the West, and the concept of the `Hellenistic` itself.

Описание: A monograph concerning the sanctuary of Dodona and its role in the political context of Epirus might be a remarkable input. Located in a region that has received more interest in the last years, this book attempts to analyze the way the shrine evolved in connection with the political developments of its surrounding region. The study employs a diachronic perspective and emphasizes throughout that religion was a dynamic, not a static, phenomenon. The chronology of this research extends from the Archaic to Hellenistic periods. Its key novelty is that it offers an entirely new holistic approach to an ancient religious site by considering its polyfunctionality. At the same time that it presents a state-of-the-art analysis of the shrine of Dodona and contributes with a new theory concerning the function of some structures located in the sacred area, it also highlights the close connection between a settlement and its region. For this reason, the aim is to become a reference work that allows continuing the current trend of studies focused on Epirus, a territory traditionally considered as secondary.

Описание: The first all-round history of the Peloponnesian states after Philip of Macedon`s conquest of southern Greece. While offering a new narrative, it enriches it by exploring politics, economies, and landscapes, and shows how the Peloponnese worked as a network of city-states which remained the primary focus of identity and loyalty.
This book offers the most comprehensive and updated history of Ancient Greek literature from Homer to Late Antiquity. Its clear structure and detailed presentation of Greek authors and their works as well as literary phenomena and genres makes it an indispensable reference work for all those interested in Greek Antiquity, particularly well-suited for use in the classroom.
Описание: On the Agora traces the evolution of the main public square of the Greek polis for the six centuries from the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC to the height of the Roman Empire and the Herulian invasion of Greece in 267 AD. Drawing on literary, epigraphic and, especially, archaeological evidence, the book takes a comparative approach to consider how the layout and function of agoras in cities throughout Greece changed during centuries that witnessed far reaching transformations in culture, society and political life. The book challenges the popular view of the post-Classical agora as characterised by decline, makes important arguments about how we use evidence to understand ancient public spaces and proposes many new interpretations of individual sites.
Описание: The purpose of this volume is to investigate scholastic culture in the Hellenistic and Roman eras, with a particular focus on ancient book and material culture as well as scholarship beyond Greek authors and the Greek language. Accordingly, one of the major contributions of this work is the inclusion of multiple perspectives and its contributors engage not only with elements of Greek scholastic culture, but also bring Greek ideas into conversation with developing Latin scholarship (see chapters by Dickey, Nicholls, Marshall) and the perspective of a minority culture (i.e., Jewish authors) (see chapters by Hezser, Adams). This multicultural perspective is an important next step in the discussion of ancient scholarship and this volume provides a starting point for future inquiries.
