Описание: The term `edge city` describes the rapid growth of urban centres at the edge of established cities. Widely discussed in the US, very little has been written about European edge cities. This book gives a comparative analysis of examples in Greece, Spain, Paris, Finland and the UK, with a theoretical analysis of edge cities and post-suburban Europe.

Описание: This book challenges the perception that shaping neighborhoods and districts is a top down benevolent activity by inspired planners; rather, the book sees this activity as a constant resolution of tensions or friction that citizens experience and the physical city structure exhibits. Out of this pragmatic dialectic emerge 'patters' which, when applied and codified, respond to inevitably semi-permanent regional cultural realities. These patterns endure until a new culture, understood as the sum total of all human activity of production, provision, defense and exchange, appears to take hold. A new cycle of adaptation and mutations sets in until the fresh tensions and frictions are resolved. In this constant spiral of evolutionary readjustment, this book adds a new pattern--the Fused Grid--that resolves contemporary pressure points such as citizen health, well-being, multi-modal mobility, Green House Gas emissions, water preservation, alienating anonymity and traffic safety. By synthesizing piece-meal responses, it creates a unified, complete, contemporary model that displaces the ones in current vogue that are taken for granted. This new pattern rests on cutting-edge theoretical and empirical studies each of which examined special aspects of current stresses, induced or endured by citizens or their environment. It catalyzes much of this available research around the poles of neighborhood and district network configurations that produce a fully functional and enjoyable contemporary city environment while minding its environmental footprint. To substantiate its strengths, the book examines case studies where the potential for the model to deliver on its intended outcomes becomes fully evident. This book is a worthy, stimulating read for every planner and advocate of well-functioning, healthy communities.
In From the Outside In, Carolyn T. Adams addresses the role of suburban elites in setting development agendas for urban municipalities and their larger metropolitan regions. She shows how major nongovernmental, nonmarket institutions are taking responsibility for reshaping Philadelphia, led by suburban and state elites who sit on boards and recruit like-minded suburban colleagues to join them. In Philadelphia and other American cities, Third Sector organizations have built and expanded hospitals, universities, research centers, performing arts venues, museums, parks, and waterfronts, creating whole new districts that are expanding outward from the city's historic downtown. The author draws on three decades of scholarship on Philadelphia and her personal experience in the city’s nonprofit world to argue that suburban elites have recognized the importance of the central city to their own future and have intervened to redevelop central city land and institutions. Suburban interests and state allies have channeled critical investments in downtown development and K–12 education. Adams contrasts those suburban priorities with transportation infrastructure and neighborhood redevelopment, two policy domains in which suburban elites display less strategic engagement. From the Outside In is a rich examination of the promise and difficulty of governance that is increasingly distinct from elected government and thus divorced from the usual means of democratic control within an urban municipality.

Описание: With an increase in urban crises arising from a growing population and rising affluence, and the inadequacy of conventional theories to predict the future states of the environment, Resources for the Future laid out a series of studies on the resource base of the urban environment. Originally published in 1968, this particular study examines the increase of apartment construction in the suburb including the extent of construction and the factors behind construction such as population demographics, highway construction and national and local land use policy. Neutze makes comparisons of U.S. metropolitan areas to draw conclusions on new policies which the government should consider in relation to the urban land market. This title will be of interest to students of Environmental Studies.
Описание: The book takes a critical social science perspective to identify political, economic, social, and environmental issues related to suburban infrastructures. Cases highlight similarities and differences between suburban infrastructure conditions encountered in the Global North and Global South.

Описание: Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy is one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. Sustainable energy access planning (SEAP) plays a vital role when it comes to ensuring energy access for poor households particularly in Nepal’s Pyuthan district. SEAP identifies the needed resources and investments for sustainable energy in the district. This case study, supported by the Asian Development Bank, presents the application of a SEAP framework for developing cost-effective energy plans for Pyuthan district. It also highlights the benefits of access to cleaner energy in terms of social well-being, reduction in the emission of local pollutants and greenhouse gas, and reducing energy inequality.
Описание: This book investigates how housing and transport policy have played their role in creating these `transit deserts`, and what impact race has upon those likely to be affected. Diane Jones uses research from New Orleans, Baltimore and Chicago to explore the forces at work in these situations, as well as proposing potential solutions.

Описание: This new and expanded edition builds upon the first edition’s accessible and comprehensive overview of the interdisciplinary field of sustainability. The focus is on furnishing solutions and equipping the student with both conceptual understanding and technical skills for the workplace. Each chapter explores one aspect of the field, first introducing concepts and presenting issues, then supplying tools for working toward solutions. Techniques for management and measurement as well as case studies from around the world are provided. The second edition includes a complete update of the text, with increased coverage of major topics including the Anthropocene; complexity; resilience; environmental ethics; governance; the IPCC’s latest findings on climate change; Sustainable Development Goals; and new thinking on native species and novel ecosystems. Chapters include further reading and discussion questions. The book is supported by a companion website with links, detailed reading lists, glossary, and additional case studies, together with projects, research problems, and group activities, all of which focus on real-world problem solving of sustainability issues. The textbook is designed to be used by undergraduate college and university students in sustainability degree programs and other programs in which sustainability is taught.

Описание: Considered to be sub-ordinated and sub-prime to the city, suburban areas receive little attention by researchers and designers. However, it is the rapidly growing areas outside central cities that pose the biggest questions of the urban millennium: How can the scattered patchwork of urban areas and social spaces linked by networks of highways and public transportation function as a sustainable and livable urban environment? Answering this question requires understanding suburban spaces as heterogeneous urban areas with distinct local characteristics, qualities, and problems. Following this path, Variations of Suburbanism explores the formation, characteristics, and trends of suburban areas all over the world. It provides insights on common features and differences of suburban governance, design, and infrastructure and discusses strategies to understand and design suburban areas in an increasingly suburbanizing world.
