Описание: Until now, scholarly analysis of Elizabethan processions has always regarded them as having been successful in their function as propaganda, and has always found them to have effectively "won over" the common people-that group of the population at whom they were chiefly aimed. Both her Royal entries and progresses were regarded as effective public relations exercises, the population gaining access to the Queen and thus being encouraged to remain loyal subjects. This book represents a new approach to this subject by investigating whether this was actually the case - that is, whether the common people were actually won over by these spectacular rituals. By examining original documents that have thus far been ignored, as well as re-examining others from the perspective of the common people, the book casts a new light on Elizabethan processions.

Описание:
The rosary has long been practiced as a way for Christians to get closer to Mary, the mother of Christ, who has a central place in their spiritual lives. Yet this practice is also considered by some as an irreconcilable cause for division, claiming that the rosary is tantamount to idolatry or blasphemy.
The Rosary: Blasphemous or Pleasing to God? offers a way for Christians to reach as much consensus as possible on the subject of the rosary, a practice many Christians use when relating to Mary. Author Roberto Irizarry explains how the rosary is both understood by its proponents and misunderstood by those who consider it pure idolatry, showing especially how Christians who practice the rosary relate differently to Mary than they do to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Ultimately he appeals to Christians of all denominations, urging understanding and unity instead of division.
While the rosary might still be a divisive practice, Christians of all traditions can learn more about it, its history, and its meaning, with prayerful, sincere, and well-informed consideration on both sides of the issue. Honoring Mary can be a central part of a believer's spiritual life, and understanding how Christians relate to Mary will hopefully draw us closer to the oneness of faith that all Christians want deep inside.
Описание: Many of the wars of the Late Republic were largely civil conflicts. There was, therefore, a tension between the traditional expectation that triumphs should be celebrated for victories over foreign enemies and the need of the great commanders to give full expression to their prestige and charisma, and to legitimize their power. Triumphs in the Age of Civil War rethinks the nature and the character of the phenomenon of civil war during the Late Republic. At the same time it focuses on a key feature of the Roman socio-political order, the triumph, and argues that a commander could in practice expect to triumph after a civil war victory if it could also be represented as being over a foreign enemy, even if the principal opponent was clearly Roman. Significantly, the civil aspect of the war did not have to be denied. Carsten Hjort Lange provides the first study to consider the Roman triumph during the age of civil war, and argues that the idea of civil war as "normal" reflects the way civil war permeated the politics and society of the Late Roman Republic.

Описание: Blasphemous Modernism argues that blasphemy is a signal mode of modernist literary expression. Reading a diverse range of poets (Mina Loy, Langston Hughes) and novelists (James Joyce, Djuna Barnes, Salman Rushdie), Pinkerton shows how these writers forged the literature of modernism from the idiom of blasphemy.

Описание:
Rewritten in their entirety, these blasphemous new and old testaments are an attempt at a reversal of morals--a dialectical approach to the truth in which the opposite is mirrored against the established with the goal of producing a new transcendent truth uniting the two contradictory views.
." . . a means of challenging zealots to read their own holy books and possibly force them to consider the harder questions and contradictions contained therein, the author decided to rewrite the Bible. Years of indefatigable work later, The Blasphemous Bible was created. All the many stories, verses, and 'facts' contained in the Bible are here rewritten with no apology for the obvious wickedness, cruelties, atrocities, and overall unbelievable fallacies it may be said to chronicle."
