Описание: This thoroughly revised, second edition of Nature and Nurture in Mental Disorders, argues that, in fact, the "nature versus nurture" dichotomy is unnecessary. Instead, the author posits a biopsychosocial model that acknowledges the role an individual`s predisposing genetic factors, interacting with environmental stressors, play in the etiology of many mental disorders.
Описание: Genocide is the deliberate destruction of a national, ethnic, or religious group. While this has occurred throughout history, one of the most well-known genocides is the holocaust of WW II -- Nazi efforts to eliminate millions of Jews, while also persecuting Poles, Rom (Gypsies), and other groups.
Before them, the Armenians suffered a similar fate under Turkey. More recent examples of genocidal action are the “ethnic cleansing” that took place under the Serbs in Bosnia and Kosovo; the Hutu slaughter of the Tutsi minority in Rwanda in 1994; the attempt by the Islamic State in Iraq to eliminate the Yazidis; and the mass killing and expulsion of the Rohingya in Myanmar. China’s attempt to erase the culture of the Uighurs is a case of ethnocide -- a genocide component that exterminates national cultures. In the America’s, too, genocidal campaigns were waged against Native American peoples.
Ancient and modern documents are examined in-depth throughout these two volumes, including:
Holocaust testimonies
The Evian Conference
World Jewish Conference
Bosnian War Cables
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
Excerpts from the Genocide Archive of Rwanda Collection
Trial transcripts
Political speeches
In-depth chapters provide a thorough commentary and analysis of each primary source document, often reprinted in its entirety. Commentary includes a Summary, Overview, Defining Moment, Author Biography, detailed Document Analysis, and discussion of Essential Themes.
Designed for high school and college students, the goal of these volumes is to carefully study genocide throughout world history, to give students a frame of reference on how to understand and comprehend what has happened in our past, and what to be aware of in the future.
Описание: In this incisive study, Sarah Ehlers returns to the Depression-era United States in order to unsettle longstanding ideas about poetry and emerging approaches to poetics. By bringing to light a range of archival materials and theories about poetry that emerged on the 1930s left, Ehlers reimagines the historical formation of modern poetics. Offering new and challenging readings of prominent figures such as Langston Hughes and Muriel Rukeyser, and uncovering the contributions of lesser-known writers such as Jacques Roumain, Genevieve Taggard, and Martha Millet, Ehlers illuminates an aesthetically and geographically diverse matrix of schools and movements. Resisting the dismissal of thirties left writing as mere propaganda, the book reveals how communist-affiliated poets experimented with poetic modes—such as lyric and documentary—and genres, including songs, ballads, and nursery rhymes in ways that challenged existing frameworks for understanding the relationships among poetic form, political commitment, and historical transformation. As Ehlers shows, Depression left movements and their international connections are crucial for understanding both the history of modern poetry and the role of poetic thought in conceptualizing historical change.

Описание: Jonathan Bryan (1708-88) became one of colonial Georgia`s richest, most powerful men. Bryan`s contemporaries, in terms of their large holdings of land and slaves, were markedly traditional and conservative. As Alan Gallay shows, Bryan was different. Paternalistic and relatively open minded, Bryan contemplated religious, social, political, and economic ideas that other planters refused to consider.
The 1783 Treaty of Paris, which officially recognized the United States as a sovereign republic, also doubled the territorial girth of the original thirteen colonies. The fledgling nation now stretched from the coast of Maine to the Mississippi River and up to the Great Lakes. With this dramatic expansion, argues author Bethel Saler, the United States simultaneously became a postcolonial republic and gained a domestic empire. The competing demands of governing an empire and a republic inevitably collided in the early American West. The Settlers' Empire traces the first federal endeavor to build states wholesale out of the Northwest Territory, a process that relied on overlapping colonial rule over Euro-American settlers and the multiple Indian nations in the territory. These entwined administrations involved both formal institution building and the articulation of dominant cultural customs that, in turn, served also to establish boundaries of citizenship and racial difference.
In the Northwest Territory, diverse populations of newcomers and Natives struggled over the region's geographical and cultural definition in areas such as religion, marriage, family, gender roles, and economy. The success or failure of state formation in the territory thus ultimately depended on what took place not only in the halls of government but also on the ground and in the everyday lives of the region's Indians, Francophone creoles, Euro- and African Americans, and European immigrants. In this way, The Settlers' Empire speaks to historians of women, gender, and culture, as well as to those interested in the early national state, the early West, settler colonialism, and Native history.

Описание: "Exhaustively researched and admirably argued, this book analyzes the crucial role played by the federal circuit courts in bridging the diversity of the new nation and the need to establish a unified body of national law. It also throws important new light on the internal operation of the Marshall Court. A significant contribution to our understanding of the federal court system of the early republic." Prof. R. Kent Newmyer, University of Connecticut School of Law
..". as a guide to a critical period of US history, legal as well as economic and political, and to help in understanding how the fledgling state across the Atlantic has evolved, it is compulsory reading." Law Society Gazette
While scholars have rightly focused on the importance of the landmark opinions of the United States Supreme Court and its Chief Justice, John Marshall, in the rise in influence of the Court in the Early Republic, the crucial role of the circuit courts in the development of a uniform system of federal law across the nation has largely been ignored. This book highlights the contribution of four Associate Justices-Washington, Livingston, Story, and Thompson-as presiding judges of their respective circuit courts during the Marshall era in order to establish that in those early years federal law grew from the 'inferior courts' upwards rather than down from the Supreme Court. It covers 1800 mainly circuit opinions and over 2000 original letters, which reveal the sources of law upon which the justices drew, and their efforts through correspondence to achieve consistency across the circuits. The documents examined present insights into momentous social, political, and economic issues facing the Union, and they demonstrate how these justices dealt with them on circuit. Particular attention is paid to the different ways in which each justice contributed to the shaping of United States law on circuit and on the Court and, in the case of Justices Livingston and Thompson, also during their time on the New York State Supreme Court.
