Описание: Global Crime and Justice offers a truly transnational examination of both deviance and social controls around the world. Unlike comparative textbooks detailing the criminal justice systems of a few select nations, or cataloging types of international crimes that span multiple legal jurisdictions, Global Crime and Justice provides a critical and integrated investigation into the nature of crime and how different societies react to it. The book first details various types of international crime, including genocide, war crimes, international drug and weapons smuggling, terrorism, slavery, and human trafficking. The second half covers international law, international crime control, the use of martial law, and the challenges of balancing public order with human and civil rights. Global Crime and Justice is suitable for use in criminology and criminal justice departments, as well as in political science, international relations, and global studies programs. It will appeal to all who seek an academically rigorous and comprehensive treatment of the international and transnational issues of crime and social order.

Описание:
This new textbook will provide students of criminology with a better understanding of criminal justice policy and, in doing so, offers a framework for analysing the social, economic and political processes that shape its creation. The book adopts a policy-oriented approach to criminal justice, connecting the study of criminology to the wider study of British government, public administration and politics.
Throughout the book the focus is on key debates and competing perspectives on how policy decisions are made. Recognising that contemporary criminal justice policymakers operate in a highly politicised, public arena under the gaze of an ever-increasing variety of groups, organisations and individuals who have a stake in a particular policy issue, the book explores how and why these people seek to influence policymaking. It also recognises that criminal policy differs from other areas of public policy, as policy decisions affect the liberty and freedoms of citizens. Throughout, key ideas and debates are linked to wider sociology, criminology and social policy theory.
Key features include:
a foreword by Tim Newburn, leading criminologist and author of Criminology (2nd Edition, 2013),
a critical and informed analysis of the concepts, ideas and institutional practices that shape criminal justice policy making,
an exploration of the relationship between criminal justice and wider social policy,
a critical analysis of the debate about how and why behaviour becomes defined as requiring a criminal justice solution,
a range of case studies, tasks, seminar questions and suggested further readings to keep the student engaged.
This text is perfect for students taking modules in criminology; criminal justice; and social and public policy, as well as those taking courses on criminal and administrative law.

Описание: EU Criminal Justice and the Challenges of Diversity examines how questions of cultural difference between Member States` legal traditions are being constructed, addressed and resolved in the development of the European Union`s area of freedom, security and justice. Comparative and European lawyers from eight European countries come together to identify problems and suggest ways forward.
Описание: The concept of restorative justice, which focuses on extinguishing the social conflict caused by criminal offense, has been received with growing interest on the part of both legislators and specialists in legal sciences throughout the world. This publication answers the question to what extent the classic model of criminal justice (including its fundamental principles and miscellany of penal measures) is able to meet the challenges posed by that concept. The doubts indicated in the study have been illustrated by normative provisions taken from Polish criminal legislation.

Описание: Whereas previous studies of legitimacy and trust have mostly dealt with procedural justice and the police, this book focuses on other crucial understudied aspects of legitimacy within criminal law, policy and criminal justice. The chapters expand and develop current criminological, legal and socio-legal research by addressing conceptions of legitimacy linked to criminal law norms, criminalisation and sanctioning; by examining EU legal and policy aspects of the phenomenon; and by exploring some specific court-related issues of legitimacy and trust, hitherto neglected. With contributions from across the EU, this interdisciplinary collection presents a valuable discussion on the importance of trust in legal institutions of modern democracies and suggests ideas for future research in this area to challenge ways of thinking about legitimacy.

Описание: In the late nineteenth century, progressive reformers recoiled at the prospect of the justice system punishing children as adults. Advocating that children's inherent innocence warranted fundamentally different treatment, reformers founded the nation's first juvenile court in Chicago in 1899. Yet amidst an influx of new African American arrivals to the city during the Great Migration, notions of inherent childhood innocence and juvenile justice were circumscribed by race. In documenting how blackness became a marker of criminality that overrode the potential protections the status of ""child"" could have bestowed, Tera Eva Agyepong shows the entanglements between race and the state's transition to a more punitive form of juvenile justice.
This important study expands the narrative of racialized criminalization in America, revealing that these patterns became embedded in a justice system originally intended to protect children. In doing so, Agyepong also complicates our understanding of the nature of migration and what it meant to be black and living in Chicago in the early twentieth century.
Описание: Race and Criminal Justice History: Rhetoric, Politics, and Policy helps students understand the complicated connection between the criminal justice system and the politics of race in America. Through socio-legal, socio-psychological and socio-historical analysis of racism and the history of American political rhetoric on crime, the text provides a foundation for understanding how African Americans are perceived in modern society and how long-standing negative perceptions have influenced their interactions with the criminal justice system. The text begins with a discussion on how criminal justice policy and perceptions of criminality are related to African American disproportionate incarceration. Through a socio-psychological lens, it explains how African Americans are stereotyped as criminals, as well as how the biological, sociological, and psychological science of racial bias, prejudice, and racism can influence police interactions. Later chapters provide a detailed and in-depth review of how antebellum and postbellum politics defending states’ rights, the adoption of Jim Crow by the Supreme Court, presidential level political rhetoric regarding Black inferiority, criminality and segregation, as well as the use of the criminal justice system as means of social control of former slaves, all form the context for understanding the development of the modern criminal justice policies implemented during the presidencies of Johnson through Trump. Thorough in historical and psychological analysis, and timely in light of current social and political events, Race and Criminal Justice History is an ideal text for criminal justice, sociology, psychology, social work, political science, public administration, public policy, and race and ethnic studies courses.

Описание: Designed to inspire conversation and critical thinking, Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice presents students with a carefully selected collection of readings regarding timely and relevant issues within the criminal justice discipline. Readers are challenged to develop informed opinions on individual topics and then take a step back to consider all of the issues addressed to better understand the complex challenges of working within the criminal justice system.
Over the course of eight chapters, students read illuminating selections regarding the death penalty, police conduct, the delicate balance of privacy and security, mental illness, hate crime, racial disparity, drug policy, and mass incarceration. Throughout, readers are encouraged not to take sides on a particular issue, but rather to address the challenge with realistic, practical thought and develop strategies for facing these challenges head on.
The second edition includes new readings on the internet, self-control, and judicial override in capital cases. Additionally, it features a new focus on the topic of hate crimes, seeking to demonstrate that hate is a complex topic, as well as how it can influence social interactions and crime.
Contemporary Issues in Criminal Justice is an engaging and thought-provoking anthology that is well suited for undergraduate and graduate courses in criminal justice.

Описание: This ground-breaking collection dares to take the next step in the advancement of an autonomous, inter-disciplinary restorative justice field of study. It brings together criminology, social psychology, legal theory, neuroscience, affect-script psychology, sociology, forensic mental health, political sciences, psychology and positive psychology to articulate for the first time a psychological concept of restorative justice. To this end, the book studies the power structures of the restorative justice movement, the very psychology, motivations and emotions of the practitioners who implement it as well as the drivers of its theoreticians and researchers. Furthermore, it examines the strengths and weakness of our own societies and the communities that are called to participate as parties in restorative justice. Their own biases, hunger for power and control, fears and hopes are investigated. The psychology and dynamics between those it aims to reach as well as those who are funding it, including policy makers and politicians, are looked into. All these questions lead to creating an understanding of the psychology of restorative justice. The book is essential reading for academics, researchers, policymakers, practitioners and campaigners.
