In an era where churches in America are in decline, this book offers a clear path and hope for the future. using the Episcopal Church as an example of a Mainline Protestant Domination that has faced a half century of steep decline, the author shows where the church has gone astray, what has contributed to the continued losses, a strong critique of the leadership as well as a way for the people to take back their church and grow it.
This book is a must have for anyone who truly cares about the future of American Protestant Churches especially the Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational Churches, who all face the exact same fate.
Delving into how to compete for peoples attention in the modern age, how to modernize your parish, reach out to those who have left and attract new members, this is a "how to" for congregational growth.
This compelling narrative tackles the modern day issues that divide our country: conservative vs liberal, race issues, sexuality and other third rail controversies that have torn apart the church. Most importantly the book offers real solutions for how the church should deal with them so as to be a big tent for all people.
In addition to the "how to" nature of this book, the author travels to and examines many parishes in the Episcopal Church from the largest in the denomination, St. Martin's Houston, home of the Bush family to St. Bart's on Park Ave in New York City. With interviews ranging from Fox News personality Tucker Carlson to Telemundo's Fr. Alberto Cutie of Florida, this book examines all angles.
Brutally honest, insightful and reflective, this book will be a quick read and easy to implement in your own parish. Nothing coming from the leadership of any of these denominations has worked, so if you care about the future of Mainline Protestants and especially The Episcopal Church, then this is for you
Caswell Cooke is not a priest or minister, never went to seminary and holds no theological degrees. This is a grass roots way to make a difference and get results. The future might just be a little brighter with The Death and Resurrection of The Episcopal Church: How to Save a Church in Decline.

Criteria of authenticity, whose roots go back to before the pioneering work of Albert Schweitzer, have become a unifying feature of the so-called Third Quest for the Historical Jesus, finding a prominent and common place in the research of otherwise differing scholars. More recently, however, scholars from different methodological frameworks have expressed discontent with this approach to the historical Jesus. In the past five years, these expressions of discontent have reached a fever pitch.
The internationally renowned authors of this book examine the nature of this new debate and present the findings in a cohesive way aimed directly at making the coalface of Historical Jesus research accessible to undergraduates and seminary students. The book's larger ramifications as a thorough end to the Third Quest will provide a pressure valve for thousands of scholars who view historical Jesus studies as outmoded and misguided. This book has the potential to guide Jesus studies beyond the Third Quest and demand to be consulted by any scholar who discards, adopts, or adapts historical criteria.
Описание: A collection of essays, scriptural analysis, and personal reflections featuring leading Christian and Muslim scholars who explore the meaning of death, resurrection, and human destiny within their religious traditions.
Life is hard . . . then you die. It's as simple as that. Dead bodies stay dead.
So in this modern, scientific age, how can any reasonable person possibly believe that Jesus actually rose from the dead? Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy turned out to be myths. How is Jesus's Resurrection any different? How can there possibly be any credible evidence for an event that happened two thousand years ago?
The resurrection of Jesus is the most important event in the history of the world-if it's true. If Jesus did rise, then he is God, the ultimate reality itself. In him, you can find the meaning of life, the secret of happiness, and the way to eternal life.
Raising Jesus provides the evidence to show that it really is true. In this era of "alternative facts," Raising Jesus relies on the most balanced and up-to-date scholarship to shed trustworthy new insights into the evidence. It does this in an easy-to-follow, systematic way using engaging illustrations to reveal the logic of complex arguments. Most importantly, it deals head on with the biggest problem most people in our modern, scientific age have with the resurrection: the philosophical objection that dead people simply don't come back from the dead. Raising Jesus ultimately shows how believing Jesus rose from the dead is, in fact, the most reasonable conclusion you can make.

In the seventeenth century the ancient hope for the physical resurrection of the body and its flesh began an unexpected second life as critical theory, challenging the notion of an autonomous self and driving early modern avant-garde poetry. As an emerging empirical scientific world view and a rising Cartesian dualist ontology transformed the ancient hope for the resurrection of the flesh into the fantasy of a soul or mind living on separately from any body, literature complicated the terms of the debate. Such poets as Donne, Herbert, Vaughan, and Jonson picked up the discarded idea of the resurrection of the flesh and bent it from an apocalyptic future into the here and now to imagine the self already infused with the strange, vibrant materiality of the resurrection body. Fate of the Flesh explores what happens when seventeenth-century poets posit a resurrection body within the historical person. These poets see the resurrection body as the precondition for the social person’s identities and forms of agency and yet as deeply other to all such identities and agencies, an alien within the self that both enables and undercuts life as a social person. This perspective leads seventeenth-century poets to a compelling awareness of the unsettling materiality within the heart of the self and allows them to re-imagine agency, selfhood, and the natural world in its light. By developing a poetics that seeks a deranging materiality within the self, these poets anticipate twentieth-century “avant-garde” poetics. They frame their poems neither as simple representation nor as beautiful objects but as a form of social praxis that creates new communities of readers and writers assembled around a new experience of self-as-body mediated by poetry.
This book is about the mysteries of Jesus' birth, death, resurrection, and ascensions. How did the church get it so wrong as to the "when" and "where" of these events? Come and see.
