A history of 'hidden' nationalism in Scottish party politics
Highlights the hidden 'nationalism' of the Scottish Unionist/Conservative Party and extends this analysis to Scottish Labour and Liberal parties
Examines the 'unionism' of the Scottish National Party (SNP) for the first time
Draws on high-circulation media resources such as the Scottish Daily Express - breaking the scholarly reliance on the less-read Herald and Scotsman
Makes use of hitherto-neglected archive material, including the Scottish Political Archive in Stirling and the Parliamentary Archives at Westminster
David Torrance reassesses the relationship between 'nationalism' and 'unionism' in Scottish politics, challenging a binary reading of the two ideologies with the concept of 'nationalist unionism'. Scottish nationalism did not begin with the SNP in 1934, nor was it confined to political parties that desired independent statehood. Rather, it was more dispersed, with the Liberal, Conservative and Labour parties all attempting to harness Scottish national identity and nationalism between 1884 and 2014, often with the paradoxical goal of strengthening rather than ending the Union. The book combines nationalist theory with empirical historical and archival research to argue that these conceptions of Scottish nationhood had much more in common with each other than is commonly accepted.
Описание: The Syrian Social Nationalist Party (SSNP) is one of the most enigmatic and active political forces in the Middle East. For observers in the West, the SSNP is regarded as a far-right organization, subservient to the Baathist government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which dictates its activities from Damascus. However, the SSNP’s complicated history and its ideology of Pan-Syrianism has meant the party has been overlooked and forgotten by the daily output of news, analysis, studies and policy recommendations. Very little academic scholarship has been dedicated to understanding its origins, identity, and influence.
Addressing the need for scholarship on the SSNP, this book is a political history from the party’s foundation in 1932 to today. A comprehensive and objective study on the little known nationalist group, the author uses interviews from current members to gain insights into its everyday activities, goals, social interstices and nuances. Given the SSNP’s history of violence, their own persecution, influence on other secular parties in the region, and their impact in Syria and Lebanon’s politics, the book’s analysis sheds light on the party’s status in Lebanon and its potential role in a future post-war Syria. The SSNP is gaining popularity among regime supporters in Syria and will be one part of understanding the political developments on the ground. This book is essential reading for those wanting to understand the SSNP, its motives, and prospects.

Описание: This book highlights the plight of women in countries of the Fertile Crescent and focuses on the process of women's empowerment, which requires a change in the mind-set of the people and seeks to redress gender discrimination; to challenge patriarchy and traditional power relations; and to enable women to develop their skills and abilities in order to have control of their lives. The author argues that women's empowerment can be supported by the growing influence of grassroots and other nongovernmental organizations, which seek to enable women to participate in various spheres of social life through increased involvement in societal institutions. It can be also supported by the spread of political parties and national movements, which attract women and allow them to occupy decision-making positions, to participate in public life, and to contribute to the struggle for participatory democratic forms of social life. The Syrian Social Nationalist Party, founded by Antun Sa'adeh in 1932, provided real opportunity for empowering Syrian women. This work sheds light on the history of the Syrian Social Nationalist movement and its early female recruits.
The Syrian Social Nationalist Party devoted itself to reviving and unifying the Syrian nation and establishing this nation’s complete independence over its historical homeland, Greater Syria. It continues its struggle today, influencing and shaping Lebanese and Syrian society and politics. Yet, the party remains largely unknown and misunderstood, a condition that stems from the lack of any comprehensive study of it. This book fills this gap.
Syrian nationalism and nationalist movements, generally speaking, have been largely neglected and ignored by historians, scholars, and observers of the Middle East. So, too, has the SSNP. The lack of detailed and nuanced analyses has left significant gaps in the party’s rich history unaddressed and enabled the perpetuation of inaccuracies and misperceptions regarding its past. Given this and the party’s ongoing relevance in Lebanon and Syria, a thorough examination of the early history of the SSNP, the political organization and movement that embodied Syrian nationalism’s most explicit, most cogent expression is even more necessary.
Based on an extensive and thorough examination of Arabic, French, and English primary sources, the monograph is the first comprehensive, systematic history of the SSNP to date, detailing its struggle to fulfill its nationalist vision and establish a secular, independent state in Greater Syria through a thorough analysis of its formation, evolution, and political activities in Lebanon and Syria.

Описание: This is a major new history of the experiences and activities of Irish nationalist women in the early twentieth century. Using memoirs, reminiscences, letters and diaries, Senia Paseta reveals how Irish women formed nationalist, cultural and feminist groups of their own as well as how they influenced broader political developments.
A loyal servant of the Ottoman Empire in his early career, Sati' al-Husri (1880-1968) became one of Arab nationalism's most articulate and influential spokesmen. His shift from Ottomanism, based on religion and the multi-national empire, to Arabism, defined by secular loyalties and the concept of an Arab nation, is the theme of William Cleveland's account of "the making of an Arab nationalist."

Описание: IN THIS SHORT WORK, Professor Wood has taken on an important and often distorted question-the role of slavery in bringing on the great bloodletting of 1861-1865. The old propaganda charge that the war was "caused by" slavery now dominates "expert" opinion with almost totalitarian rigour. But in his exhaustive research into this question-to be published as a three-volume BEYOND SLAVERY-Dr. Wood will make a courageous refutation of that interpretation. He will show how the war became inevitable only because Northern society was infected by the revolutionary romantic nationalism that rocked Europe in the mid- 19th century. The South remained loyal to the old American dispensation of classical republicanism, and thus had to be eliminated. It was not the South's defense of slavery but the dominant North's determination to redefine America that made conflict "irrepressible."Wood reveals to us, chapter and verse, the real Founding Fathers and how they were distorted and falsified in the 19th century. Shotwell Publishing is proud to make available this anticipatory preview to the coming masterwork, BEYOND SLAVERY. * * * Note: This book is enrolled in Amazon's Matchbook program.
