Описание:

Geraldine Chaplin is the most distinguished actor among Charlie Chaplin’s children. Through her collaborations with major international film directors, she has created a striking performative presence across international cinema. Her acting also evokes, with varying levels of self-consciousness and in shifting cinematic contexts, the memory of her father’s screen performances. This book analyses the distinctive screen art of Geraldine Chaplin and uncover parallels between her performances and her father’s work on film. Through this method, this star study explores the rich and surprising relationships between art cinema and silent film comedy, and between modernist and classical cinematic performance. It offers a long overdue appreciation of Geraldine Chaplin’s own remarkable screen achievements, all the while shedding new insight into the art of Charlie Chaplin through the singular prism of his daughter’s bold work.

Charlie Chaplin, Director

Описание: Charlie Chaplin was one of the cinema’s consummate comic performers, yet he has long been criticised as a lacklustre film director. In this groundbreaking work—the first to analyse Chaplin’s directorial style—Donna Kornhaber radically recasts his status as a filmmaker. Spanning Chaplin’s career, Kornhaber discovers a sophisticated ""Chaplinesque"" visual style that draws from early cinema and slapstick and stands markedly apart from later, ""classical"" stylistic conventions. His is a manner of filmmaking that values space over time and simultaneity over sequence, crafting narrative and meaning through careful arrangement within the frame rather than cuts between frames. Opening up aesthetic possibilities beyond the typical boundaries of the classical Hollywood film, Chaplin’s filmmaking would profoundly influence directors from Fellini to Truffaut. To view Chaplin seriously as a director is to re-understand him as an artist and to reconsider the nature and breadth of his legacy.

Описание:

This work presents some thoughts on Play, Illusion, Reality, and Trauma in relation to the process between patient and analyst. A creative part of our journey in this discussion includes a look at the long career of Charlie Chaplin, in terms of his relationship with his audience as a metaphor for the analyst as audience to his patient and vice versa. Patient and analyst, audience and artist, are mutually and hopefully salubriously intertwined as "involved witnesses" with each other's communication, be they verbal or non-verbal. The level at which these communications are reacted to, the attributions made about them, the connectiveness created, and the therapeutic value derived in the case of analysis, depends on many idiosyncratic factors, both external and internal to the participants involved. I will provide some examples of these factors, both clinical and artistic. In the process, I will define and elaborate the clinical relevancy of play and the concept of a "Playing Alliance" vs "Working Alliance," as well as the irrelevancy of play at certain moments therapeutically. I will also discuss the idea of an aesthetic therapeutic contract and the differentiation of enactments from what I have come to term "actments," (Brok 2014, 2016), as well as the paradox of reality, illusion and the effects of trauma in human experience.

Описание:

In late 1914, Charlie Chaplin's name first began appearing on marquees. By the end of the following year, moviegoers couldn't get enough of him and his iconic persona, the Little Tramp. Perpetually outfitted with baggy pants, a limp cane, and a dusty bowler hat, the character became so beloved that Chaplin was mobbed by fans, journalists, and critics at every turn.

Although he never particularly liked giving interviews, he accepted the demands of his stardom, giving detailed responses about his methods of making movies. He quickly progressed from making two-reel shorts to feature-length masterpieces such as The Gold Rush, City Lights, and Modern Times.

Charlie Chaplin: Interviews offers a complex portrait of perhaps the world's greatest cinematic comedian and a man who is considered to be one of the most influential screen artists in movie history. The interviews he granted, performances in and of themselves, are often as well crafted as his films. Unlike the Little Tramp, Chaplin the interviewee comes across as melancholy and serious, as the titles of some early interviews---"Beneath the Mask: Witty, Wistful, Serious Is the Real Charlie" or "The Hamlet-Like Nature of Charlie Chaplin"---make abundantly clear.

His first sound feature, The Great Dictator, is a direct condemnation of Hitler. His later films such as Monsieur Verdoux and Limelight obliquely criticize American policy and consequently generated mixed reactions from critics and little response from moviegoers. During this late period of his filmmaking, Chaplin granted interviews less often. The three later interviews included here are thus extremely valuable, offering long, contemplative analyses of the man's life and work.

Описание: The comic archetype of the Little Man - a "nobody" who stands up to unfairness - is central to the films of Woody Allen and Charlie Chaplin. Drawing on psychoanalysis and gender-studies, this book explores their films as barometers of their respective cultural moments, marking the shift between modernism and postmodernism.
